| #1jiggawha_dupFeb 21, 2008 16:02:04 | In our current planar/FR campaign we have a quite unusual group consisting of: adu'ja (plant race from Dragon #317 plus few houserule improvements, more racial levels and plant-like abilities) binder musteval guardinal illumian (modified as a template, Deneir's blessing) cleric faerie dragon (with modified racial levels) spirit shaman varoot (from Field Folio, kamerel/nerra, with racial levels, mirror-reflective-like abilities) swordsage (my character) nathri half-ghost elf (also modified) rogue before that I've allowed vaati (2e converted, younger) psychic warrior nycaloth (disguised, assassin) doppelganger voidmind (template from MM3) rogue wild dwarf half-fey druid maug (construct from Fiend Folio) fire-souled (template from Dragon #314) cleric of Kossuth |
| #2lord_karsusFeb 21, 2008 23:10:50 | -As a DM, the most exotic thing I've allowed was: Spirit Folk (Bamboo) Samurai -As a Player, the most exotic thing I've played was: Svirfneblin Sorcerer |
| #3jiggawha_dupFeb 22, 2008 1:23:27 | spirit folk, they're dope, I thought of playing one, especially with Rashemen background svirfneblin also, they have too high LA, it's dificult to play, I'd use different racial levels and feats |
| #4goblichFeb 22, 2008 2:43:40 | Heres one for ya... My DM was silly enough to let us play as gestalt characters for an Epic(lvl 21) Campaign. that wasn't so bad. What was just wrong was when I jokingly said,"Hey, let me be a Spartan, like from HALO." he said ok, so that is the most Exotic thing I have played. A HALO Spartan. The most Exotic thing I have allowed was a Yuan-Ti Halfblood or a Werelion. |
| #5jiggawha_dupFeb 22, 2008 3:19:13 | not familiar with computer games, is that a cybernetic character, I like to use psionic grafts, mechanical or biological, doesn't matter we had an entire yuan-ti party, with different bloodlines and grafts, but that's not that exotic, lycanthropes are nice, there was a werepanther once I think, back in 2E, and lythari of course |
| #6fabius_maximusFeb 22, 2008 7:38:05 | I usually don't like exotic races. Most of them have racial HD and LA, so it's tough to make a decent character with them. I'd like to play a minotaur, a thri-kreen, or a deep gnome sometime in the future. Is there a racial class for deep gnomes anywhere? |
| #7soltaresFeb 22, 2008 9:17:45 | Played - Gnomish Giant Space Werehamster (Spelljammer, of course!), Xixchil Allowed - Ogre Magi (in an 'all-monster party' that included a Wemic and a Minotaur) In 3E, I think the most exotic thing I've played was a Human. Can't seem to shake my addiction to bonus Feats... Oh wait, there was a Daelkyr Half-Blood Warlock in an RPGA game. |
| #8GothicDanFeb 22, 2008 9:18:34 | I played an Agathinon (sp?) Aasimon back in 2E. He liked turning into small birds, flying above people, and turning into nasty things like spiked grates or just heavy nets. He did 1d12 (I think) damage to any evil creatures he touched. PLUS SPIKES. |
| #9lord_karsusFeb 22, 2008 12:30:59 | In 3E, I think the most exotic thing I've played was a Human. Can't seem to shake my addiction to bonus Feats... -Same here. The last...three or four characters I've made, they've been Humans. |
| #10Bullet06320Feb 23, 2008 0:33:52 | Played a Minataur once, A mongrelman once, and in 2nd edition did an Elven Vampire F/T/M that was immune to the effects of sunlight through a wish Allowed an Awakened Wolverine once Seen someone play a human ghost once |
| #11ody_saraph_of_karsusFeb 23, 2008 1:51:04 | As A player: Half-Celestial Human Fighter As a DM: No Idea! :P possibly a sand giant Reaping Mauler |
| #12krieg_69Feb 23, 2008 5:29:07 | Played: probably my deep wyrm drow with the dragon blood subtype battle dancer Allowed: half-celestial pixie(with ottoluke's dance) paladin lvl1, ecl 11. man that character was annoying. |
| #13jiggawha_dupFeb 23, 2008 7:37:43 | I'd like to play a minotaur, a thri-kreen, or a deep gnome sometime in the future. Is there a racial class for deep gnomes anywhere? you can find it here http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/sp/20040213a we have a whole houserule system with LAs, quite different |
| #14GothicDanFeb 23, 2008 7:40:56 | I absolutely boggle at some of the characters on here... The primary characters I've played, from 2E on, in continuous campaigns: a Fairy Elf (Grey Elf), a human, an Aasimar, a Tiefling, a Fire Genasi, the above-mentioned Celestial, a human, a human, a human... And I was known as the guy who wanted the WEIRD characters. |
| #15fabius_maximusFeb 23, 2008 9:28:40 | you can find it here Oi! Thanks. |
| #16lord_karsusFeb 23, 2008 9:44:39 | Allowed an Awakened Wolverine once -I wanted to play an Awakened Bear Sorcerer, once. My DM said no. I had a cool story, too, that tied into our recent campaign that ended. |
| #17soltaresFeb 24, 2008 18:02:59 | -I wanted to play an Awakened Bear Sorcerer, once. My DM said no. I had a cool story, too, that tied into our recent campaign that ended. In my Freeport campaign, one of the NPCs is 'Blackie,' a familiar that outlived it's master (actually, he's just incommunicado, thanks to an Imprisonment spell), and has picked up a level of Sorcerer. Blackie runs a spy network. Nobody expects the talking bird to run the spy network... |
| #18lord_karsusFeb 24, 2008 18:58:18 | Nobody expects the talking bird to run the spy network... -I know I wouldn't. Hmm...That gives me an interesting idea, for my own campaign. |
| #19markustay63Feb 26, 2008 0:39:19 | Oddest thing I ever allowed? Hmmmm... I only allow PHB races in my D&D games, but in a game of Monsters! Monsters! I allowed someone to play a Balrog, while another played a Jabberwock. M&M BTW, was a game based on the T&T rules system (Tunnels & Trolls), except you played the pillaging, rampaging monsters, rather then the adventurers (who were the NPCs). Goodtimes... goodtimes... ![]() Anyhow, the strangest thing that I've ever played was a Firbolg - I had just finished reading the Twilight Giants trilogy, and the Giantcraft sourcebook, so I was in the mood, you know? Funny thing... my bro-in-law was an inexperienced DM, and he allowed me to pick and choose what to use from ANY official sourcebook, which allowed me to min-max the hell out of the guy and create an unstoppable Barbarian Shamen Runesmith Jugernaught! He also gave me a ring that made me appear as a large human, rather then a giant. However, it didn't really change my height and weight, only the way I looked, which lead to some amusing situations. I also had a 100% legal Dwarf Wizard... back in 2e! I surprised quite a few of my fellow players with that one... too bad he isn't interesting AT ALL anymore. ![]() |
| #20dmdFeb 26, 2008 8:31:02 | Allowed: Lich Wizard. Psionic Lich. Minotaur. Brass Dragon. Doppleganger. Yuan Ti. Drow. Wemic. Ogre. Shade. Half Celestial Saurial. (I almost ran a campaign where the characters were going to think they were alive but were really Spectres and were on a cursed ghost ship but I have not had the time to do it.) Played: A Voadkyn (in 2Ed). A Thrikreen (Dark Sun 2ed). A Mul (Dark Sun 2ed). A Drow. |
| #21borrisFeb 26, 2008 18:51:49 | Played: Draconic Fireborn Dwarf I really haven't played that much. I'm mway more often behind the DM screen. Allowed -Malenti cleric of Mystra (you know, those sahuagin mutants that look just like sea elves on the outside). Mind you, it was in an underwater campaign in a party along with a merfolk sorcerer, a sea elf ranger, and a shalarin psychic warrior. -Draegloth and gravetouched ghoul half-drow in an Underdark drow campaign, along with three drow. I have no problem with unusual races, but only in campaigns where they'd fit the concept. Most of the times, players have to pick something from the PHB or campaign setting, or else have a good background explaining how the character fits in the campaign. The most exotic the race is compared to the campaign, the better the explanation background will have to me. |
| #22alkasynMar 05, 2008 1:42:06 | Same as the poster above me - I usually DM dnd. But I did play some - and my msot exotic character was Fey'Ri sorcerer. Right now, Im dming for gith monk/psionic a drow spellthief, a genasi and a human necromancer, I guess thats the most exotic setup Ive dmed for. |
| #23yarethonMar 07, 2008 7:04:43 | -Githzerai fighter/mage ---> before they all turned into monks....good times. -Fey'ri fighter/rogue/assasin -Half celestial monk/paladin My group once palyed a short campaign in which all of us were Celestials trying to serve different gods in the blood war. I was a movanic Deva. |
| #24lord_karsusMar 07, 2008 7:23:58 | -As a DM, I don't allow really exotic races. It is my opinion that such races make the game harder for the DM, and other players. Does anyone else agree? Disagree? |
| #25KhaeliethMar 07, 2008 7:58:39 | Halfling werewolf rogue - Ravenloft... Nothing like being driven out of town by a mob of peasants! |
| #26gallameedMar 07, 2008 8:43:45 | As DM: Half Doppleganger/human from Silverymoon. As player: Uthgart (ice dragon bloodline) Sorceror from the Black Lion tribe turned Silverymoon college student/gentleman. |
| #27yarethonMar 07, 2008 8:56:03 | -As a DM, I don't allow really exotic races. It is my opinion that such races make the game harder for the DM, and other players. Does anyone else agree? Disagree? I agree to certain extent: In general I don't allow things like half-fiend mind fllayer monk/ duskblade/wizard/eldritch knight/spellsword or a blink dog ninja. I think it kind of ruins the fun for me. Also, unless the idea is to DM for a group of pc freaks ( planescape campaign for example), I rarely allow more than one or two exotic character in the party. example of exotic characters I would allow: Planetouched in general Some templates, like lycanthropes Avariel and other easy-to-use, intelligent flying creatures orcs, hobgoblins, half ogre, kobolds, spiritfolk, etc Githyankis and Githzerais |
| #28rinonalyrna_fathomlinMar 07, 2008 11:38:08 | -As a DM, I don't allow really exotic races. It is my opinion that such races make the game harder for the DM, and other players. Does anyone else agree? Disagree? I say, as always, whatever floats your boat. ![]() Although, I was just curious about how exotic races make the game harder for the other players. |
| #29lord_karsusMar 07, 2008 11:50:42 | Although, I was just curious about how exotic races make the game harder for the other players. -If you have a race that has, say an ECL of +2, that character is effectivley two levels higher than everyone else. As a DM, to balance things, you need to toughen the encounters you throw at the players, because of this. If a Half-Dragon can kill all four Orcs with a single breath attack, that's not much of an encounter. The Half-Dragon can't kill all four Ogres, but that makes the encounter harder for everyone else who is not the Half-Dragon. |

OK, I see that, thanks for clarifying. ![]() It seems to me like there's also a risk of the exotic character "stealing the thunder" of the other, not-so-exotic player characters. |
| #31lord_karsusMar 07, 2008 11:55:23 | It seems to me like there's also a risk of the exotic character "stealing the thunder" of the other, not-so-exotic player characters. -Oh, yeah, of course, that too! |
| #32kiioroMar 07, 2008 12:04:45 | In our campaign you're usually allowed to play exotic characters, as long as the LA + Class levels make you the same level as the party and it's feasible the character could be there. I wasn't allowed play a tiefling until we were level 2, to make an example for the first limitation. And no aquatic elves in a Thay-based campaign, for the second one. Since my characters tend to die frequently in my current group, I'm the one that has tried a few variations. Fey'ri is the next character. (most of my party is usually scared of everything. I'm not running headlong to peril itself, I just don't run before seeing if it's truly a danger... by that time, I'm all alone, be it for my benefit or doom. I'm bored to hell by general cowardice, so I can't really help it.) |
| #33jiggawha_dupMar 07, 2008 14:28:42 | Halfling werewolf rogue - Ravenloft... Nothing like being driven out of town by a mob of peasants! that's legendaryIt seems to me like there's also a risk of the exotic character "stealing the thunder" of the other, not-so-exotic player characters. yea, DM must try to make a non-exotic PC feel unique in some other way |
| #34fabius_maximusMar 08, 2008 8:45:55 | I completely forgot my githyanki merc I'm playing in an online campaign featuring a group compromised mostly of drow. |
| #35timmy82Mar 11, 2008 10:49:56 | As a DM Ive never allowed anything more that an ECL +2 But I have once played a Mind Flayer Sorcerer. |
| #36bloodtalonMar 11, 2008 15:11:20 | the ones i have allowed have been 1) half-ogre 2) kolbold 3) lich 4) and a minataur |
| #37KhaeliethMar 11, 2008 15:16:48 | Actually, allowed a minotaur once. NEVER again. |
| #38zaku41kMar 21, 2008 13:41:32 | Most exotic I've ever played was a Gnoll (First and last time I played non-core races). Where ever the party went, 80% of the time we were greeted by pikes and pitchers because of me... So now it's Human all the way for me. |
| #39michael_lightbringerMar 23, 2008 2:30:40 | Played as: brass dragon (in a dragon campaign). Allowed: kobold and orc (I'm a bit of a purist on the issue and was hesitant even to allow that). |
| #40SteelGeneralMar 27, 2008 9:09:25 | Played: - Hobgoblin Crusader of the Red Knight - Wemic Cleric of Nobanion |
| #41valgardMar 27, 2008 9:53:07 | Parties I remember belonging to or DMing to: 1: LN male Githzerai Monk/Fist of Zuoken. LN female Catfolk Ranger. CN male Drow Necromancer. CN male Fey'ri Sorcerer. 2: (His alignment changed widely and often) male Earth Genasi Barbarian. CN male Aasimar Cleric of Anhur. NE female Tiefling Rogue/Assassin. CN male Sun Elf Wizard (a normal character? Nooo, he seemed more like he belonged to the mob rather than to Evereska). 3 (This was sent in pseudo-Greyhawk/core world): LE male Hobgoblin Cleric/Fist of Hextor. NE male Hobgoblin Fighter/Master of Chains. CE male Minotaur Barbarian. NE male Rakshasa Sorcerer. |
| #42morholdtApr 01, 2008 9:51:38 | I usually play something fairly prosaic (human, dwarf) and I rarely feel the need to go far afield. That said, I did play in one very epic game once which was a war of the heavens (demons/devils vs. angels on an epic scale). I made a Marilith with the half-dragon template. It was an gestalt game, so she was ridiculously overpower. What made her truly stupid was the half-dragon template which changed her from evil/outsider to dragon. Since the other team had loaded themselves with anti-outsider stuff, they were a little surprised. Obviously this game didn't last long. Games that ridiculously broken rarely do, but it was worth the reaction when they discovered my trick. |
| #43Shemeska_the_MarauderApr 05, 2008 19:14:53 | In the same campaign I had three odd ones: a fey-touched half-drow wizard a half-yugoloth half-guardinal sorceress and briefly had a pheolarch fighter |
| #44KhaeliethApr 07, 2008 3:45:20 | Allowing an albino drow Vhaeraunite ranger who hunts Ghaunadhaurians (sp?). |
| #45rinonalyrna_fathomlinApr 07, 2008 12:13:47 | I usually play something fairly prosaic (human, dwarf) and I rarely feel the need to go far afield. Same here. I probably play humans most often. |
| #46creyzi4zb12Apr 07, 2008 23:22:12 | Scro...although the game wasn't finished. http://www.dndonlinegames.com/showthread.php?t=61549&page=1&pp=15 |
| #47ody_saraph_of_karsusApr 08, 2008 15:31:59 | Even tho I'm mostly "pro-human" I just did a Half Blue Dragon Warforged Charger.... yeah.... ![]() |
| #48rinonalyrna_fathomlinApr 08, 2008 19:11:14 | I think most people like an "exotic" character every now and then. I know I do.![]() |
| #49grey_mageApr 08, 2008 19:58:09 | As a DM: Brass Dragon; Diabolus Shadow Vampire, or the Half Firelemental Air Genasi. As a player: Mineral Template Warforged Fighter/Barbarian. I was playing a "Shield Gaurdian" Who had somehow managed to get some semblance of sentience (Int:8) during the creation process. Hrmm.... in an FR setting? A houseruled earth Genasi has to have been my favorite Character ever. Had 3 resistances, +1 NA, and a +2 bonus to hide and sense motive. |
| #50metroanimeApr 14, 2008 2:35:07 | most exotic? Most likely it was a silver dragon cleric using the Council of Wyrms rules, modded for FR. It was a lot of fun too. the most exotic balanced for regular play? A half-ogre fighter who was dumber than a sack of rocks but was a real softhearted fellow who'd been raised in a monastery of Lathander. A half-ogre named Harald. Best damn door opener i've ever played... |
| #51jiggawha_dupApr 14, 2008 8:16:45 | In the same campaign I had three odd ones: those are interesting, I wonder how the yugoloth/guardinal abilities did balance had a group of pheolarchs as NPCs, a small society in the Lake of Steam area, followers of Zaaman Rul |
| #52ShiftkittyApr 21, 2008 20:30:22 | Out of the books, a githyanki rogue. Not out of the books, I made a mistake of letting my brother create a true neutral vampire-type being. She could remain in sunlight for a decent amount of time, didn't have to sleep, and fed on fresh blood. No problem, there were going to be plenty of enemies. This was also a PC he created with no sense of right and wrong. Okay, we all thought, this should make for some good role-playing as she tries to learn what she'll need to get along in this society she has become stuck in. Oh, foolish us! What she turned out to be was my brother's excuse to cause as much chaos and disruption in the party as possible as she ignored all attempts at civilization, gleefully snacked on innocent townspeople, and left the party to make all explanations. He protested when I called for an alignment change to NE (C) until he started trying to play with, not against, everyone else, which later barred her from entering the temple they needed (no evil beings allowed!). The party left her outside on that nice sunny day... with all those angry peasants... She wasn't missed, and neither was his presence at the table. |
| #53johnkretzerApr 21, 2008 20:46:16 | Played: Half Song Dragon/Star Elf Bard Deep Wyrm Drow Druid of Silvanus Averiel Wizard/ Incantatrix Lythari Fighter/Wizard/Bladesinger Feytouch Scout (I keep saying to myself this the last spellcaster I play with a LA...but I keep doing it to myself...) I also want to play a Sea Elf at some point I also had a Moon Elf Spellthief that got reincarnated as a Volodni( rolled a 100 on the percentage dice and that what was the DM choosed) As a DM: I am generaly reasonable and willing to listewn to concepts and will allow most things that is not to outlandish. |
| #54johnkretzerApr 21, 2008 20:50:30 | -If you have a race that has, say an ECL of +2, that character is effectivley two levels higher than everyone else. The Half-Dragon can't kill all four Ogres, but that makes the encounter harder for everyone else who is not the Half-Dragon. It can be tough but I also notice it going the other way alot especialy when the other characters start gaining levels. Take the above example the 4 orgers will crush the Half dragon with ease after the breath weapon hits because he just doesn't have the HP to stand up the the damage they can produce because he is LA +3.(I.E. 3 levels down) Let not talk about what spells like Enveration do to poor LA characters either. Personaly I don't mind it as a DM all that much. It makes the game fun after all to be challenged. |
| #55skeptical_clownApr 23, 2008 16:17:00 | I've wanted to play a kobold, but never had the right group or character in mind. Most exotic races I've allowed in my games are drow, githzerai, spirit folk, and a half-demon elf. Also allowed a character to use the Frost Giant bloodlines from UA, another a star elf. I frequently use the "lesser" version of the drow," which none of my players are very interested in. Oh wait, I had a player who played one of those tree-frog people too. Can't remember the names of them. That game didn't last very long though. |
| #56littlecarp04Apr 28, 2008 16:40:02 | Played- Either Shade or Wemic Allowed- Brass Dragon... yeah that was interesting |
| #57feyleMay 09, 2008 18:03:45 | Played: 1/2 dwarf - 1/2 Red Dragon Barbarian (2nd ed before "Council of Wyrms") Wemic - Shaman (2nd ed version of Shaman) Lich (used "Reverse Dungeon" Template) 1/2 Giant - Samurai DM Drider |
| #58lord_karsusMay 09, 2008 23:58:55 | Take the above example the 4 orgers will crush the Half dragon with ease after the breath weapon hits because he just doesn't have the HP to stand up the the damage they can produce because he is LA +3.(I.E. 3 levels down) Let not talk about what spells like Enveration do to poor LA characters either. -He then takes to the air, using his wings, and hovers or flies out of range, using a bow to fire at his enemies without being hit in return. |

| #61astarvedillithid_dupMay 10, 2008 17:38:17 | I Dmed a Champaign in which my Brother was a Mindflayer barbarian w/ a purple worm mount:coolcthul . The rest of the party consisted of an abolith wizard:88E: , a drow underdarkish ranger and a Quagoth bard .... 'nuff said (it was a purple themed party)as a(n) (awesome) Player the most exotic thing I have been is a half-drow scout (constatly guarded by his half-fiend arachnoid quicksilver{which is probably the most exotic thing I have talked about} and his slightly smaller other lizard thing {he had a thing for lizards) with a few levels in druid im usualy a gnome (never a human) |
| #62ShiftkittyMay 11, 2008 11:36:30 | I Dmed a Champaign ... You DMed champagne??? Woohoo! I wanna live in YOUR world! ![]() I'm curious. The drow ranger part I get. What's "underdarkish"? (Mindflayer barbarian. I'd love to hear the backstory on that character!) |
| #63GreenKnightMay 11, 2008 12:49:59 | Let's see. I played a Minotaur Barbarian, once. And one game I DMed one of the players played a Svirfneblin (Got his ass kicked by a Germlaine, too, which is pretty much one of the few creatures smaller then a Gnome. It was pretty funny). While I was playing, another player played a Minotaur. Oh yeah, and two other players played Dragons using the rules from Council of Wyrms. Most recently, I very nearly made up a Dhampir character for a game starting at Level 14. Dhampir's, incidentally, have Level Adjustment +8! So my character would've been 6th-level. Yeeowtch! ![]() |
| #64KhaeliethMay 11, 2008 14:44:24 | And how did the aboleth get around? And why didn't he just dominate the rest of the party? |
| #65lord_karsusMay 11, 2008 16:07:59 | And how did the aboleth get around? And why didn't he just dominate the rest of the party? -Maybe it did, and they all carried it around? |
| #66rinonalyrna_fathomlinMay 11, 2008 17:26:11 | What's "underdarkish"? I was wondering the same thing... |
| #67lord_karsusMay 11, 2008 18:19:13 | What's "underdarkish"? -I am thinking it is a mundane race (probably Human), that dwells and operates primarily in or around the Underdark. Maybe I'm wrong, though. |
| #68KhaeliethMay 12, 2008 19:10:26 | -Maybe it did, and they all carried it around? i just realised the amount of sexual innuendo that could be perceived in my previous post. |
| #69lord_karsusMay 12, 2008 21:10:20 | -Wasn't that good, really. |
| #70rikkiwalkerMay 18, 2008 13:28:23 | If I ever played I would want to play a phasm ![]() To those who do not know what one is: Think Odo from Star Trek: DS9 as well as being telepathic. In their natural form they are a mass of multicolored goo I believe (been awhile since I saw the picture or read the description) and their ability is basically being able to shapechange at will as if they were 20th lvl sorcerers. Average alignment is CN and they are known for their fondness of causing trouble. |
| #71ShiftkittyMay 18, 2008 15:06:59 | Unless you planned to use the multi-colored goo form, couldn't you just use a Changeling (Eberron)? (Not a DS9 fan, not familiar at all with phasms, or Odo. When I hear "Odo", I think of the character from the series "Ivanhoe".) |
| #72rikkiwalkerMay 18, 2008 16:47:33 | The goo was their natural form. Did you miss the part where I said they could shapechange at will? They can be anything they want to be within the limits of the spell and be in that form indefinatly; changlings sound kinda boring in comparison. |
| #73reneshatMay 19, 2008 1:46:55 | There was once that a friend was going to DM a game. He told us that he was going to "bring the pain," and that we "shouldn't hold back." He gave us open access to books because all of our campaigns were too limiting. So the three of us walked out with a story about a mother that slept around and liked her men to be a little more "monstrous." Our party had an Illumian Half-Minotaur Cleric, an Illumian Half-Kobold Malconvoker, and an Illumian Half-Orc Barbarian. Oh yeah, and there was a paladin too, I think he was human. Other than that it's always been PHB (or Monster Manual sub-races of PHB races) for us. |

They can be anything they want to be within the limits of the spell and be in that form indefinatly; changlings sound kinda boring in comparison. Okay, educate me on these things, please. Do you mean you could look like a sofa or something if you wanted to*? That would come in handy when hiding! If that's the case, then yeah, they've got changelings beat all to pieces! (Hmm... must research these "phasms" for next game...) *You wouldn't "lose" spare change in the sofa. The sofa actually picked your pocket! |
| #75astarvedillithid_dupMay 25, 2008 14:37:08 | I Dmed a Champaign in which my Brother was a Mindflayer barbarian w/ a purple worm mount:coolcthul . The rest of the party consisted of an abolith wizard:88E: , a drow underdarkish ranger The Mindflayer was training to be an illithid body tamer, the Abolith was kicked out of its socienty for being true neutral, the drow was a rebel drow ( and not drizzt ) turned underdark guide (acheived by taking lvls in ranger), and... well... Crud I must have short term memory loss I forgot wat else I was going to say |
| #76astarvedillithid_dupMay 25, 2008 14:39:12 | (Hmm... must research these "phasms" for next game...) they're in the MM. |
| #77astarvedillithid_dupMay 25, 2008 14:50:31 | And how did the aboleth get around? And why didn't he just dominate the rest of the party? :88E: :coolcthul :88E: :coolcthul :88E: :coolcthul :88E: :coolcthul :88E: :coolcthul :88E::coolcthul :88E: :coolcthul :88E: :coolcthul :88E: :coolcthul :88E: He...I mean It... was Introduced around half point through my game. when they got to a shallow undrerdark pool. He Initialy DID try to control them, but wasn't strong enough to single Handedly (or tenticaly) defeat the Purple worm.... He prety much stayed underwater. But with the main villian being a Kuo toa allied with his former leader (the one who kicked him out) that wasn't to bad. (he could cast breath water and so could the bard, and freedom of movement was also very popular w/ the party.:cool ![]() |
| #78astarvedillithid_dupMay 25, 2008 14:53:50 | my last post looks weird ![]() ![]() |
| #79ShiftkittyMay 26, 2008 0:27:09 | That's okay. Starved illithids aren't known for their conventional tastes... ![]() Rebel drow that aren't Drizzt but are done well are rare indeed. I like Drizzt, but it's precisely because of that fact that I have made none of my oddball drow anything like him. None of my drow NPCs or DMPCs are angst-ridden, for example, and only one is a ranger. He spends time on the surface because he's fearless and doesn't care for the scary tales he was taught about the surface. He didn't get all dreamy eyed at his first sunrise a la Drizzt. He was more like "That's it? That's the big scary ball of fire? Pffft! Bring it on!" He can be fun to play as long as I remember "fearless" doesn't equal "stupid". |
| #80astarvedillithid_dupMay 26, 2008 2:12:12 | Dispite the rich back story there was a disapointing lack of rolplaying (mostly because most of the NPCs were either terified or mortaliezed ) 'cept the bard (unless you don't count constant humming as "roleplaying":headexplo ...:coolcthul |
| #81ShiftkittyMay 26, 2008 13:15:05 | I can't play comfortably at a table where the PCs are little more than numbers on paper. Maybe that's why I don't hang out with powergamers. I've gotten spolied rotten by this current group, where it's like they walk in the door and say "For the next x amount of hours, I am no longer a scruffy looking dude who works for the phone company and rides a Harley. I am Bormuk, an albino drow who's doing his best to keep his butt out on patrol and far away from the Matron Mothers." They totally get into character and seem to really enjoy acting out their parts. Maybe it's because they're not so accustomed to video games, which by their very nature have a barrier between true roleplaying and just trying to score high on the variables (or select the most productive option). Eh, some people prefer it that way. It's not for me though, at least not at a table game. |
