Hey all! First post here. Huuuge FR reader and madly in love with the Realms. I stumbled across a piece of art the other day (currently my avatar pic) and could not believe how awesome it was. It was on a spanish website for a group of LFR gamers. Not being able to speak Spanish and all, I was sorely at a loss as to how to ask where this picture came from. I can't read the signature at the bottom, so the artist is unknown. I love the art style and the way it is done, and the scene taking place is incredibly compelling, and somehow familiar. I'd really like to know who did this, what it's depicting, or even if it has anything to do with FR at all. Any ideas? Thanks!
Welcome to the boards. That picture is the cover image of last edition's Elder Evils book, and depicts one of the namesakes going to town on the mortal realms which dare to stand against it. Not FR specific, but still relevant to an FR campaign in the grand scheme of things.

It depicts the epic confrontation of a great multi-part module called the Age of Worms from the last printed Dungeon magazines. Its the Elder Evil Kyuss, the Worm that Walks, battling a party in the town he is released in.
More can also be found in the late core 3.5 tome Elder Evils by Robert Schwalb, including some campaign advice and an adaptation to the Realms.

Seconded. Man, why can't art museums ever do exhibits of this kind of work? NNOOOOOOOO, we have to look at people who fling poo at canvases and pretend we "get it".
Back in the days of 1e at the county fair some kids from a local school displayed a bunch of work based on the 1e MM, with variations for artistic interpretation. That part of the exhibit hall was crammed with gamers who "got it"!

Which edition has the best art? Still slighty On Topic, but I have faith it will blossom into something completely irrelevant to art. In fact, I say it will do it in less than 10 posts.

For instance how important is art in a D&D book? would anybody refuse to buy a book because the art sucked? or would anybody buy a book just because it had really good art in it?

Wait! This is a brilliant idea! People keep complaining about how crappy the boards are since the change. The only way to cleanse them is simple: an inferno which will engulf the entire site in purging flame. Come! Let us unleash the liberating flames of Muspelheim and Surtr and let unbound fire sweep the clean boards!

Worms that Walk... that just nauseated me as an idea the first time I saw it... and slightly disgusted me, as worms are definitely our friends. Sure, they have a dirty job environmentally speaking, but we'd have no ground to stand on without them... this maligning of worms must end now!

Well, I would say better no art than some which ruins the theme the book is supposed to have. And yes, I would buy a book just for its great illustrations.

-Agreed. I don't have too many of the 'Core' 3e books, but in the free picture gallery that WotC has, obviously, the ones with nicer artwork, regardless of what's in the books themselves, seem more appealing. Bad artwork is the reason why I don't hold a few older, 2e books in such high esteem as some other people (and the fact that I never played 2e to begin with, so none of the rules mean much to me). Some of the earlier black-and-white artwork of the '70s/'80s/early '90s is just plain old bad.
