It occured to me that with the retcon that now not all souls are claimed by their patron when they are on the Fugue plain, only a chosen few, Kelemvor becomes the single best god to worship. If a major reason to choose a patron deity was to avoid the fate of the faithless or false in the afterlife, then worshiping Kelemvor would be a good idea since you are guaranteed to have to face him. And he is (hopefully) more likely to favor worshipers than all the other souls he has to deal with.

I wholeheartedly agree. Kelemvor has always been my favorite deity, and I am most happy he is still around. And with the amount of souls clogging up the Fugue during WOTC's massacre of the 4misbegotten Realms, he'd be uber powerful, no? :P

-Another blow to the Forgotten Realms' afterlife system. I thought the old way couldn't be worse? I was wrong. Talk about dumb and dumber. Like the movie.

Kelemvor's 'Lady Love' was murdered, and he did absolutely NOTHING about it.

That makes him a complete butt-hole, as far as I'm concerned.

And don't hand me that 'its not his portfolio' crap - he's the god of DEATH, and he can legitimately bring that on ANYONE.

Even if they did, Kelemvor still gets to decide your fate, unless you are one of the lucky few to be grabbed by your deity. So best to worship the guy you have a good chance of having to answer to anyway.

-He stopped loving her, as evidenced by that final tear that he shed, and Cyric "drinking" it.

Doesn't mean he didn't still care for her, just that they could not be together. I could imagine him being at the front of the divine lynch mob going after Cyric, and only being stopped by AO. And now he is using his posistion as supreme arbiter of the dead to gain converts to increase his power to be able to get revenge regardless of AO's wishes.

What was that in?

The last book I read was Prince of Lies.

Vraak.

-Don't know. I never even remembered Vrakk until you began harping on him. He never stood out, to me.

I read Prince of Lies immediately folowing Crusade, and since he was the ONLY charatcer taking part in both, he stood WAY out to me.

He was so much... deeper... then Obould - almost like an Orcish philosopher. One of the designers mentioned to me that he would make an appearance in the Cormyr adventure, but it was either cut, or so minor I didn't catch it.

I'm going to have to save him in 4e - he SO needs to still be around.

-Yes, perhaps he is one of the numerous "monsters" that the PCs plow through. That's the end of that, sadly.

-It's not looking good, since an Orc's lifespan is what? About 40 years or so? Their natural lifespan.

Which was magical in nature, and could even be blamed for his survival.

The reason why the Spellplague is such a great plot device for the 4e changes is because it's effects were so completely random.

I'm thinking he was chugging a healing potion jjust as the wave of Cerulean energy rolled over him...

and super-charged its effects.

You know the guy Tom Hanks portrayed in The Green Mile.. think HIM. :D

So Kelemvor is now the Lord of the Underworld as opposed to being the guy who just controls the punishment of the Faithless?

I actually like that.

Everyone now has to obey the DEATH GOD! BWHAHAHAHAH!

-Like nax said, no reason to worship any other patron. Especially if, half the time, they don't even bother with you in the afterlife anyway.

-I wish that the Forgotten Realms could just have a normal afterlife, for a change.

What is a [i]normal[i] afterlife? We have several competing theories in RW, including some where there is no afterlife.

-One where you aren't screwed at death for having specific beliefs. So far, the Forgotten Realms are 0/2.

Is the afterlife why you worship Sune? I never assumed that really made much sense in the first place. I assume you worship Sune so you'll get love in the physical life.

-Why worship anyone, then? Anyone can act in a way designed to have specific things happen (get girls, get money, get whatever) without following a deity's dogma.

And the reality is that in a polytheistic society you worship many of the gods, mostly as needed for whatever task you are trying. Gond if you are building something, Sune for love, Kelemvor to watch over a recently deceased loved one, etc. Most people would not worship a single god, and the only reason they felt forced to in the Realms is the afterlife issue.

People pray for stuff all the time in RL despite the theoretical ability to get it all.

Sune presumably helps make getting love easier.

Of course, interventionalist gods in D&D have never been very popular for actually doing stuff related to their portfolio.

-And, a equally large number of people who don't follow any organized religious dogmas don't, and are still successful in the pursuit of love, money, power, fame, etc.
