| #1rian_kingOct 19, 2009 22:26:53 | Like the title says is there a novel that tells about FR transition from 3ed to 4th. I have read a lot in the FR compedium and was wondering if there was a novel |
| #2sfdragonOct 19, 2009 22:53:29 | there are various novels that take place during the tranisition phase. however there is no single novel |
| #3The_SilverswordOct 20, 2009 3:23:41 | The Ghost King seems to be one to pick up. Apparently alot is revealed in that one. |
| #4sfdragonOct 20, 2009 3:38:52 | The Transitional trilogy, the thay one, the shadow war... I thinkand the empearl whatchmocallit oddessy , and Bruce's current series.
these would be the ones that have the only tidbits on the between time.
I do miss the roll of years |
| #5ErrabalOct 20, 2009 9:12:08 | There doesn't appear to be one specifically, like the Avatar series for 2nd to 3rd, just a bunch of snipets. The Thay one (Haunted Lands) series has been my favorite so far. |
| #6StiggerOct 20, 2009 10:10:12 | I thought they specifically said there wasn't going to be one myself... |
| #7ZireaelOct 20, 2009 10:47:44 | The book three of Empyrean Odyssey is good and explains the transition. |
| #8sfdragonOct 20, 2009 13:56:27 |
they did, and there isnt. the ones named are just tid bids, none explain |
| #9Keith53Oct 21, 2009 17:14:16 | As stated, there is no single novel that gives a unified perspective of the transition. However, various authors have put single person point of view of their experience going through the Spellplague, etc., so if you read all of them, you might have a fair idea of some of the diversity of what happened. Bruce Cordell's series dealing with the Abolethic Sovereignty, the first book introduces characters whose lives were changed, families wiped out, traveled into a plagueland, etc. I think Bruce shows the strangeness (from the land to being spellscarred) the best. The Thay undead series shows Szass Tam's reaction to the moment (death of Mystra) and the relearning of magic and the reshaping of terrain. This shows the politic impact the best. The Empyrean Odyssy (by Thomas Reid) tells a story from the perspective of the immortal servants of the gods, and does a nice job of depiciting emotions of when your god dies, and the planes go bonkers. Shows the planar impact the best. Bob Salvatore personalized the event (in the Ghost King) with focus on change (dire straits) to Catti Brie and Regis, the Crystral Shard, and moving Shadowfell closer, but only vague references to the troubled wizards, etc. in the rest of the world, and zero references to other changed geography. The series titled Ed Greenwood presents Waterdeep have some current timeline perspectives (90 years after the Spellplague), with some looking back at impact, but not a lot. Mistshore deals well with being spellscarred. Keith |

Of course there isn't going to be just one book. Less money that way. ![]() |
| #11sfdragonOct 21, 2009 17:35:12 |
true Chris P did say they were not going to do one, he didnt say many, but I think he may of intended none at all |
| #12LordManshoonOct 21, 2009 17:42:40 |
Based on what he said in the interview, where he seemed sore (no disrespect to him) because authors were filling in gaps when they needed to, I'm inclined to agree with you. He seems to have been hoping that the transition would go without much attention. Yet he also said several times before the interview that authors would be able to incorporate the past century in their novels when they deemed it appropriate. He changed his mind pretty quickly. Maybe the wonderful scent of currency will change his mind back. ![]() |
| #13sfdragonOct 21, 2009 18:08:16 | maybe, maybe not |
| #14nightseerOct 22, 2009 8:58:47 | OP Shar wins! Nuff said. |
| #15darth_k-travaOct 22, 2009 15:37:02 | Or so she thinks anyways. |
| #16sfdragonOct 22, 2009 21:49:08 | Amuanator's Light will burn through the Darkness!!!
and through his light the True Netheril will return, and not the trashy state that it is now. -The Teraseer |
| #17The_SilverswordOct 22, 2009 21:56:46 | Nethril was always a bad apple. They need to be gone for good. You dont even want to know what they did to the Halfling dancers |
| #18LordManshoonOct 22, 2009 21:59:24 |
Well, it is your destiny to eliminate Netheril once and for all. We are merely the supporting cast in your noble quest. |
| #19sfdragonOct 22, 2009 22:02:42 |
actually they had gnome dancers. I have a new recruit for your cause |
| #20The_SilverswordOct 22, 2009 22:02:44 |
now wait a minute, I thought i just had to kill one shade? how did it go from killing one shade to wiping out the entire empire!!!???? I did kill a shade by the way, unfortunately his body disappeared after he was slain, so i have no actual proof of the deed, only my good word! |
| #21LordManshoonOct 22, 2009 22:06:08 |
Well, you know how these things go. One thing leads to another, and before you know it, you're the Chosen One, destined to do something that you wouldn't feel up to normally, but do anyway cause you can't fight fate. Oh, and as for your good word.......... I'm gonna need to see Shade fall out of the sky. Says so right here in the rulebook. |
| #22The_SilverswordOct 22, 2009 22:27:19 | damn rulebook! ok so screw the shade thing, I think my real task is to get that rulebook! |
| #23JudgeDookieOct 22, 2009 23:28:44 |
Not going to happen. |
| #24StiggerOct 23, 2009 14:06:34 | There's only one rule. The penalty for not following the rule is death. The best part of the rule is that its a secret... |
| #25The_SilverswordOct 23, 2009 17:01:57 |
oh well thats just great! Well i guess im heading off to the empire of shade then with sfdragons smilies and some of Manshoons lackeys. Wish me luck! If you never hear from me again youll know why! |
| #26StiggerOct 23, 2009 17:32:18 | Indeed... largely because you undertook a pointless quest to gain a proven megalomaniac's acceptance and approval. But hey, its your funeral... |
| #2718DELTAOct 23, 2009 22:05:25 | Sucks to be him... |
| #28The_SilverswordOct 23, 2009 22:07:28 | wow thanx for the boost of confidence there guys! |
| #2918DELTAOct 23, 2009 22:09:34 | Glad I could be of service... |
| #30LordManshoonOct 24, 2009 10:55:04 | great! Well i guess im heading off to the empire of shade then with sfdragons smilies and some of Manshoons lackeys. Wish me luck! If you never hear from me again youll know why! Oh don't worry. You'll be fine. The forces of Cormyr are moving against Shade, and the Five Companies of Halruua have united and are about to engage Sakkors. You'll be able to sneak in and strike at the jugular.
The truth comes out. |
| #31StiggerOct 24, 2009 16:12:08 | Were it up to me, I'd nuke the crap out of Shar and her little Shadow Tater-Tots known as the Shades and Netheril et al... |
| #32The_SilverswordOct 24, 2009 18:00:02 | Now that is an excellent idea! Any one know where i can get a nuke? I know in previous editions technology didnt work right in the Realms, but with the weave gone who knows? A nuke might indeed work!
|
| #33sfdragonOct 24, 2009 20:22:16 | The Gondmens Gnomes of Lantan had a few test models, but they ran heavily on the Weave. the weave is gone, the items are on the bottom of the sea. the original designer was nailed with the tri curse of mystra for creating this....... it damaged the weave. |
| #3418DELTAOct 24, 2009 23:42:58 | Who is going to start the Shar vs Nukes thread? |
| #35sfdragonOct 25, 2009 3:19:07 | not me, its a loss. get nightsinger to do it |
| #36The_SilverswordOct 25, 2009 5:32:42 |
Ok great so i all have to do is make it to suken Lantan. So all i need is a submarine. D'oh! Im betting they were all on Lantan when it sunk. This just gets better and better. |
| #3718DELTAOct 25, 2009 5:53:19 | Just use your yellow submarine. |
| #38The_SilverswordOct 25, 2009 5:58:55 | it got REPOd |
| #39The_SilverswordOct 25, 2009 7:49:46 | I just took the what class are you test and heres what i got:
Interesting. Not what I was expecting. So I guess i could build my own Submarine, or for that matter my own Nuke! Look out Netheril Here I come!
|
| #4018DELTAOct 25, 2009 7:59:55 | Now thats the spirit.
I dont think this will end well for SilverSword, The Shades and Shar are wearing 'WotC Plot Armor +39'... |
| #41The_SilverswordOct 25, 2009 8:07:35 |
Now dont go bringing Shar into this. I thought all i had to do was take down an entire floating city of Shades? |
| #4218DELTAOct 25, 2009 8:09:19 | You mess with them, then you mess with her. She will show you loss and bitterness as Nightseer would say. |
| #43The_SilverswordOct 25, 2009 8:44:52 | I do like Shar, Well its not that i like her but i think she makes an excellent baddie. I really like the Shades too. Theyre the best kind of villans, they dont consider themselves evil. The way they see it their plots for world domination are for the betterment of Toril, if only everyone else could see that and just bow down to them already. I think its interesting though they want to rule the world not destroy it. Shars really allied with entrophy, she just wants it all to end, so really the Shades and Shar are after to completly differnt things. Those poor deluded Shades really have no clue. Theyre going down! |
| #44LordManshoonOct 25, 2009 9:54:18 |
But if one were to eliminate the source of all evil (Chris Perkins ), the enchantment on that armor becomes severely weakened. *begins setting plan into motion* |
| #45The_SilverswordOct 25, 2009 10:23:34 |
Ok now were talkin! That sounds a little more plausible of a quest there. Although im guessing that plotting the demise of a WotC employee might get us banned from the boards. |
| #46LordManshoonOct 25, 2009 10:30:00 |
Only if they can't take a joke. Which they can't. So, yeah, I'll leave my vague intentions out in the open. CP escapes again. *snaps fingers* |
| #47sfdragonOct 25, 2009 14:37:08 |
I even give you one |
| #48The_SilverswordOct 25, 2009 14:47:00 | Sweeeet! Is that by any chance a Spelljamming Submarine? |
| #49sfdragonOct 25, 2009 22:12:14 | it can be anything you want |
| #5018DELTAOct 25, 2009 22:21:52 | You guys can plot via pm... |
| #51The_SilverswordOct 25, 2009 23:13:07 |
I have a feeling those are still monitored. |
| #52nightseerOct 26, 2009 0:37:45 |
Shar knows... |
| #5318DELTAOct 26, 2009 3:18:44 | Knows what? |
| #54The_SilverswordOct 26, 2009 3:25:07 | Thats what i want to know! |
| #55Doombringer_of_HoarOct 26, 2009 4:15:25 |
I do not like what they have done with Hoar in 4th edition. Count me in as well. Hoar will be avenged! |
| #5618DELTAOct 26, 2009 5:10:21 | Sounds like you guys got quite the Chris Perkins MUST be stopped(TM) group going. So who gets to be the Grand Poo-baa? Not Manshoony shoon, he has a big enough ego as it is. |
| #57The_SilverswordOct 26, 2009 7:56:57 | Doombringer can be the Fallguy er i mean Leader. |
| #58LordManshoonOct 26, 2009 9:07:10 | Sounds like you guys got quite the Chris Perkins MUST be stopped(TM) group going. I know. It's almost as annoying as your old Chosen of Cyric shtick. *insert innocent smilie here* Not Manshoony shoon, he has a big enough ego as it is. Hey, when you're the most powerful mage on Toril (barring a cheesy annihilation-of-all creation ritual which, though backfiring, gave a certain someone the powers of a near-god), you tend to get full of yourself from time to time. In the past, watching my Keystone Cops get knocked around by Elminster usually brought me back down to earth. Now that he has one foot in the grave, I'm unchallenged, so of course I'll get carried away from time to time. |

Its sounds suspiciously like Karsus's Avatar to me. |
| #60LordManshoonOct 26, 2009 13:35:58 |
Did you read the Haunted Lands trilogy? While the ritual is Netherese in origin, it wasn't developed by Karsus, but some other arcanist, whose name escapes me. Maybe it's somehow related to KA, but that's just me spitballin'. Then again, this ritual really went beyond KA (with all do respect to milord). Even if it backfires, the last caster controlling the ritual has a chance of becoming super-powerful. It's so cheesy, and should never have been used. RLB is a great author, so I think he was probably handed this ritual and told to use it or he'd be fed to the Aboleths. |

Guess I'll have to check that one out, especialy since I'm going to be using Thay and Szass Tam in my campaign. It does sound pretty cheezy, especialy if it goes beyond Karsus's Avatar, being as that was supposed to be the most powerful spell/ritual ever created. Szass is evil and powerful enough with out them having to give him an all powerful ritual. |
| #6218DELTAOct 27, 2009 0:15:13 | I enjoyed those Novels. Then again I like most 4E FR Novels. I haven't read them all yet, bit I have them. I might gripe and complain but ultimately the Realms are the Realms reguardless the Edition. |
| #63darth_k-travaOct 27, 2009 17:50:07 |
I've only read a few of the 4e Realms novels myself. Downshadow was excellent as well as Plague of Spells. Haven't read the second book (which just came out a few weeks ago) yet. |
| #64LordManshoonOct 27, 2009 19:33:13 | I actually like the majority of the novels as well. And all things considered, I thought the Haunted Lands trilogy was a C+/B- (but this is based on how I rank FR books, not how I would evaluate real literature [with all due respect to the authors, I don't view FR novels the same way I do the works of, say, Joyce or Yoshikawa]). It's just that damn super-epic ritual that allows one random mage on one random planet in one random corner of the cosmos to undo all creation in Realmspace. I don't know for sure if RLB had his hands tied, but it sure seems that way to me. |
