Money Weight

Another thing I was wondering was how much does money weigh? I finally found a snippet of information in an example of the Player's Handbook that 50 gp weigh 1lb, but how much do other coinages weigh?

And also, what do your players do with all this money in game - I (I mean where do they put it, as once you start getting into large amounts it gets increasingly weighty to lug around) Do you use banks, or some similar system? Not count coinage weight at all?

I generally presume a fairly standardized weight for coins myself... 50gp is just as heavy as 50cp sort of thing, presuming filler metals and all that.

As to what to do with them, generally speaking my players use Portable Holes and Bags of Holding, or the Temple of Waukeen, which I've sort of interpreted as The Banking Institution of the Realms, with at least a small branch in most major cities. Not really canon, but convenient for the campaign.

-For more specifics, Ed Greenwood might be the best source. I recall a big long spiel about coinage in his compiled replies.

-In my campaign, one player always turns coins into gems (via coin turners and what not). Personally, I'd find that annoying, as a player, and not necessarily a DM. Here's a recent example: A Wizard asked the PCs, in lieu of payment, to make a 250 GP donation to the local library. The PCs only had 500 GP gems, because of this player, so they basically paid double because of him.

I think the Player's Handbook (3.5) says that 50 coins weigh 1 lb... not only gold pieces but any type, so the best to do is to sum the total number of coins and divide it by 50. I think that fast rule is good enough, but for more realistic physics... what the others said. :P

Ah that's good - that's the rule I've been using. It's just one player argued that money has different values because of it's weight, or something, so I wanted to check it up.

Hmmm I suppose bags of holding are the answer...
Any other ideas?

How about giant money bins? :D

My players use bags of holding. They once deposited cash in the past (during a time travel adventure) in a cormyrean bank, knowing Cormyr would still be around. The interest rate on 1M GP at 5% over 660 years is astronomical.

When they tried to collect Vanderghast almost had them arrested. Luckily they adventured pretty frequently in Cormyr and saved Azoun's daughter in an earlier adventure (I ran Curse of the Azure Bonds) so Azoun let them have the principal back.

Anyway I believe Power of Faerun may have some insight into this issue though I do not remember. The Realms should have banks, whether run by kingdoms or by merchant companies.

In that case I shall look into the idea

-In the first D&D game I ever played in, the ****-retentive DM gave the Paladin and Cleric in the party "tithing bags". Don't know if those were untranslated-into-3e magic items or anything, but...The basic premise was that the Paladin and the Cleric put their 10% that went to their churches in the bag, and the money was automatically teleported to the church's treasury.

-Modified slightly, something like that would be useful...

-I thought of it! "Crazy" Ali is a Beguiler...He functions as a Rogue, and as a Magician. Thus, he is doing two times the amount of work. Therefore, he deserves two times the amount of treasure! Brilliant! It's fool proof!

If you were to use that argument in-game, though, Lynnae might try to argue the point.:P

Or at least, a heart that likes gold.

LOL.

I do give him credit (no pun intended?). He seems to be kind/benign (if not truly good) more often than not.

Hmm tithe bags would be good but... that would only get rid of... 10% of the money :P

-That's why I said to modify it. Something that sends the money to the local bank, instead of the church, and without that 10% tithe.

I don't worry about the weight of money in my game because I think taking the time out to calculate it, and then handing out weight penalties ultimately just takes away from the fun of the game.

One of the reasons why in my current campaign I gave the party a bag of holding.

Sorry Lord karsus, I hadn't realised you'd said that. Thanks anyway ;)

Hmmm it seems Bags of Holding are the popular solution -I better make sure they buy one with all this money they've got now.

haha I'm getting excited - the PCs are at the climax of the current adventure. Yes! Finally they've found a wondrous item! A Cloak of Resistance +1 haha - When you're level 3 or 4 that's a good find though. Just 20 more minutes or so of play and they'll be on their way to Wheloon to begin Cormyr: The Tearing of the Weave. I'm sure they'll be able to find a Bag of Holding there.

I'm quite impressed with my PCs, they've been asking how much a lot of the treasure items weigh and have been keeping a good record of their money weight and possession weight (I modified the character sheets a little)
