| #1jageJan 12, 2009 14:20:17 | In my next session a ship will appear on the horizon- I need to know if Faerun if flat or a globe to have it appear correctly. Thanks! |
| #2msatranJan 12, 2009 14:22:26 | Faerun is round. This is an editionless (Thankfully) answer. |
| #3TheriseJan 12, 2009 15:04:47 | Faerun is round. This is an editionless (Thankfully) answer. ((pssst! it's a sphere... ;) :P :D )) |
| #4markustay63Jan 12, 2009 15:41:02 | No.![]() Disclaimer: That was not created by me - that was done by a VERY talented Realms Cartogrpher by the name of Patrakis, over at Candlekeep. |
| #5jageJan 12, 2009 15:55:13 | ((pssst! it's a sphere... ;) :P :D )) Dictionary: round (round) adj., round·er, round·est. a. Being such that every part of the surface or the circumference is equidistant from the center: a round ball. [snip] n. a. Something, such as a circle, disk, globe, or ring, that is round. [snip] :D :D :D Ok- so, does going off the edge of the map still lead to different worlds (as one of my players claims)? How does that work? Sorry I'm new to running the universe! Thanks! |
| #6markustay63Jan 12, 2009 16:20:11 | No, your player is F-ing with you. In order to sail to another world, one needs to sail into the Shadowfel, and to do that you need to either have some sort of spell, find a portal on the open sea, or be in a ship that can do that (like one of those Demon-ones - can't remember the source ATM). Then if you manage that, you have to sail deep into the mists of the Shadowfell and try to find some other world... and a way out... before something dark and shadowy eats you (or you wind-up in Ravenloft, and wish something dark and shadowy ate you). Tell your player he is NOT Jack Sparrow, and FR is not PotC III. ![]() |
| #7jageJan 12, 2009 16:28:51 | Tell your player he is NOT Jack Sparrow, and FR is not PotC III. I would but they just set the rum cache they found on fire, and the owner will be coming directly to find out what happened to his thousands of bottles and other booty which is only just now cooling under a pool of molten glass. :D But yes I started them on the edge of the map, and one of the first comments was about sailing to the oriental adventures or something like that. Love the maps by the way, mind if I use (butcher) the bare Moonshaes as generic islands in my campaign? What do you use to make them? |
| #8TheriseJan 12, 2009 17:18:24 | Dictionary: round (round) Silly goose! Round denotes more the two-dimensional view (rounded edges, or a disk... like Shar's holy symbol! See, Shar's everywhere!). I hereby raise you a third dimension, since we're talking about an astrological body! Muahaha! Sphere Ok- so, does going off the edge of the map still lead to different worlds (as one of my players claims)? How does that work? Sorry I'm new to running the universe! Thanks! In the Forgotten Realms, sailing "off the map" never did lead to different worlds. It just led to more open ocean, or sea monsters ,or pirates , or whatever land mass the DM decided to add in. Or perhaps Maztica, depending on your direction. But if you sailed into a giant ship-tall portal, then maybe it'd lead to another world. ;) ![]() But yes I started them on the edge of the map, and one of the first comments was about sailing to the oriental adventures or something like that. Well, there's Maztica, but that's just another continent (and more meso-american than oriental). For oriental flavor, you'd want Kara-Tur. Although... in 4E Realms neither Kara-Tur nor Maztica are there any longer, they actually went BOOM or were translocated during the Spellplague. |
| #9markustay63Jan 12, 2009 17:26:40 | The blank ones - most of them anyway - I just Photshop-out all the text, locales, and roads from the official Map which is a free download. The others are combination of Photoshop manipulation and my own work - I almost always start off with a canon map, though, before I start changing it up (except in the east, of course, where none exist - thats mostly me with a lot of copy and pasting going on). I'm doing a newer version of my 'Mysterious Island' map, but that probably won't be ready until the end oif the month (its for a contest). Thats generic and made to fit into anyone's campaign word. Also, if you like massive archipeligos (strings of islands), might I suggest my Punjabbi Islands Map that came in the Candlekeep Compendium IX? ![]() Just change the name - I'm embarrassed by it now. Also, it used to be between Maztica and Katashaka - god knows where it is now. |
| #10rinonalyrna_fathomlinJan 13, 2009 12:53:18 | Toril is definitely an orb, and has been called such in the sources. It functions much as Earth does. |
| #11lord_karsusJan 13, 2009 13:04:53 | -Information on the entire solar system can be found in the sourcebook entitled Realmspace. |
