May 12, 2008 22:32:44 According to Magic of Faerûn, the Magister serves ALL of the deities of magic, not simply Mystra. More importantly, the office itself--specifically nomination and ascension--is the purview of Azuth. In fact the only references to Mystra in the entire Magister entry are found in triumvirate unison with Azuth and Savras, and in the name of one of the granted special qualities of the template.

Azuth survived the unmitigated absurdity of 1385¹. Thus until the full extent of Azuth's fate and details of his followers are revealed, we can assume it possible for the office to still exist in 4E.

¹possibly due to a timely casting of protection from ignorant focus groups and brandishing a +5 trollslaying^* quarterstaff. *note that the slaying property of this weapon only applies to the "internet" subspecies of trolls, rather than all variants of trolls typically found in Faerûn.

Your point is taken, but, FOR13, Secrets of the Magister, leads off with:
"... the mouths of Mystra made known to all who have Power, that by the blessing of the goddess, one mage shall be the Lady's champion..." [emphasis added]

And, of course, the title of the introductory chapter is "The Magister of Mystra." "The Tasks of the Magister" chapter explains that "the clergy of Savras and Velsharoon are unfriendly to the Magister, and their deities seldom have dealings with the champion of Mystra." From which, I take that they are not significantly involved in the selection of a Magister, and receive little benefit from the Magister's service.

Which would seem to suggest that without Mystra, there will be no Magister, the "champion of Mystra."

Of course, I don't ever plan on implementing the Smellplague, so it won't be an issue for me. :D

May 13, 2008 3:52:41 Since the devs said that there will be no deity of magic for 4e i dont think that Magister will be a title given to someone by deity this time around. However, i think it will still be around but will be more of an honorary title at this point. Hell, since there is no deity around to grant or confirm the title to any one wizard there could be multiple Magisters in the Realms now.

3e source seems to have retconned (or clarified possibly ) that a bit though... so the 2e source is somewhat invalid in that respect.

It's just a differently nuanced description, of which Realmslore is (productively) full, especially in matters of magic and the divine.
