Information on the "Old Order"

May 12, 2008 12:03:55 I'm looking for information about the "Old Order" mentioned in the FRCS, the details are sketchy at best, especially in regards to their philosophy.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? Any other information about any monastic order would also be beneficial, thanks.

May 12, 2008 12:06:45 Actually, I think that's about it--what's in the FRCS. However, when Old Sage comes this way, he may be able to direct you to some obscure bits of lore (he has a knack for doing that).

There's not a lot known about the Old Order. They seem to have been created for 3.x edition as a generic adaptable monastic order for the new Monk class, and were never touched since.

Waterdeep Plinth: Located in Trades Ward, this set of sacred rocks is kept as a place of worship and meditation for all faiths. Many long-dead deities hear from their worshipers only at the feet of the Plinth. For the record, the Monks of the Old Order eschew worship at the Plinth, preferring to leave their departed god alone, if in fact they ever had a god.

Robes of the Old Order: Whatever the motives of the Monks of the Old Order might be, no one doubts that they are keenly, defensively minded. Rumor has it that the masters of the order attain ranks by being able to survive a beating by an Ogre, without ever raising a hand in defense. True or not, these robes, produced by the order to fund monasteries, are the trade mark of any monk who would survive in the frontlines of combat, against an enemy clad in armor.

Unless I've overlooked a new reference, there is almost nothing in print about the Old Order, other than the FRCS, the F&P WE, and the two references BCM noted above.

May 13, 2008 9:47:54 Eric Boyd also recommended the use of the Old Order for the Twilight Monastery in his 'Age of Worms' conversion because:-

"1) The Old Order is pretty much a blank slate.
2) If anything, the Old Order is pretty much stereotypical "monk".
3) The FRCS mentions shadowdancers belonging to the order, which seems a little odd and therefore might give us a hint as to the order's focus. I thought the mention of shadowdancers seems like it might align with Xan Yae (Greyhawk God) and his emphasis on twilight.

In other words, I didn't have much to work with, so I took what little I had and made a call."

-You've got me. I have a hard enough time sometimes navigating the WotC website to find these boards, sometimes. Don't ask me to nagivate them to find old web enhancements/erratas. I was looking the other day for the Dragons of Faerûn one, and failed miserably.
