| #1overworkeddmFeb 18, 2009 16:50:51 | I just recently took over running a campaign that I was playing in. The previous DM is a friend of mine that just doesn't want to DM anymore, so I stepped up to prevent disaster. The pc's are all 6th level. As far as they go, we have a goliath fighter, a drow rogue/duskblade, an archery specialized fighter, a rogue/cleric of mask(my former character), a paladin of lathander, and a wizard. At the moment the group is not very well liked by the church of cyric, but other than that they don't really have any enemies, and at the moment they don't really have a purpose. They have interacted with the churches of lathander, and selune, and my former character is the son of Orniiv fandarfall, one of the leaders of the shadow thieves of Amn, and also a priest of Mask. The characters are currently in Amn, with no real direction in mind, I have several ideas, but I thought I would see if the sages of the realms had any ideas for me. As always, thanks in advance for any help. Oh and almost forgot, we are playing in 1385 DR, and using 3.5 rules. |

I do have some ideas that are vastly more specific, but I'm asking if anybody else has any other ideas, just for fun. I'm sure the spellplague will come up eventually, but we are currently pre-spellplague, and the party's alignment is mostly good, with the cleric/rogue and wizard both being CN. |

As for campaign ideas, Amn is mostly a commercial power. The PCs could be hired to escort a shipment (or caravan) of high importance, too high to depend on regular caravan guard or men-at-arms. Perhaps the merchants are affiliated with someone the PCs know (such as a member of the Shadow Thieves, or a devout worshipper of Lathander/Selûne), or perhaps you were just the cheaper choice among those powerful enough to insure safe delivery of whatever you're guarding. Depending on the road taken, you could have the party fight off bandits/robbers/pirates and then ogres/trolls/sahuagins, which can all be made into appropriate encounters for a 6th-level party. To make things more interesting, note that Amn and the Shadow-Thieves respectively commercial rivals and dangerous enemies of Waterdeep and the Lords' Alliance they're a member of. The caravan the PCs are escorting may actually be a weapon/poison/monster/etc. destined to attack/weaken/infiltrate one of the Alliance's cities, most likely Waterdeep or Baldur's Gate, but perhaps Berdusk, Elturel, or Iriaebor in the Western Heartlands. Too keep the effect of surprise, don't let the PCs know what exactly they're guarding until they get to their destination. And as a final, optionnal word of advice, I'd suggest you don't keep playing your character if you take over the DM role for a long-term campaign. There's certainly a possible alignment conflict, and a party of 5 is already hard enough to manage, especially if you're not used to DMing. Don't drop your character entirely, though. He should still remain one of the important NPCsof the campaign, as an ally and contact for the party, or perhaps as a rival. It's even fine if he tags along with the party for a few encounters once in a while; just don't make him a permanent member of the party. You'll have plenty of characters to manage (as in all the enemies and NPCs the players meet) not to need to have a single character who follows the party everywhere they go. |
