Magic Dart Pricing

I have another query relating to magic weapon prices.

Now are darts used up (or stand a chance of being used up) when attacking a foe with one? If yes, the pricing in the DMG makes absolutely no sense: For arrows, bolts and bullets the 2,300 gp minimum is for 50 of each. Now in the description of darts, it doesn't state that the dart is consumed in the attack, yet it describes darts as very similar to arrows - and after all, if you think about it why wouldn't a dart be used up. But darts are sold separately, so 1 plain +1 dart apparently costs 2300 gp and 5 sp - which is surely ludicrous. Even if the dart isn't used up you can only really use it once until the foe had perished, at which point you could retrieve it, so why would it cost relatively the same amount as say a sword which you can use every round?

I was thinking about simply changing things so that the 2300gp and 5sp was for 20 or so darts, but this doesn't really seem correct as 1 dart is the quivalent of 25 arrows moneywise, and I wondered if there were any alternatives hinted from other books etc. or things you guys may have thought up yourselves...

Due to the actual damage they cause, I always kept darts cheap--real cheap. And they should definitely be reusable.

Though, it was always roll a D6 and see how many you find after the fact, in my case. If they scored every time, then that's a different story.

Hmmm I just wondered if there actually was some sort of proper method to working it out, as the DM guide seems to suggest that merely one dart is 2300gp and 5sp (anything with +1 is at least 2300gp). I didn't want to get it wrong that's all

Do keep in mind a couple of things: Ever since 3RE (or 3,5E), you don't need to create 50 magical bolts or arrows or sling bullets, as they are already considered magical if fired from a +1 weapon. So while one could actually enhance a set of missiles, it would be more useful to create a weapon which fires these missiles until it is destroyed. If you want to create magical missiles for more than one chap, i.e. distribute these 50 missiles between your group before a fight, you could use a simple spell.

Darts are treated like daggers here. They do not break or get lost when thrown (any longer).

Hmmm well I thought the idea of magical ammunition was just to get more modifers to your attack... Unless they don't stack...?

I was just confused because of how inferior darts seem; the 2300gp rule seems a little harsh. I don't know. I suppose if they last it's ok

Nope, a +1 weapon fires a normal arrow and it turns into a +1 arrow after being fired, with regards to damage dealt. In regards to damage reduction, it is treated as magical too. Firing a +1 arrow from a +1 bow does not increase the damage dealt, i.e. still arrow damage +1. Unless I am mistaken. YOu always take the better value, so a +2 arrow fired from a +1 bow would give you a +2 on AB and damage, rather than the +1 of the bow. The enhancement bonuses as such do not stack.

As for pricing, a dagger also costs as much and does not go away after being thrown.

They don't stack? :O Christ

Hmm I suppose that's true ;)
