| #1colmanNov 15, 2008 8:59:43 | ![]() Above is my current working version of a map of the Thunder Peaks area between the Cormyr and the Dales, incorporating all the canon stuff I can find on the area. It's still a work in progress - I need to do a HTML version that has references to the sources that mention the sites - and there are a few homebrew sites lurking on (Baselqadra, Golden Bull) and the addition of Winterhaven and the Keep on the Shadowfell isn't exactly canon either. Can anyone see anything in the mountains (not the surrounding Dales), that I've missed? (Larger version here) |
| #2colmanNov 15, 2008 9:03:41 | Draigdurroch Tower is from the "Icy Spire" adventure in Dragon 159 - I'm putting in yet another little vale in the mountains to contain it. |
| #3markustay63Nov 16, 2008 20:34:54 | I see you've included the info from The Shattered Statue - very thorough, and excellent map. ![]() |
| #4colmanNov 17, 2008 2:42:58 | Yes, that's the Shattered Statue stuff, though I've had to reduce in scale to about one-third - the distances on that map were huge. You don't see anything missing? I apologise for the lack of artistic merit ... |
| #5markustay63Nov 17, 2008 11:42:16 | It looks great to me. ![]() What program are you using? (I like those icons) I haven't gotten around to the Cormyr/Dales area yet, so I wouldn't know if anything were missing - I only new about that ancient Thunderpeaks module because someone else was looking for a map of the region awhile back and it came up. Don't worry about adjusting the scale - I have to do it all the time (especially between the 1e/2e/3e maps). |
| #6colmanNov 17, 2008 11:59:34 | Fractal Mapper 8 - the icons are from the "Campaign World" expansion pack. |
| #7markustay63Nov 17, 2008 15:29:23 | Hmmmm... I can use my 'mad-Skilz' in vector graphics and steal those for photoshop (I've done it before from other maps), but I'm not sure if I'd get in trouble doing so from a mapping proggie. ![]() Probably. ![]() |
| #8brimstone_blackheart_dupNov 19, 2008 10:13:20 | That is a pretty nice map if I do say so myself. |
| #9markustay63Nov 19, 2008 11:40:32 | I will definately be using Colman's map as a reference whenever I get around to Cormyr. ![]() Speaking of which - I should have a 'blank' version of Cormyr up later, to go with that series of mine (those are maps missing all the roads, names, and locales - basically '4e ready'). |
| #10colmanNov 19, 2008 16:06:52 | I have a version with Underdark sites marked as well, and some more more attention given to the forest cover: the TPs are pretty heavily forested, though rocky, according to the lore I've read. MT: do you have a good icon for a cliff wall/valley side? I could do with one to mark some of the hidden vales. Oh, and side issue: am I right in thinking that encounter tables are considered as old fashioned as recessions? |
| #11markustay63Nov 19, 2008 16:34:35 | I like encounter tables, but NOT IG - I still use them to pre-determine whats in an area before a session starts, though (making them still useful, IMHO). As far as an Icon - I wish. Thats one of the few pieces of terrain I still have to completely draw by hand (and along with mountains, make me pull my hair out). I found a good site with map icons similar to those - I'll check it and see if it has anything (it's mostly buildings, but you never know). |
| #12colmanNov 19, 2008 17:13:38 | very thorough, and excellent map Ha! It was missing the Thunder Flow and Thunderholme, which is even mentioned in the FRCG! |
| #13markustay63Nov 19, 2008 17:38:55 | Checked that site - it turns out they do have some terrain, but no cliffs unfortunately. ![]() Here's the site if you want to check it out - Cartography Clipart - if you scroll to the next page or s you'll see the 'good ones' (fantasy/medieval). I'm glad you got me to go back there - I had saved all the ones I wanted as .bmp and lost the 'shadows', so now I re-saved everything as .pngs. ![]() It also gave me an idea - I'm going to have to see about extracting all the map icons out of my HOMM collection - some of those building-types are pretty sweet. |
| #14purple_dragonJan 01, 2009 12:36:59 | Colman, Awesome map of the region. I plan to use your map in my campagin. Thank you for your post. By the way, what exactly are the sites called Baselqadra and Golden Bull? Are they sites from your own campaign? Oh, one more thing, I have a version with Underdark sites marked as well..... Is it possible if you could post such a map? That would be great. Thanks again.:D |
| #15colmanJan 02, 2009 3:15:58 | Baselqadra and the Golden Bull are homebrew (the Golden Bull being a way-inn run by minotaurs and linked to the red-wizard enclave). I'll post up the underdark version later: we had a sudden funeral here last month that sort of threw everything out of sync and I haven't been near the D&D stuff for a while ... |
| #16purple_dragonJan 02, 2009 13:44:21 | An inn run by minotaurs...that's sounds interesting. I guess the barmaids there look like a bunch of fat cows.....:D . Sorry, I couldn't resist.:P I'm curious to hear any info regarding your homebew sites. Please post if you have a chance. I hope stuff in your "real" world works out okay. Funerals can be very trying... ![]() |
| #17markustay63Mar 25, 2009 0:43:41 | Just Bumping this to see if there have been any further develoments.I've finally gotten around to mapping Cormyr/Cormanthor, and I'm using this as a reference, so I was wondering if the OP had a newer version? ![]() |
| #18colmanMar 30, 2009 15:51:33 | I'm actually just picking it up again - haven't checked in here in ages - let me fill in some of the ancient sites and I'll figure out the best way to publish it. Turns out that a sudden death of a parent can knock you out for a couple of months. Who knew? |
| #19colmanMar 30, 2009 16:50:31 | Actually, here's a link to my working version http://homepage.mac.com/careilly/.Public/TP.png, for which I make no guarantees! It has 4e Underdark pencilled in and a lot of the sites from one or two of the older empires - I'm working on Cormanthyr at the moment, I think! The level of detail drops quickly once you get very far away from the Peaks. Properly, I need to do an atlas of the area with different layers highlighted. |
| #20markustay_dupApr 02, 2009 16:13:19 | Turns out that a sudden death of a parent can knock you out for a couple of months. Who knew? I'm sorry for your lose. ![]() I lost a parent a little over three years ago, and I'm just bouncing-back now. Here's a piece of my Higher-Res version of that region, which I plan to add all of the locales to soon. |
| #21colmanApr 03, 2009 3:27:44 | I'm sorry for your lose. Thanks. I lost a parent a little over three years ago, and I'm just bouncing-back now. Sounds right. Here's a piece of my Higher-Res version of that region, which I plan to add all of the locales to soon. Nice. I really should work out how to use your stuff to make player maps with minimal effort. |
| #22markustay_dupApr 03, 2009 15:35:10 | The new higher-res version of my world map is meant for exactly that. I am creating a pdf of the continent with layers, so you can print-out maps with or without locales, roads, terrain names, adventure sites, etc, etc... Should be the most useful thing I've produced to date - I'm really psyched about it (I have to admit Patrakis - and his incrdeible Waterdeep map - gave me inspiration). Perhaps when I'm done with that, I'll create yet-another layer with 4e changes.. that would be cool. Then again, 5e should be out by then. :P |
| #23krownhunter07Apr 03, 2009 15:54:12 | Perhaps when I'm done with that, I'll create yet-another layer with 4e changes.. that would be cool. Then again, 5e should be out by then. :P It would be nice if you got around to a 4e version... I rather like your maps, but as is, they don't help much. Then again, I know 4e is growing on you... so maybe we won't have to wait long, hmm? ;) |
| #24markustay63Apr 04, 2009 17:36:14 | Lets just say I've gone from growing violently ill at the mere mention, to just having that vein in my forehead throb... I suppose it's true... a person really can get used to just about anything... Although I do like a few things about 4eFR (Eminence of Araunt and the Warlock Knights jump to mind), and even the 4e rules (the ready-to-go monsters and the racial Feats), I have to say if I do do a 4e version of FR, it will be more about the challenge - I love taking an otherwise boring place and turning it into something people want to jump right in and play with. See my Ixinos map for an example, or the Returned Abeir one I did. A map should make you want to go there... and that would be my personal 4e challenge. ![]() |
| #25krownhunter07Apr 04, 2009 17:43:51 | A map should make you want to go there... and that would be my pesonal 4e challenge. I agree. I also think that your maps rock... so I truly hope you decide to work on them/it in the near future. |
| #26buddhadaApr 25, 2009 14:38:33 | This is very cool. Since you've placed Winterhaven, could you also add Fallcrest? |
| #27colmanApr 26, 2009 9:40:07 | I think I'd place Fallcrest at the point where the Easy Way crosses that river, if I was going to place it here. It could work as a trading post, with miners and (specialist) loggers and so on bringing goods down the river to continue on to the heart of Cormyr and as a staging post on the East way - maybe this is where the caravans gather and pool/hire guards before heading out on the difficult trip through the mountains on the way to the Dales. Could make it a bit of an adventuring crossroads, with lots of ruins and lawless lands nearby. |
| #28markustay63Apr 26, 2009 13:27:07 | Wasn't there an official 'Fallcrest conversion' somewhere for the realms? I though it had been placed in the Thunderpeaks. ![]() |
| #29colmanApr 26, 2009 14:24:38 | All I can find is this, but that's not an official placement either. And not in the TPs or around. |
| #30markustay63Apr 26, 2009 14:50:08 | Nevermind - I was thinking of the Keep on the Shadowfell conversion (which I've gotten confused before). :embarrass |
| #31buddhadaApr 26, 2009 17:32:40 | That makes sence - If you equate the King's road from Nentir Vale to the East Way and then look for a spot where it crosses a river you should be good. Like south of Bristar in your map? I agree that this would be a great spot. On the border of civilization but VERY close to the uncivilized. A fun spot for beginners to start. |
| #32colmanApr 27, 2009 4:34:10 | That makes sence - If you equate the King's road from Nentir Vale to the East Way and then look for a spot where it crosses a river you should be good. Like south of Bristar in your map? Well, I'd actually suggest: ![]() It's on the frontier of civilised Cormyr, close to adventuring sites in the mountains and the Hullack Forest - which is a pretty dodgy area in 4e, with bandits, monsters and worse. Baselqadra, which is one of mine, I've set further along the road, but it's meant to be primarily a military outpost, not a proper town. When you're looking at the map, remember that the whole area is largely forest or scrub forest up to the tree-line. The spot below Bristar you're suggesting is too uncivilised - I'd want to keep that area free of large towns. It should be the sort of area caravans travel through in force and at speed. |

| #34DaGrognardJun 25, 2012 19:59:10 | Anyone have a copy of this map? The links seem to be dead. ![]() Re-reading this thread, I find Markustay's off-hand comment about 5e particularly funny. |
| #35Mr_MiscellanyJun 26, 2012 1:35:19 | I sent a PM to Markus on another forum he frequents. Hopefully he has a copy or at least a good link he can send to you. |
