4E Moon Elves seem to me to be the one type of Elf that didn't come across very well from the last edition.

I have no problem with Sun Elves as Eladrin and Copper, Wild Elves as Elf.

But the Eladrin seems to be a little too Sun Elf-ish to me and doesn't quite fit the flavour of a Moon Elf - which fits somewhere in between Elf and Eladrin

perhaps some kind of hybrid might better fit

what do other people think?

Here is a quick draft of the kind of thing I was considering...

Moon Elf

RACIAL TRAITS
Average Height: 5' 5" - 6'1"
Average Weight: 130 - 180

Ability scores: +2 Dexterity, +1 Intelligence, +1 Wisdom
Size: Medium
Speed: 6 squares.
Vision: Low-Light

Languages: Common, Elven

Skill Bonuses: +2 Nature, +2 Perception.

Eladrin Weapon Proficiency: You gain proficiency with the longsword.

Eladrin Will: You gain a +1 racial bonus to your Will defense.

Wild Step: You ignore difficult terrain when you shift (even if you have a power that allows you to shift multiple squares)

Fey Origin: Your ancestors were native to the Feywild, so you are considered a fey creature for the purpose of effects that relate to creature origin.

Fey Step: You can use fey step as an encounter power.

Trance: Rather than sleep, eladrin enter a meditative state known as trance. You need to spend 4 hours in this state to gain the same benefits other races gain from taking a 6-hour extended rest. While in a trance, you are fully aware of your surroundings and notice approaching enemies and other events as normal.

Dual Heritage: You can take feats that have either elf or eladrin as a prerequisite, as long as you meet all other requirements.

Note: It is definately similar to the Eladrin, but it has a slightly Elf bend; it wont be as dominant as either in many situations.

I reaslise the two +1 stats are outside the standard norm, but to me it emphasises the slightly different flavour of Moon Elf

-With the exception of the Teleportation to the Plane of Faerie ability, it looks fine to me.

Please, no 'return of the fifty elven subraces' thing. Just go with what's in the book, it works perfectly.

-With the exception of the Teleportation to the Plane of Faerie ability, it looks fine to me.

I had considered it to be an Eladrin variant.

But as a genuine mix between Elf and Eladrin, perhaps a Half Elf derivative could work. It doesn't have the Fey abilities of the Eladrin or the Mobility/Accuracy of the Elf

Moon Elf (Elf/Eladrin)

RACIAL TRAITS
Average Height: 5'5" - 6'1"
Average Weight: 130 - 180
Ability scores: +2 Dexterity, +1 Intelligence, +1 Wisdom
Size: Medium
Speed: 6 squares.
Vision: Low-light

Languages: Common, Elven

Skill Bonuses: +2 Nature, +2 Perception.

Dilettante: At 1st level, you choose a 1st-level at-will attack power from a class different from yours. You can use that power as an encounter power.

Dual Heritage: You can take feats that have either elf or eladrin as a prerequisite (as well as those specifically for half-elves), as long as you meet any other requirements.

Eladrin Education: You gain training in one additional skill selected from the skill list in Chapter 5.

Wild Step: You ignore difficult terrain when you shift (even if you have a power that allows you to shift multiple squares).

Eladrin Will: You gain a +1 racial bonus to your Will defense

Fey Origin: Your ancestors were native to the Feywild, so you are considered a fey creature for the purpose of effects that relate to creature origin.

-In the context of the entire setting, I find it..."stupid", for a lack of better terms. Not as a mechanical issue, as a lore issue.

I hear you, man, FRealms. Elves and Eladrin humping away making Moon Elves. I dig it!

I dunno big pete.

i had a similar weird feeling about the whole moon elf thing as one of my favourite characters was a moon elf also.

However i have decided (and happily so) to keeping the mechanic the way they are presented in the players handbook ie simply Eldarin. and keeping the physical and cultural distinction (the important part in have a distinction between elves in the first place) intact in the form of role playing and personality only.

i dont think the mechanics interfere to much to be honest.

For me it has always been a cultural distinction, and perhaps a tendency to go toward certain skin tones, hair, and eye coloring. I like 4th edition, and I like the Elves and Eladrin. In a certain sense I am still dragging my feet on whether to use both as suggested, or if Elves are the Faerun born (Wood, Moon, or Gold Elf), and Eladrin are the feyborn (read as in coming from the feywild). I know in this instance the stats might not match up, but I don't feel the Eladrin feystep ability fits with any of the old subraces.

....... but I don't feel the Eladrin feystep ability fits with any of the old subraces.

At first yes, i thought the same, but i then imagine that once the feywild crossed over and became an integral part of the Spellplague faerun it was an ability that they (moon sun etc)have learned and became familiar with, a burgeoning power...which could lead to more.

with the wild or wood elf seclusion meant that it never really caught on or has yet to be discovered maybe????

-Not really. I mean, it's not as if the Plane of Faerie was some completely alien, inaccessible place. A Plane Shift spell, or one of the many portals leading to the Plane of Faerie would have sufficed.

Yes but that is my point, the feywild was someplace accessable alright no doubts there. however only by those who studied the ways of magic etc or make use of portals.

However with the spellplague bringing it closer to the material plane, moon, elves and their brothers the sun elves discovered that they could now make brief jaunts through the plane with nothing more than a though. not needing as you say, portals plane shift etc. well something like that anyway

That is exactly what happened. Since the Sundering, the Feywild was 'split' from its connectivity to the material plane. When the Spellplague occurred, something caused the Feywild and mortal world to 're-connect' in a sense and it allows freer travel between the two.

When they came back into phase, they power to shift between them re emerged in the Eladrin on both sides... So the power fits, the flavor fits as well.

Moon/Sun/Star... all Eladrin, they only differentiate in flavor and feats.

-The Plane of Faerie was never "split" from it's connectivity to the Prime Material Plane.

-The Plane of Faerie was never "split" from it's connectivity to the Prime Material Plane.

It was somewhat removed, out of phase, split, disconnected, what have you... That is why Eladrin and Elves couldn't return to Tintiger after the came to the Realms. It was hard to do by any means... this changed with the Spellplague, as is stated in the FRCG... I was relaying known information and adding insight.

-This is incorrect. As was stated, portals to the Plane of Faerie exist all across Faerûn, and all that is needed to return to the Plane of Faerie is a Plane Shift spell. Tintageer was destroyed in a natural disaster, so that is why it's survivors never returned to the Plane of Faerie. There was nothing left for them there. Any time any of them wanted to, though, it was always as easy as hopping through a portal, or getting a spell cast for them.

big pete to mayhap use the existing eldarin without modification and without having to settle or argue over the nature of the feywild prior/post spellplague but focusing instead on the elves alone
i was thinking that you could imagine that the relatively new ability for moon elves or sun elves to "teleport" short distances through feywild regardless of class to be something that has only recently caught on or become common knowledge or practice. the horrible panic of the spellplague triggering some hidden ability instinctually that now they can control but only in small bursts without the need for spells or components etc?

this might work in your imagination without having to worry about the nature of the planes themselves at all.

i dunno just throwing out some ideas. i myself am happy with either.
