| #1dave_saunders_dupFeb 18, 2009 14:54:06 | i am thinking about suscribing to the D&D Insider program. I know there are some ok articles in it already and previews but what about Forgotten Realms? Alot of those other things arent of any interest to me because I use the FR. What FR articles are there? |
| #2iakhovasFeb 18, 2009 18:08:00 | There have only been a few FR related articles since the pay service began. One was my own article "Hall of the Frostmaiden", detailing Auril's planar realm. But frankly if you're *only* looking for Realmslore I suspect you'll be disappointed by the lack of content (at least until it picks up again around May) |
| #3PromitheasFeb 18, 2009 18:26:11 | I believe the hall of frostmaiden, the backdrop: cormyr and the fr adventure icy spire are all free to download dave. Until May the only fr article seems to be a guide to convert warforged to faerun. ![]() |
| #4rinonalyrna_fathomlinFeb 18, 2009 18:48:25 | I believe the hall of frostmaiden, the backdrop: cormyr and the fr adventure icy spire are all free to download dave. Yes, I recall the same thing. |
| #5AegeriFeb 18, 2009 18:56:56 | I believe the hall of frostmaiden, the backdrop: cormyr and the fr adventure icy spire are all free to download dave. Which was pretty bad, because I care absolutely nothing for Warforged. The other articles have been extremely good. Dhampyr, Shadar-Kai and others have been more than useful. Epic Faerun is an excellent article as well (one of the better Dragon articles IMO). Actually, I've found more use out of non-FR articles than I have the specific FR articles. Only Epic Faerun and Backdrop: Cormyr have really been any good. |
| #6IluvrienFeb 18, 2009 19:21:35 | I can only speak from my own personal experience. That said I would suggest, for now, to hold onto your money until May. See what the editorial calendar says, or even wait longer and see what some people here think about the articles once they are published and then decide if it is worth your money. |
| #7niirfaFeb 18, 2009 20:28:38 | There isn't much, but what there is I really like. I also like the non-FR specific articles, so in terms of quality use for games D&D Insider is a blast. However, for those who are looking for 3e or 3.5 levels of support for FR, they'll be, as Brian R. James said, disappointed. There just isn't enough room in the magazine for that kind of detail and breadth of lore, which makes it a shame that WotC isn't planning to release more sourcebooks for FR. Overall, I wish there was more. But the sheer amount of use I'm otherweise getting out of D&D Insider makes this a minor complaint. |
| #8merrikcaleFeb 18, 2009 21:58:57 | no |
| #9lord_karsusFeb 20, 2009 23:16:33 | -If you're looking for Forgotten Realms articles, then it isn't as of yet. In the future, maybe. |
| #10Mr_MiscellanyFeb 21, 2009 0:01:17 | So far I like it. The 4E rules resources are very useful. Love the artwork. Like others before me I'm eager/wanting to see more FR content. But I know that will wind its way to us eventually. |
| #11JudgeDookieFeb 21, 2009 13:05:14 | DDI should be subscription based per setting. Otherwise, it's like buying a hot dog with "The Works" when all you want is the dog and the bun. Sure, throw in some core if you want, but don't subject readers to settings they have no interest in. |
| #12lord_karsusFeb 21, 2009 13:07:58 | DDI should be subscription based per setting. Otherwise, it's like buying a hot dog with "The Works" when all you want is the dog and the bun. -An interesting analogy. -I know, when I got the print version of DRAGON for the year or so subscription I had to it, I thought of any Forgotten Realms articles as little bonuses. That's a different situation, though, because, "back then", the magazine wasn't pretty much the only source of continued information, along with novels, because sourcebooks were still steadily being pumped out. |
| #13JudgeDookieFeb 21, 2009 13:19:26 | Exactly. I think the "little bonuses" these days should be a single item of another setting. Sort of, like, "Think the Sage of Shadowdale is a nut? Check out this CENSORED whack in Ebberon." It gives the setting exposure without stuffing it down the subscribers throat. Besides, Wizards would more than likely make more money that way. |
| #14markustay63Feb 21, 2009 17:02:35 | The first FR article on the DDi in months is about Warforged... ![]() I don't think I can type.. anymore... tears blinding me... fell.. off chair... ![]() Yeah... pay for it... they need the money... trust me. :P |
| #15JudgeDookieFeb 21, 2009 17:46:48 | MT, I thought you were the chimp that got shot earlier in the week, but I was evidently wrong. Taco? :D |
| #16merrikcaleFeb 21, 2009 23:14:33 | The first FR article on the DDi in months is about Warforged... more proof there are no Realms at least in the eyes of WoTC |
| #17markustay63Feb 21, 2009 23:23:46 | Yup - they can deny all they want, but that right there is the proverbial 'Hand in the cookie jar'. 'Clueless' doesn't even begin to describe it.... ![]() |
| #18markustay63Feb 21, 2009 23:24:40 | MT, I thought you were the chimp that got shot earlier in the week, but I was evidently wrong. No, but I did try to get some of that meat. I haven't had fresh monkey in years. ![]() ;) :P |
| #19AegeriFeb 21, 2009 23:27:35 | The first FR article on the DDi in months is about Warforged... Actually, it was about using Warforged in Faerun and the converse of inserting Genasi into Eberron. It was still crap though. |
| #20markustay63Feb 21, 2009 23:30:12 | But Genasi weren't really Toril-specific - they were a Planescape race usable anywhere, that just happened to be included in the 3e FR books. Warforged, on the other hand, are practically the definition of Eberron. I'd be surprised if no-one used Genasi in Eb before. ![]() |
| #21AegeriFeb 21, 2009 23:40:18 | Yeah I know. It seemed entirely daft to me. Minding, DDI has more than made up for it to me with many other useful articles (Shadar-Kai are very awesome and Dhampyr already have a place in one of my games). |
| #22rinonalyrna_fathomlinFeb 21, 2009 23:52:35 | But Genasi weren't really Toril-specific - they were a Planescape race usable anywhere, that just happened to be included in the 3e FR books. Seconded. ![]() |
| #23lord_karsusFeb 22, 2009 9:05:06 | I'd be surprised if no-one used Genasi in Eb before. -It's a crazy thought, apparently. |
| #24AegeriFeb 23, 2009 0:50:34 | There is a new FR article and for once it isn't completely sucky! Albeit, it is in returned Abeir and has an extremely "Waterdeep" type vibe to it. The article is pretty nice though and I was surprised it wasn't actually an article on waterdeep (but it does give off a bit of a waterdeep vibe). Hopefully this sort of quality of article will continue. |
| #25uzzyFeb 23, 2009 1:47:10 | Of course it doesn't suck. It was written by Ed Greenwood. Now, if only it were for a city that actually existed in the Realms. Plenty of applicable cities out there, you know! Suzail post War of the Devil Dragon, Darromar, Westgate, Athkatla, Beregost. I'd have liked to known more about those cities, and I'm sure there are plenty more to add to that list. Unless those cities were covered! I did hear something about every square inch of the Realms having been covered. Hmm. |
| #26Mr_MiscellanyFeb 23, 2009 13:58:15 | Now, if only it were for a city that actually existed in the Realms. That city (Gontal, IIRC) does exist in the Realms. :P I suppose you meant to say "mainland Faerûn" or something similar. Nice to see they gave at least some attention to teh new stuff added to the Realms. |
| #27AegeriFeb 24, 2009 6:42:43 | Of course it doesn't suck. It was written by Ed Greenwood. Some of it is pretty solid but some of the things he has written have been plain awful (Spellfire immediately comes to mind). Assessed on its own merits though this is a very good article and I really hope this continues in future. More of this and less "warforged in Faerun" and other nonsense would be fantastic. Now, if only it were for a city that actually existed in the Realms. It does. |
| #28IluvrienFeb 24, 2009 6:51:35 | It does. Indeed. I, however, would have liked to see it focus instead on one of the places on the mainland that were left out or marginalised in the campaign books. The lack of Evereska in the Players Guide bugs me, for one. |
| #29AegeriFeb 24, 2009 7:17:23 | Indeed. I, however, would have liked to see it focus instead on one of the places on the mainland that were left out or marginalised in the campaign books. The lack of Evereska in the Players Guide bugs me, for one. I absolutely agree. I'm curious to see how on earth Baldurs Gate is supposed to function with the millions of refugees and similar. There seems to be something sinister hinted at the "Baldurs Gate miracle". Then again, that's just the way I'm building it for one of my future campaigns. A map of the city would have been lovely though. |
| #30kerym_ammathFeb 24, 2009 7:45:53 | I absolutely agree. Soylent Green is people! |
| #31IluvrienFeb 24, 2009 8:14:06 | Soylent Green is people! I swear you people are camping out in my head now. I was going to post this reply, but I thought nobody would get the reference. Oh how wrong I was. ;) |
| #32kerym_ammathFeb 24, 2009 9:30:24 | Charlton Heston is the source of a goodly amount of awesome movie quotes, and cheesy 60's and 70's sci-fi. Omega Man is another masterpiece of cheese. Anyway there are plenty of us old bastards running around who had this stuff force fed to us on weekends. |
| #33lord_karsusFeb 24, 2009 10:14:27 | Indeed. I, however, would have liked to see it focus instead on one of the places on the mainland that were left out or marginalised in the campaign books. The lack of Evereska in the Players Guide bugs me, for one. -Evereska is a place that, after everything is said and done, needs some coverage, based on everything that has changed within it, from 1,372 DR to 1,479 DR! And, yet... |
| #34BluenoseFeb 24, 2009 10:23:43 | I absolutely agree. Millions isn't specified, just that it's larger than Waterdeep and I think it's the largest city in the Realms. If it's around 500,000 that's perfectly workable, with the Chionthar river and it's valley for growing and tranpsorting food. There were 14th/15th century cities with comparable populations and roughly equivalent transport capabilities. |
| #35rinonalyrna_fathomlinFeb 25, 2009 19:51:08 | I swear you people are camping out in my head now. I was going to post this reply, but I thought nobody would get the reference. Oh how wrong I was. ;) What about "It's a COOKBOOK!"?:D |
| #36markustay63Feb 25, 2009 22:49:40 | But Mr. Heston (my all-time favorite actor) never said that. He did say "The bas****s! They did it! They finally did it!" while looking at the arm of the Statue of Liberty sticking up out of a beach. I saw that at a drive-in double-feature. Ahhh... the wonders you kids have missed... But in keeping with the vein, and Rinon's path of thought - "but there was.. time now." @Lk - to tell you the truth, every time I hear the name of that place, I think it's a soft-drink. (maybe because it rhymes with 'Fresca') |
| #37JudgeDookieFeb 25, 2009 23:14:05 | What about "It's a COOKBOOK!"?:D Holy !! Did you just get excited?!! Are you pregnant?!! ![]() |
| #38lord_karsusFeb 25, 2009 23:33:56 | @Lk - to tell you the truth, every time I hear the name of that place, I think it's a soft-drink. (maybe because it rhymes with 'Fresca') -I didn't do it. -'Evermeet' flows much better than 'Evereska', though, I agree. And, there's another pun for you. |
| #39AegeriFeb 25, 2009 23:36:03 | What about "It's a COOKBOOK!"?:D It's a cookbook!! |
