Liriel Baenre: speculation on her whereabouts in 1479+

Liriel Baenre, daughter of Gromph Baenre... where might she be wandering in the post-spellplague 1479+ era? And considering her devotion to Mystra, who might she worship now? Let's speculate!

I'd put her in Rashemen, as one of the masked Wychlaran. She could have helped in the Witch War by infiltrating the durthan, and weakening them from within.

That's a point. Where is Thorn now that there is no mention of Lythari?

The question is, is she still a drow? :D
Don't think that she would be a wychlaran, after all the trouble there and I'm not sure if they would welcome her so easily. Maybe after a while she would have helped the Rashemi if she heard of the new problems there, but maybe she was during this time far away with her new two companions. Where was Hlammach? Haven't found it on a map, but never really looked for it. I got the impression she was something like a mercenary in this time and so I think she could have shown up where trouble is and where she could stay without being so much rated for being a drow.

She and her companions may well be dead; an exiled drow who was a follower (if not cleric) of Mother Mystra, a Moonhunter Lythari Champion of the Dark Maiden, and a Star Elven Mage/Thief.

Rather than try to reconcile the elements that no longer exist (and I can count several) I think these three will have, sadly, met their end somewhere. It would be a fantastic set of novels (hint hint WotC) chronicling how these three survived and moved on but I really doubt it will ever be told. Too many potential pitfalls for anyone but Elaine to tell it, and I doubt that Elaine will get the chance to do it herself. A tragedy.

As for Liriel's drow-ness, well she is a Baenre. So unless the First House (including Quenthel) has been "reverted" (wasn't it done on Miyeritari bloodline rather than personal alignment) I think that Liriel is still Drow.

I agree - I would LOVE to read a trilogy follow-up of Liriel, seeing how she survives through the spellplague and beyond (honestly, I think Liriel would've survived and found new ways to do so). But you're right in that WotC has promised to never publish any new novels set before 1479. Seems like a bad decision.

I'm with Therise on this one. I would like to see both.

Give me two new Elaine-written trilogies, one during the spellplague and one about afterwards. And to be quite honest I don't care that this opinion evidences blatant fanboyism. That kind of bridge would bring me wholeheartedly (but with regrets) into 4E.

...and having just gotten to the end of my third Drizzt Book (to contrast with Liriel's 3) and am sure without a shadow of a doubt which of those two Drow I would rather had made it into the 4E publishing plans had I been given the choice.

-I say she's dead. Killed by some nobody.

-I find those sorts of deaths more poignant. For example, Isildur being killed by some random Orc's arrow was a more poignant death than Theoden's, being killed by the Witch-King. Reminds us that, despite our accomplishments, we are all mortal...Such deaths also cause greater emotional response . George Harrison, he died from cancer, sure, but he lived a decently long life, and had time to prepare himself for his impending death. John Lennon, his life was tragically cut short in the prime of his creative life. The latter evokes more emotion. The question of "What could have been" will always remain.

I doubt that. As I recall, the Wychlaran accepted her in the novel Windwalker, and if not she is not found in Rashemen, then I think she would be found on Ruathym. Where she may very well spend the rest of her days as "Little Raven".

There is a short story in Best of the Realms III : The stories of Elaine Cunningham set after Windwalker called "Answered Prayers" which has Liriel, Thorn and Sharlarra in Hlammach, Impiltur. The story specified her as a cleric of Mother Mystra. Nobody is assuming anything, Proin.

Also, I think the events in Windwalker closed the door to her becoming a priestess of Eilistraee (although it did seem things were going that way through the 2nd novel, Tangled Webs). Even the 3.5 stats that ppl did up for Liriel after Tangled Webs was published suggested that she'd go the Eilistraeean route, but it wasn't to be. Not that Mystra survived much longer than Eilistraee.

First, she was not described as someone who is only sitting around and doing nothing. She is the adventurer type of being, ever curious, want's to have something to do, needs a goal, and get stronger with magic and the like.
Second, well there is this little story mentioned above. It describes what she had done 10 years after Windwalker and in some sentences what she had done in the time in between. All the more this story convinces me, that she never would be the Little Raven spending her days on some backwater island. ;)

Way to remind everyone of yet another loss thanks to the idiotic Spellplague. Woo.

I believe Elaine's said something about how many of her characters couldn't have lived long enough naturally to survive till the time of the Shattered Realms. Still, if Elaine wrote some new books about Liriel or Arilyn or Matteo, it'd be fantastic. It'd have to be set in the Realms of course.

On one hand, you are right. However, after the insanity of the Spellplauge, I would think that she would have wanted to flee to somewhere "stable" and familiar. Be that place Rashemen, where she could indeed become a Wychlaran if she wished (I think they would bend the rule for her to be honest.), or "on some backwater island", the home of her dead "Father" Hrolf the Unruly.

-Despite all of the changes to the world, I don't believe there would be any one place that Liriel would "flee" to. She really didn't have a home, per se. Menzoberranzan? Certainly not. Rauthym? There were more "haters" there than people who appreciated her. Rashemen? The land itself would remind her too much of Fyodor, I would think.

No, I seem to recall at least one village on Rauthym who praised her. She saved them from an attack by some deep sea race... I can't remember the name of them to save my life... I'm pretty sure she said her name was "Little Raven" to them.

Hrolf the Unruly, and although I am sure his full name is given at some point I just scanned Tangled Webs and he introduced himself as:

"Ibn," the first mate supplied "Just Ibn."

Hope it helps... and dear gods but do I need to reread that series. Just got Dalkwalker on Moonshae through the post today though so...

I would picture Liriel alive and well in 1479. Maybe she lives in one of the more cosmopolitan cities as a teacher of magic (living in an old temple of Mystra) or maybe she became a cleric of Selûne, as she absorbed the vestiges of Mystra?
Maybe she has still issues with her father, who is also still alive?
I for one would like to see new stories about her in 1479 and onwards.

Hmm... who should still be around...?

Queen Amlauruil (assuming that she is simply vanished and not dead), Elaith, Arilyn (although she'd be getting on in years if she is), Liriel, Thorn, Sharlarra, Jill, Lamruil, Wyn, Morgalla, Foxfire...

Those are the major (and some minor) ones I can think of.

Aye, Ibn. Though Ibn's dislike of Liriel did lessen somewhat... So he at least doesn't hate her as much as he used to. I also believe Hrolf's brother training Liriel had to have at least cooled some of the distrust... Well, that and she was Fyodor's "woman", who the village held in high regard.

It's not a spelling error, technically. Originally, several early publications - including this book set (in 2E / early 3E) - had her as Lloth and not Lolth. It's now standardized "Lolth" for all 3E+ pubs.

And I have my own problems with english, it is not my mother language and I am not used to write much in english. So far, I have only read in English and that's a lot of easier. ;)

As I mentioned in our PM chat, ideally a Swordmage, but possibly a straight Fighter or Sorceror. Sex and gender don't really matter to me in this case. In my Realms, Liriel has settled down in Rashemen and continued her studies as a Witch of Rashemen over the past decades, and can still be found there in 1479 DR. As for her potential offspring, I prefer the wanderer personality myself, so ideally the child would leave the nest so to speak around fifteen or so to wander Rashemen at large on his/her own, then a couple years later begins traveling the Realms at large, perhaps eventually being drawn to the Underdark as a sort of right of wo/manhood (Fyodor's blood speaking here). Since I've always considered the half-drow lifespan to be half that of a normal drow, the "child" in 1479 DR would have quite a bit of skill under his/her belt.

This is interesting, but personally, I'd be tempted to switch it up. A son with a talent for wizardry, who doesn't believe he can find contentment with the Vremyonni, and a twin sister who takes up the ranger's path and follows him as he leaves to study foreign magic. While I pictured Liriel only bearing one child of Fyodor's, that child's interactions with half-kin could make for some delicious roleplaying. Were I to do it, though, I'd give Fyodor's child fifty years or more over the twins, so that he/she has an advantage in experience and wisdom, even if he/she isn't necessarily on the best terms with his/her half-kin.

To be honest, it could be just about anyone. However, I kind of envision him being another Rashemi warrior. Maybe Liriel fancied him simply because he resembled Fyodor in more ways than one. Maybe it was a random fling that ended in her pregnancy. Maybe she had feelings for him but he was cut down in a battle with Thay. Personally, I'm leaning towards the second option, but I haven't decided.

As for the second statment, that's why I envisioned Swordmage originally (trying to get the best of both worlds). Never did consider the child's sex or gender.
