| #1upsetfrfanAug 30, 2009 18:36:43 | Hi, I was wondering if any cannon material exists on what happened to the churches of the Mystran, Azuthan, Savrasian (?) faiths after the spellplague? Did they turn into cults? As far as I can see, the timelines in the forums or on the WoTC webpages strangely leave this topic untouched. Thanks,

If you want. Clerics in 4E get their powers/spells from a ritual they undergo at the beginning of their careers. So a God can't just up and remove their powers/spells anymore. So if they go rogue of fall from grace.Enter the Churches Avengers to stop them. I really like that. So if you had a Cleric from before the spellplague you could have them using their powers/spells, and maybe drawing followers to those faiths. You could have them looking for the Staff of Azuth. It was used to "Murder" Mystra. It held the Essence of Azuth IIRC, so maybe Mystra is trapped in it, and thats why the Weave went bonkers. She couldn't reconstitue. I hope that helps. |
| #3upsetfrfanAug 30, 2009 19:12:20 | Thanks 38delta, but my question was about whether any canonical source exists on the topic. It is strange that one of the most well-organised and powerful faiths have simply disappeared. What happened to them during and after the spellplague, what did they do afterwards? Did WotC publish any material on this topic? There is published material on the cult of Entropy, on Iyatchu Xvim after Bane's death, on the cult and resurrection of Orcus, on Crown of Horns related stuff for Mrykul, on the Cult of Dragon, on Finder's priests, etc. So FR cannon is full of cults of supposedly and truely dead deities, but I have not seen any published material on Mystra/Azuth/Savras after their death at the hands of Cyric/Shar. Is there anything cannon and if so where? Or do we know of any novels/books being written or planned? |

People who follow the 4E setting will probably know more. A few months ago, I suggested one such remnant organization forged after the Spellplague. Others on this forum took the idea and developed it further, but the thread faded not long after. It's not official, but perhaps it might be useful for your game. Here is the thread with the idea: The council of Magisters. community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/758...

There doesn't appear to be any lore on cults of those three. I'm not too sure the designers want to give those three a spotlight in 4E, since their deaths still evoke vastly different responses, ranging from ecstasy to wrath. There's been mention of individual faithful who continued to worship, such as that one mage in Mistshore who revered Mystra though he knew she died. But nothing in the lines of a major cult. I think the designers have taken the position that, of those faithful who weren't slain by the magical backlash, the vast majority converted, or refused to take a new patron but didn't gather together. |
| #6ShroomyAug 30, 2009 21:15:17 | The recent Dragon article on the domains of FR and Eberron deities included a sidebar about worshipping dead gods. Nothing specific was mentioned (it basically states check with your DM), but the idea is not completely eliminated from 4e. |
| #7BelorinAug 31, 2009 5:53:02 | It is said that 90% of the spellcasters died or went mad when the Spellplague struck and as many of Mystra's and Azuth's clergy were arcane casters as well as divine, not many may have survived.

Personally, I think there would be more Clerics than Invokers. To me, the whole "the ritual, not the deity, seals the deal" set-up actually benefits dead-god cults, since all it takes is faith and knowledge on the behalf of cult leaders to breed a new generation of Clerics. But I agree that their cults might very well be primarily composed of Avengers, with few Paladins. An Invoker who worships the lost deities of magic would be interesting: Mystra, Azuth, Savras, Isis, Thoth, Set, and the like. |
