Known Mage Schools of the Realms

May 02, 2011 10:36:10 I am trying to hunt down this list (created as part of an EnWorld/Realms-L project I believe...) and the link on EnWorld leads nowhere. Has anyone got a copy of this list or know where it is currently available? Thanks for any help!

May 03, 2011 6:12:50 I dont think that project ever got off the ground, I never saw anything ever become of it, and all the links to it are dead. How ever, IM sure working together as a comunity, we could generate our list.

Uhm lets see, Id imagine any sizeable city would have a arcane school of some sort, I just cant think of any specific named ones at the moment,
Uhm theres the Watchful Order of Magists and Protectors (wizard guild of Waterdeep), although a guild I could still see it functioning as a school as well, or at least be affiliated with a school, perhaps the School of Magists and Protectors maybe?

Theres Six Tyrul Towers in new Myth Drannor, dont know much about it, just got the name from one of the LFR adventures.

The Host Tower of the Arcane in Luskan, I guess maybe it wasnt really a school either more like the headquarters if the Arcane Brotherhood, but they had apprentices there too didnt they? I'll have to reread up on that but i think they did magical training there as well. And I guess its destroyed in 4e.

and.. thats all the ones I can think of at the moment, If I come across any more I'll be sure to post them
Anybody else got anything?

at one time Blackstaff tower

there was a school in Silverymoon of some sorts

and Symbuls guild called wahtever I cant remember, that trained sorcerers.

and then there was also the tower where that one mage lived that Drizzt visisted and got his other scimitar.

May 03, 2011 16:01:15 The Watchful order didn't really formally train, at least not from what I read of it, it more acted as a method to hook master up with apprentice. Which was, I gathered, rather the norm for the Realms guilds. Might have been Magic of Faerun, but I believe it was stated that formal academies were very rare, with most places not really having them in a formal sense.

As to formal schools (as opposed to a lone Master with a handful of apprenti), off the top of my head...

Almraiven, in Calimshan, had three I believe, though I'll be damned if I can recall any of their names.

One in Erlkazar, on the shores of the Lake of Steam, run by the Church of Mystra I believe.

Two in Waterdeep, one being run by the Eltorchul family, another by the Wands family, and the last being run by the Blackstaff.

The War Wizards were reputed to have an academy somewhere , though I don't recall it ever being named, and I believe there was another one in Suzail perhaps, though from what I recalled, like most places, Cormyr relied on the traditional Master-Apprentice relationship.

Silverymoon had several, but I believe they were all consolidated into the Lady's College.

The Red Wizards had several, though I can't recall any of them ever being named in print, and I might have gotten that from NWN2:MotB, but it was such a great game, I say make it canonical.

There were certainly at least a few others, but I'm drawing a blank at the moment. Most of the other ones I'm recalling were ruins and lost to history, which seemed to be the most common fate for magical academies in Faerun, usually destroyed by rival wizards.

May 03, 2011 16:59:36 In post-Spellplague Waterdeep, the House of Wonder has become an academy for wizards. Featured in the novel, Circle of Skulls, by James P. Davis. Still mostly 1v1 training, I think.

May 22, 2011 0:58:52 Sshamath contains 11 schools of magic, one for each "pre-4E" school of magic, one for generalists, one for elementalists (3.5e Elemental Savants) and unofficial (not recognised by the ruling body of the city) school of shadow magic.
