Missing the Realms

Jan 09, 2009 11:37:45 So, while I may not despise 4e as I'm sure many do, there are quite a few things about it that i'm not happy with.

I've read around one the board, but I didn't see anyone specifically mention it.

Is there an active project to make an alternative 4e version of FR, or should I just try to adapt 3.5 material?
I've read around one the board, but I didn't see anyone specifically mention it.

In particular, I'm very sore about the absence of maztica and the old empires, and about the removal of the all the deities. One glaring absence is the different pantheons. I dont' like one pantheon covering the entire forgotten realms, there should at least be 2 or 3, as in the real world an entire continent doesn't share the same religion.

I was going to ask about the pantheon structure of the realms, there doesn't seem to be one anymore as all Faerun seems to be governed by a single pantheon now. One of the main reasons I posed the question had to do with me being unhappy with that apparent change and to verify/see if there are any deities that are going to get attention in further books, and to talk about the possibility of other religions altogether in the realms, as opposed to just the one religion consisting of the core deities.

Jan 09, 2009 15:50:56 The Realms have gone to a 'Realms-lite' presentation, much in accord to how they (WotC) want the new rules to be used (as just a game to have fun with, rather then a 'simulation'). Nothing wrong with that, per se.

What that means is instead of hundreds of gods and dozens of pantheons, there is just one 'Faerûnian Pantheon', and the racial lines have also been blurred (although certain races may have a penchant toward certain gods, none of them are exclusive anymore).

Once again, nothing wrong with that. They merely 'tidied-up' what was an otherwise 'messy' (yet realistic) assemblage of deities.

The Realms were changed primarily so that no-one could truly 'know' the Realms - it was designed from the ground-up to disarm those FR grognards who considered FR an elitist setting.

Those people did indeed exist (I've met some), but I don't think it was as a bad a situation as WotC seems to think it was.

But whatever, only time will tell if changing everything was such a great idea.

I hope this was informative without leaning to much one way or the other. I'm really not used to doing 'neutral'. ;)

That seems in line with what was done for the 4E "core setting" (ie. there are no more multiple pantheons, such as racial pantheons).

IMO that would surely contradict the designer's stated intention of keeping the setting light in detail.

Well, even now there isn't just "one religion consisting of the core deities." Each deity has their own religion.
