Do you mean acctually playing D&D or do you mean just RPing? Cause if you just mean RPing, there is already one going on here on the D&D forums in the off-topic Tavern... the link is in my sig if you are interested:D :D :D

I might. I was actually thinking to make my own thread for IC banter for LFR (no idea where, though), but I don't mind trying an actual PbP game again.

I guess this will be pre-Spellplague?

-Like I said, I don't have any specifics right now. I just wanted to see if people would be interested if I started writing up a campaign. I'd be more RP than actual D&D, since you can't do the dice rolling, and the character sheets, and all of that.

-I might have it based in, or start in, Calimshan, though.

There are online dice-rollers, and online character sheets if you so wish LK. personally I prefer having a base from which to write. Even doing freestyle, I have a power level set out, so as not to end up in god-mode as many writers tend to do.

Rollers in turn make it easier for those not used to give and take, to avoid always hitting and killing instantly. Alternatively, a longe rmethod is to write what we do, you roll on your end, let us know the result, and one of us describes the result.

As for playing in multiple threads at once, I don't find it terribly hard when the motivation is there. As of late it has been lacking, but Karsus DMing has piqued my interest.

I'm interested, but only if I can run a Monk with the Ki system. :D

He'll be from the Desert Wind school, run by Air Genasi.

Also, I know it will be pre-Spellplague (unless you surprise the crap out of me), but will it be 3e. 3.5, or 3PF?

3PF PCs are a little more powerful and balanced then 3.5, but I'm sure not everyone here is familiar with them. The other option is to start everyone at level 2 or 3, just to get rid of that low-action 1st level.

You could use an Honor System of rolling for tactical encounters but as RW said, online Rollers can be use as well. Also, Doesn't Alediran's campaign feature character stats for his online RP campaign and how does that effect his game?

Depending on the croud, I am skeptical of the honor system. With the votes so far, I think it looks fine, but for the time being, planning for something visable, at least to the DM is a better course.

Additionally, what are we looking at for alignment, and party cooperation? Is it a story, or more of a game?

Ditto what RW said - I may be a dreamer when it comes to my beliefs, but one thing I am VERY skeptical about is human nature. ;)

There's some great proggies out there for doing just this with D&D, and I'll see if I can dig up a few (some were recommended to me awhile ago, when I asked about a Paizo 'Gaming Table', and I was informed "why would Paizo want to control people's games, when that technology already exists?")

Good Point.... ;)

The lore in Faerun makes it so much more fun to create a character..

And yes, that is a yes. I'd be overjoyed to do a campaign with zealous Forgotten realms fans. The one liners become outstanding.

Another thought that crosses the idle mind of a guy sitting at a computer.. When I began at these boards about two years ago (I'm guessing) maybe more, I got the vibe from you (Lord Karsus) that you didn't really dable in the mechanices of D&D but rather stayed with the Myth&Lores of the Forgotten Realms nation. Am I wrong or have you just picked it up over the years?

Some other thoughts came to me a while ago. If you do plan on using D&D mechanics in the PbP game, some ground rules should be established.

First- What edition we're going to play (I assume 3.5)?

Second- What source material are you allowing, such as the Complete books, Tome of Battle, Expanded Psionics Handbook, PHB 2, etc?

Third- Character creation such as using the point buy for stats (if so, i'd suggest 30 or 32 pts.) or an Ability array (usually 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 10) and FR specific things such as Bonus Regional Feats and Regional starting information (that part in the Player's Guide that allows you so many languages, regional feat options, and equipment).

Fourth- Implementing home-brew rules. I'm sure you don't use the exact rules in the PHB and if there are changes, we as players should know about them, for example, no Attacks of Opportuinity or full/half hp with a full night's rest.

Fifth- Character builds. It would probably be beneficial for you as the DM to know where we want to go as a PC (class wise) and also to eliminate anything you might deem....over-powered.

Of course, these are just suggestions to help you to run this sorta game with mechanics and you need not heed anything listed above. Hope something in there was helpful though. Looking forward to gaming :D.

While it slows the game down a bit, I've always preferred the PBP (or PBEM) games where the DM handles the dice rolling for all major instances (completely behind the scenes if possible). The element of surprise is preserved because basically you still refer to the DM to see if the roll made it anyway. Players post their actions, DM responds with results in descriptive prose, with the numbers hidden as much as possible (often in parenthesis or notes at the bottom of the post if you really need them).

I've been looking for an FR PBP for a while now. I'm throwing my name into the hat.

-Yeah, I would think once a day...

-RW, you do this stuff. Any tips? Advice?

Make sure above all else that you yourself enjoy the story as much as the players. Nothing kills a thread faster than noone at the helm.

Let the players have free reign to build upon their characters, and concepts, but be strict if things seem to drag on with no conclusion. This might mean a lengthy dialogue with a patron, that may or may not have anything to do with your story. If it's fun, great. If it seems to be banter, with no goal, head it off (within reason).

Focus on the story, more than the numbers. Sometimes it's fun to do something the rules don't exactly support (ie: killing things with Magic Missle). That said, no tarasque riding halflings, firing lightning from their rears and clubbing dragons with spoons.

Always know where you're going. If nothing else, write down the goal, and fly by the seat of your pants from there. Don't start with a great concept/ opening, and wing it. Threads tend to die out quickly that way.

Be loose with the pace, but stick closely to what you set. If you say once a day, and it's been 3-4, move along. But also, make sure one poster doesn't do 4-5 things, before another can do one. Try to make sure there is a semblance of order, but break it where one person seems to be doing more.

I'm sure there are a few other things, but those seem to be the important ones.

-Alright, here's the "back cover" to my campaign:

“Calimport? My purse is heavier each day for its existence and its commerce. Much of what passes hands in that city of sin may not seem morally or ethically right to most, but another’s business is just that. Balduran taught us well with his example: ‘Judge all things in life but not in business, for morals and ethics do not balance the scales when the deal must be weighed up’. Me, I hate slavery and everything to do with it, so I make certain to involve myself not in it.”
-Lord Aldeth Sashenstar, Merchant Lord of Baldur’s Gate

“Calimport? It’s like a grand card game in which everyone holds aces in their sleeves, everyone knows everyone else’s hand, and yet the final throw-down’s always up for grabs. In a lot of ways, it’s not who wins but how you play the game. Heckuva place it is, guv’nor, but only go there if you’ve got a golem watching your back.”
-Foxilon Cardluck, Halfling bon vivant and first mate of the Realmsmaster

The winds of intrigue blow as often as the sand is common in the legendary nation of Calimshan. As people go about their daily lives, power groups and individuals control them from afar, without them even knowing it. Such has been Calimshan for hundreds of years. But, a new power has emerged, interlopers from afar, who seek to change the ancient nation forever!

-So, with that, who is still interested? Everyone will still have character sheets, stats and such, but in the actual game, I am going to be keeping things more free-flowing, with less rules, and more actual RP. I have access to most books, so all of the Core classes are available, except for those that uses different rulesets (Tome of Battle, Tome of Magic, Magic of Incarnum) that I am not familiar with.

Sun elf fire mage?

Or even better, a Moon Elf Cleric of Shevarash. Maybe sent to Calimport to find and make a conection with it's underworld and through that it's trade to the underdark where his church hopes to find a specific merchantile business and tamper with it's goods to further unconvience the drow it does business with.

Yes, that sounds like fun.
#50

Dark_Wizard_02

A rough character concept:
A vagabond from Tethyr with family history going back to exiles from Cormyr and damn proud of it. Well their side of the story anyway; this is, if you actually believe them. He's the knavish sort (but with a heart of gold, well maybe decently polished silver), a bit of a dabbler too, mostly odd skills useful for a traveler and sword-for-hire. In his typical routine, he accompanies trade caravans looking for work as a guard or scout. When he makes enough, he sticks around town until his coin runs out. Then it's back on the road with another caravan towards the next trade town.

Mechanically he's probably a Fighter/Rogue maybe with an eye towards Dervish if Complete Warrior is allowed. The fleet footed, constantly on the move fighting style suits him. If it's possible, maybe Scout/Wizard aiming for Swiftblade. Similar style based on speed and mobility.

If I were to run a PbP game, I would be wary of mechanics in general. I have found that mechanics tend to damage the pace and the narrative feel of battles. To me, the pacing and flow (along with the generally better descriptions) are one of the finer points of free form RPing. It definitely seems like LK is trying to get a free form feel for this game. With the right group of posters, you shouldn't have a problem with God-moding. However, even without God-moding, you tend to not have deaths that do not involve self-sacrifice or are narratively powerful. Personally, if I were in charge, I would set up guidelines to how things work, but keep actual mechanics out of it. Anyway, there's my two cents.

Edit: I thought I had read both pages, but apparently only the first one. If you are using character sheets, I would say use those as a good determiner on what a character could actually do, rather than rolling dice most of the time (or really at all). Spells, feats, ability scores, etc, should give pretty good parameters without you actually having to continually use the numbers themselves.

I'd be happy to offer my services :D.

As the rules are concerned, I would see them more as a guideline than actual rolling of dice to represent the character's level of power in reguards to what we as PCs can type. Hence no uber-massive fireballs from a lowly wizard or making 7 attacks against a dragon from a lowly fighter. Anyways, I like the campaign concept and should have a character idea for it soon.

I'm interested, since my last game finished last month and I still have a lot of summer vacation left...

Rough concept: A half-elf (half-moon elf) LN cleric of Waukeen from Waterdeep, in Calimshan to look into a merchant company that he's been thinking of investing in. He's a real city-boy, and the kind of merchant who sells to the highest bidder (regardless of who the bidder is and what they're going to do with the goods) and scrupulously keeps to a contract. Even if he finds out that the guy buying a large shipment of longswords is really a Cyric-worshiper arming his underlings for a coup, a deal is a deal.
