Neither side, however, is supposed to be baby-eating Realmsian EEEEEVIL, so Thay is out and the Shadovar controlled lands are probably out too. The PCs need to be able to switch sides regularly and make and break alliances of convenience, so making a dominant evil power run the region would limit that. The idea is that, after their employer loses the battle, the PCs will have to make their way through hostile territory to safety, taking what they want or need from whoever crosses their path--a bit like the 10,000 greeks who roamed through the persian empire after Cyrus lost his bid to take the throne from his brother Artaxerxes, but on a much smaller scale. So, where would it be appropriate to set that kind of a scenario in the new realms? Right now, the Moonshaes seem like a possibility. Plenty of infighting and raiding that could lead a disgruntled brother or cousin to raise a small force and try to take over some holdings by force. (It's certainly within the celtic/icelandic tradition that the depictions of the islands has drawn upon in the past). Is there a reason they wouldn't work? Or somewhere better? Icewind Dale and the ten towns, etc (at least as depicted in the CRPGs) seem like they might have been a good spot for that kind of thing too but I've no idea what happened there in the spellplague timeline of the realms. Tethyr was the traditional place for that kind of thing back in the earlier editions but I don't know what happened to it in the 4eification of the realms. Impiltur has gone in that direction from the writeup in the FRCS, but I don't know how far it has really gone and was never very familiar with it in previous editions. |
