This is an alternate location, as per Rich Baker's excellent suggestion, for running the Keep on the Shadowfel adventure included with the 4e DMG.

Fallcrest in the Delimbyr Vale Map

Note - the town of Fallcrest, the Nentir River, and the Moon Hills (the name, not the hills themselves, which had no name previously) are all non-canon to FR. The Dwarven Town of Hammerfast is also non-canon, but the local itself was formerly occupied by the Thousand Maw Orcs.

Homebrew Lore:
In the Winter of 1381 DR, the Orcs of the Thousand Maw clan, facing stravation, raided the small settlement located around The Wildlands Rest - an Inn located at The Fork south of Citadel Adbar. The two adventurers who owned the Inn - Irvag the Bear and Grumbleham Goldhand - fought valiantly, but in the end all thirtyseven people of the small community were carried off into the western Nether Mountains by the Orcs.

Meanwhile, a contingent of soldiers from Many Arrows was stationed in the nearby Rauvin Mountains, trying to 'pacify' the local Orc tribes there and forcing them to become part of Obould's Kingdom. Scouts reported the raid by the Thousand Maw Orcs to Obould, who flew into a rage and ordered all of his soldiers into the Nether Mountains to track down and recover the victims. Unfortunately, Obould's army arrived too late to help them, for the ravenous Orcs had already begun their grissly feast. Under the order of Obould's son, who was commanding the regiment, the entire clan of Orcs was put to the sword, and what little remains that could be recovered of their victims was gathered up and brought back to The Fork, where they were interred with funery rights by a Half-Orc priest of Talos. The heads of the Thousand Maw Orcs were also collected, and a small honor-gaurd carried them within site of Citadel Adbar. The Adbar Dwarves had caught wind of the massacre and were getting ready to mount a retaliatory strike of their own when they spotted the White Flag of Oboulds warriors. After the first two Orcs approached the gate and were killed by crossbows, the third finally manage to get close enough to deliver Obould's proclamation of peace, and the nearly one-thousand Orc heads were brought forth and presented as a sign of goodwill.

A contingent of Dwarves came out of the Citadel, thanked the Orcs for the proper burial of the victim's remains, and asked that the heads be "gotten rid of" now that they have proof that the culprits were indeed punished. As an aside, a letter was given to the Orc envoy to be delivered to King Obould from King Harbromm himself.

The simple letter turned out to be one of the most historic events in Faerûn's history - in it, King Harbroom basically said that he appreciates that the Orcs now police their own, and as long as they leave him and his alone, the Dwarves would in turn not go out of their way to hunt Orcs flying Obould's banner. It wasn't much, but it was a start... the closest thing ever seen to a 'Peace Treaty' between a group of Orcs and a Clan of Dwarves. From that simple statement grew further relations between Orcs and others in the North for the next century.

In the next few years, the Fork Inn was rebuilt by an adventuring dwarf named Doosum Malletstrike. The settlement once again grew around the Inn, and all races were welcome within (as long as they minded their manners). Eventually the old Dwarf married a wonderful Halfling Cook who was escaping the Spellplague in the Tunlands, and the two had seven strong sons to carry on for them. Doosum himself only died a few season's back, and some say he was never the same after his beloved Metilda passed away, but the Doosum Fork Inn is now a town unto itself thanks to him, and is considered one of the 'livelier' places on the frontier.

Thanks Delta.

This crappy new site layout has this pushed way back to page two in less then a day.

So much for trying to continue to contribute stuff here.

-I'm on it, I'm on it. Me, and the others can only do so much around here, with things being as they are with management and whatnot.

I would've posted on this earlier, but you offended my sensibilities by once again misspelling 'Shadowfell'. :P

BTW, I thought I mentioned it in my first post, but I see I forgot - I would still use just about all the fluff from that article for back-story. No matter where you go in the Realms these days, Shar is the BBG.

I do that on purpose - I like it better that way and refuse to spell it their way - its my small slice of rebellion. :P

I suppose I could, but I really did the first one for my own 4e test game with my boys - Rich suggested that area because it is so close to the 4e FR start area.

I'm in the middle of a Cormyr Map anyway (that keeps getting pushed aside), so it wouldn't be too hard to place it there as well.

Edit: Hmmm... a lot more conversion is neccessary by placing it there. It was so much easier shoe-horning it into the Delimbyr Vale. I can't even place a Dwarf Realm nearby! The area is already part of a Kingdom and on the border with other established political entities... as written, that location doesn't make much sense to me.
