Maybe you could develop the environment of the project you wrote about in th eoriginal post... ;)
A drow Patrol which comes from Cormanthor? that's what you said?...
When should it take place?

Say twenty drow on horseback would do. Night time guerilla tactics using crossbows, a few magicusers, lots of poison.

-If you go back to the Drow vs. SEALS thread, you'll see that someone (was it me?) statted out the average Drow patrol (though I think it might have been an Underdark patrol, since the Fighters in the group were wearing adamantine armor, which became a point of contention). ;) :P

Lords of Darkness (3E version) has a full chapter dedicated to the Cormanthor drow, including a full write-up of one of their strongholds, equipment, NPCs et al, if that helps.

Darkness is nothing a set of wands of ultravision/darkvision can't help solve.

Are there no nightseeing breeds of horse on the Realms? Perhaps the drow ride those.

I agree that risking a broken leg on a horse is dangerous for fastmoving scouts, so the light hating drow would likely conserve their horses for dusk and dawn and use vision enhancing spells on their mounts during special night missions.

Well I'm no willing to go through that tedious crap :P I also need opininions that most people here can agree on ;)

-What, don't want to go wading through crap? I understand. Only one person was really arguing against adamantine armor, though, so it really wasn't a case of everyone disagreeing (and, no, that one person is not who you probably think!).

Yeah, but they're bred on the Sword Coast, Amphail I think to be exact, by the Hawkwinter family, and not that easy to come by.

@Ody,

Be nice or I'll put you in for a transfer to the secretarial pool. :P

Very nice... I think such horses would be steeply prized indeed. Perhaps half a thousand gold for a good bred heavy horse or warpony. These would have mechanically be horses with darkvision out to 60 feet, right? Or are they from an older source?
#17

Stigger

Jun 12, 2009 16:34:09
Well, 2e listed them as having infravision out to 60', and noted they didn't react poorly to spells going off near them or casters hurling spells from their backs. I don't recall the horse list in Champions of Valor including them, though it did include the Amphailian Grey breed that the Hawkwinters were a specialized strain of.

-Yeah, that'd translate to Darkvision of 60' now.

BTW, dozens of nocturnal animals were not handed any sort of darkvision in the rules, e.g., owls or cats. And IMHO low-light vision ain't something that will help them at night. I would assume that they didn't get it for game-balancing reasons, as the sneaky folk amongst the familiar-users would obviously hunt down the best fammy available.

Druids and wildshape seems a more likely reason to me... though I don't really think that's as broken as its made out to be unless you're really stretching the rules and lawyering the exact phrasing...

well,

they could use that phantom mount spell.

they also might of brought up a few of their riding reptiles.

according to some long lost and forgotten article they had a portal to the underdark or access to one.

Outside, under a Moon that's at-least half-full, the horses' low-light vision should allow them to see perfectly well.

Characters with low-light vision can see outdoors on a moonlit night as well as they can during the day.

It might be telling that Selune can have influence on the raiding tactics of the Cormanthyr drow. If they want to be mobile, the horses are essential in scouting, but only on forestroads under a clearcast moonlit nightsky can they readily take advantage of their horses low-light vision.

Drow rangers of experience can share a darkvision spell with their horse if it's their animal companion. Perhaps these types wander about solo when the weather conditions are unfavorable for the other scouts. A sixth level ranger with horseback archery feats could harry a party for a considerable time, or advance unseen at night for reconnaissance and quickly gather reinforcements.

Eilistraee still seems to have the Seldarines best hunting advice, which is pretty apt for certain warfare. Hunt under the full moon, running naked with spells in mind and blade in hand. Dont underestimate the use of the Art to protect, or to enhance a hunt with communication or distraction spells such as message, dancing lights, ghost sound or animal messenger. The element of surprize is the essential for a hunters victory, so when it's lost it can quickly be regained through clever magic use.

-Lot's of stuff isn't done for game-balance reasons, sure.

Dire Bats make good flying mounts (large with 200 lb carrying cap.; good maneuverability and blindsense) in forest conditions when handled properly. They are mostly prevalent in the Lost Hills south of Cormyr though.

-Yes. But only if they wear their sunglasses at night.

Why? There's nothing in the rules that say that they suffer anything at night? Apart from some fancy but otherwise non-relevant descriptions in some early novels? (Remember that drow in WotSQ did not suffer that much under the bright skies?) But I guess I am right in assuming that you were just having a jest on their behalf ...
