| #1lord_karsusJan 22, 2009 14:20:09 | -Instead of using Denin Do'Urden as the featured Drow NPC in Elves of Faerûn, I decided, why not, to use Jarlaxle instead. He's certainly more interesting. We all know about his "bland" stats in the 2e and 3e books (Fighter 17 and 18, respectively), but with all of the 3e books out, delving into all Classes and Prestige Classes, I want a better, more appropriate build for him. |
| #2MattDrozJan 22, 2009 15:47:23 | How's this? I based the magic items off the Villain's Lorebook entry Jarlaxle CR 19 Male Drow Rogue 2/Swashbuckler 16 Init +9; Senses Darkvision 120', Listen +11, Spot +11 AC 26, touch 18, flat-footed 20 (+8 armor, +3 deflection, +5 Dex) hp 132 (2d6+16d10+36) Fort +16, Ref +19, Will +13 Defensive abilities evasion, trap sense +1; Immune sleep; SR 29 Spd 30 ft Melee +1 wounding rapier +23/+18/+13/+8 (1d6+7/15-20) (1d6+3 to targets immune to critical hits/sneak attacks) Ranged +4 throwing dagger +26/+21/+16/+11 (1d4+10/19-20) (1d4+6 to targets immune to critical hits/sneak attacks) Special Attacks Sneak attack +1d6 Spell-like abilities: (CL 18th) 1/day - Dancing lights, darkness and faerie fire Str 14, Dex 20, Con 15, Int 18, Wis 15, Cha 16 Base Atk +17; Grapple +19 Feats: Combat Reflexes, Daylight Adaptation, Dodge, Improved Critical (rapier), Improved Initiative, Iron Will, Mobility, Weapon Finesse Skills: Balance +20, Bluff +24, Diplomacy +5, Disable Device +6, Disguise +14, Escape Artist +18, Hide +18, Intimidate +5, Jump +6, Listen +13, Move Silently +18, Open Lock +7, Search +15, Sleight of Hand +16, Spot +13, Tumble +28, Use Magic Device +12 Languages: Undercommon, Common, Elven SQ: Keen senses, Drow immunities, Drow magic, Drow weapon familiarity, Trapfinding, Evasion, Grace +2, Insightful Strike, Dodge bonus +3, Acrobatic charge, Improved flanking, Lucky, Acrobatic Skill mastery, Weakening Critical Combat Gear: Jarlaxle's Bracers, Ring of Protection +3, +1 Rapier of wounding, +4 Throwing daggers, Vest of Resistance +4, Necklace of Fireballs IV, Boots of Elvenkind, Cape of scintillating colors (as Robe of scintillating colors), Hat of holding (as Bag of Holding I), +2 Main-gauch of life-stealing, Wand of Light, Daylight pellets, Jarlaxle's eyepatch, Ring of Freedom of Movement, Scarab of protection Keen Senses: Jarlaxle receives a +2 bonus Listen, Search and Spot checks. He can make a Search check to spot a secret or concealed door if he passes within 10 feet, regardless of whether or not he is actively looking. Drow Immunities: Jarlaxle is immune to magic sleep effects and gets a +2 racial saving throw bonus on Will saves against spells and spell-like abilities. Weapon Familiarity: Jarlaxle is proficient with hand crossbows, shortswords, and rapiers. Grace: Jarlaxle gains a +2 competence bonus on Reflex saves. Insightful Strike: Jarlaxle applies his Intelligence bonus (in addition to Strength) to damage on any weapon that can be enhanced with Weapon Finesse. Targets immune to sneak attacks or critical hits are immune to this damage. Dodge bonus: Jarlaxle can focus his defenses on a single opponent, granting him a +3 dodge bonus to his AC against melee attacks from that target. This stacks with the Dodge bonus from his feat, but only when he identifies the target for the ability and the feat as the same target. Acrobatic Charge: Jarlaxle can charge in situation where others cannot. He may charge over difficult terrain and through allies blocking his path. Depending on the circumstance, he may still need to make appropriate checks (Jump or Tumble, in particular) to successfully move over the terrain. Improved Flanking: Jarlaxle gains a +4 bonus on his attacks against flanked opponents instead of the normal +2. Lucky: Once per day, Jarlaxle can reroll any failed attack roll, skill check, ability check or saving throw. He must take the result of the reroll, even if it's worse. Acrobatic Skill Mastery (Ex): Jarlaxle can take 10 on a Jump or Tumble, even under adverse conditions. Weakening Critical (Ex): When Jarlaxle deals a critical hit against an opponent, he also deals 2 points of Strength damage to them. Creatures immune to sneak attacks or critical hits are immune to this damage. Jarlaxle's Bracers: These bracers of armor +8 have been enchanted to store his +4 throwing daggers. He can pull the daggers from the bracer as a free action. Jarlaxle's eyepatch: This eyepatch works as a wand of Burning Hands and a wand of fear. |
| #3Elrik_DarkstormJan 22, 2009 17:08:07 | Wasnt his eye patch used as a blocker of mental intrusion spells/psionics ? I seem to remember something to the effect of having different powers when it was worn on different eyes or something like that. |
| #4overworkeddmJan 22, 2009 18:01:05 | Whatever you do, despite what all the sourcebooks say, do not stat Jarlaxle using a rapier and main-gauche (no offense mattdroz, I like your write up, this is just a rant). Every write up Ive ever seen has him statted with said weapons, but If you read the Salvatore novels he always uses two thin longswords. |
| #5overworkeddmJan 22, 2009 18:03:51 | Wasnt his eye patch used as a blocker of mental intrusion spells/psionics ? I seem to remember something to the effect of having different powers when it was worn on different eyes or something like that. Yes, it was an eyepatch of fiery fear, but also conveyed a mind blank effect. With respect to his items abilities, Jarlaxle is constantly swapping his items out with others that resemble them in appearance but have different abilities, so getting those correct will be difficult. |
| #6MattDrozJan 22, 2009 18:05:55 | Would they be Elven Thinblades (from Races of the Wild)? If so, I could update it. I was basing it off the Villain's Lorebook entry. Edit: I thought the same thing about the eyepatch (as well as his hat, his cloak, etc., etc.). He swaps things out consistently to get opponents to underestimate him. |
| #7phelf_der_zemitJan 22, 2009 19:40:20 | I always thought, after reading Servent of the Shard they were probably +2 returning shrinkning elven longswords. I'd give him about 5 or 6 of them. |

| #10MattDrozJan 22, 2009 20:44:48 | -Male Drow Rogue 2 / Swashbuckler 16...Any relevant Prestige Classes to fit him up with? The only ones that I saw that might fit up with him are some of the Trickster (Battle, Magical and Uncanny) prestige classes in Complete Scoundrel. But since they use the skill tricks system, it's a more complex build that buys out skill tricks for two skill points. I thought he looked better with the skills instead, since he always seemed more 'knowledgeable' to me. |
| #11lord_karsusJan 22, 2009 20:45:51 | -I'll have to look at what they even do. For expediency, though, I'm leaning towards not even bothering, and using this write up, if you don't mind. |
| #12MattDrozJan 22, 2009 20:49:49 | Skill tricks are kinda like mini-feats. For instance, Acrobatic Backstab allows you to move through a foe's space to render it flat-footed. To take the trick, you also have to have 12 ranks in Tumble to take it. Go ahead and use it! :D |
| #13phelf_der_zemitJan 22, 2009 21:03:59 | Master thrower would be fun. Or you could use the 10 level alternate. I'd throw in acouple fighter levels along with rogue and swashbuckler. That's all I got for now. Maybe I'll flesh him out a bit later. There is a specific magical dvice I wanted to detail soon too. |
| #14MattDrozJan 22, 2009 21:30:03 | It might be just me, but I'm a strong advocate that by throwing in levels of other classes just for a few extras isn't worth it. As they say, 'Jack of all trades, master of none'. Sure, you could toss in a two levels of fighter to get two extra feats, but then you would lose a dodge bonus and weakening critical. Oops... just noticed something on the builds. Time to edit (forgot Lucky, Acrobatic Skill Mastery, Weakening Critical abilities). |
| #15lord_karsusJan 22, 2009 21:36:50 | Skill tricks are kinda like mini-feats. -No, no, I meant those PrCs, not Skill Tricks. ;) |
| #16MattDrozJan 22, 2009 21:48:43 | LOL The Battle trickster is a 3-level PrC that grants an extra Trick at 1st, an extra Feat at 2nd, and Tricky Fighting at third, which grants a +1 bonus to the next attack after you perform a skill trick. Magical trickster is another 3-level PrC that mixes spellcasting and tricks. Benefits are tricks, metamagic feats and being able to mix metamagic with feats. Uncanny tricksters are actually great add-ons since it's a 3-level PrC, but last two of those levels are identical to adding another level of a previous class (it would increase spellcasting ability, rogue abilities like sneak attack, extra fighter feats, etc.) while giving bonus tricks and adding 'stunts' and bonuses to defense with skill tricks. |
| #17keverasJan 23, 2009 1:31:31 | Just for fun I'm gonna throw in my own write-up. Soon :D |
| #18keverasJan 23, 2009 4:45:48 | It's been a long time since I did some 3e stats, so I wouldn't be surprised if a few things here and there are wrong. Anyway, Jarlaxle, this time as a duelist. Sneak Attack: Any time someone Jarlaxle attacks is denied their Dexterity bonus to AC, or he is flanking them, Jarlaxle inflicts an extra 2d6 damage. Ranged attacks must be within 30 feet to gain this, and this extra damage is not increased on a critical hit. Creatures that are immune to critical hits ignore this damage, as do creatures with concealment. Trapfinding (Ex): Jarlaxle can use the Search skill to locate traps when the task has a DC higher than 20. He can use the Disable Device skill to disarm magic traps. Evasion (Ex): On a successful Reflex save against a magical attack, Jarlaxle takes no damage. Trap Sense (Ex): +1 to Reflex saves and AC against traps. Uncanny Dodge (Ex): Jarlaxle retains his Dexterity bonus to AC even if flatfooted or struck by an invisible attacker. |
| #19lord_karsusJan 23, 2009 10:33:25 | -Uh oh...Competition. |
| #20rinonalyrna_fathomlinJan 23, 2009 11:42:15 | Jarlaxle is NE, not CE. |
| #21keverasJan 23, 2009 13:00:31 | -Uh oh...Competition. No, just too much spare time ;) Jarlaxle is NE, not CE. Exactly. In canon. And in canon Jarlaxle is a Ftr18. |
| #22MattDrozJan 23, 2009 13:50:00 | -Uh oh...Competition. Competition breeds diversity. :invasion: I agree with Rino, Jarlaxle never seemed the chaotic type to me. He always had a plan, even when it didn't seem like it. Sure, he's against the establishment, but that's just because he wants to be in charge. ;) |
| #23phelf_der_zemitJan 23, 2009 19:37:42 | Um.. he seems the definition of chaotic to me.. I'd almost put him at CN before NE or CE. Sure he's not afraid to get dirty but I'd like to think near the end of his cotrilogy he got a little more sentimental. |
| #24MattDrozJan 23, 2009 20:45:52 | Jarlaxle is a villain. He is evil. A person heading a mercenary band that has no qualms about killing to earn a little more gold and will destablize an entire city (Luskan) just to create an 'outpost' for their operations IS evil. Remember, evil people can have friends and family too, they just don't put them ahead of themselves. If you can convince me that Jarlaxle would ever 'take a bullet' for Artemis, I'll believe he could be neutral instead of evil. |
| #25phelf_der_zemitJan 23, 2009 22:31:58 | Depends on the context. If he only had to take a bullit in the foot or he had a spell in effect or he thought that by saving AE he would still survive somehow... All in perspective. I agree though. He has a more evil way to him. But He is hardly neutral. He is indeed very chaotic. Maybe his isn't Chaotic Stupid, but he is atleast to my sense the most true force of chaos since the joker in the dark knight. What did he say.. oh ya "Introduce a little anarchy. Upset the established order." Seems like the motto they would put on Jarlaxes headstone (if he ever died that is). |
| #26MattDrozJan 23, 2009 22:41:53 | Athrogate is definitely chaotic. "Do I look like a guy that has a plan? I'm one of those dogs that chase cars. I wouldn't know what to do with one if I caught it!" Jarlaxle, though, always has a plan. And a purpose. ;) Now, let's get back on track before LK starts calling us on being off-topic... :D |
| #27baneofelvesJan 23, 2009 23:07:58 | ![]() keep up the awesome work! |
| #28lord_karsusJan 23, 2009 23:27:47 | -Jarlaxle is most certainly NE. As was said, he gives off the "aura" that he doesn't really always know what's going on, and that he sometimes calls things as they go, but underneath that, we all know that he is absolutely in control of the situation, and has numerous plans and alternative plans ready. |
| #29drizztsmanchildJan 23, 2009 23:51:38 | Jarlaxle creates chaos in order to profit from it. Never have I seen him actually Create Chaos simply for the fun of it. Nor have I ever seen him kill anyone truely innocent or honorable. Whether they are evil drow in the underdark or evil humans in Calimport or Luskan. He did help destroy an evil creation. He did sorta turn Entreri more towards not being evil. If I were to classify him it would be NP(Neutral pragmatic) . He was friends with Zak and in TPK seems to actually care for Drizzt. If we can give a pass for Zak killing rather than Fleeing the Underdark to stay alive I believe Jarlaxle deserves the same. |
| #30lord_karsusJan 23, 2009 23:57:22 | -That's the thing that says to me that he is Neutral, and not Chaotic: He doesn't create Chaos. He creates Controlled Chaos. He's the man with the plan, no matter what (99.9% of the time). If he was truly chaotic, he would be much more ill prepared. Not "Chaotic Stupid", as many people see Chaotic Evil, but...Less Jarlaxle! |
| #31baneofelvesJan 23, 2009 23:59:48 | @DManchild Jarlaxle is more than willing to take advantage of a person in dire need (IMO), and I do think he's evil. But he's not the rawr rawr I kill babies evil. He's the smart evil. Just because someone is evil doesn't mean they don't have friends and other people that they truly care about. |
| #32lord_karsusJan 24, 2009 0:09:26 | -Ack, I'm sorry I kinda perpetuated it. Take the discussion about his alignment to the thread in Realmslore HERE that I made specially for the occasion. |
