| #1siterockJun 21, 2009 14:04:53 | I plan to use Expedition to Undermountain, but I want to include some more city elements. I'm fairly new to DMing (2nd campaign, first time running Realms), and I'm not great at making up things. Usually I string several published adventures into a campaign. I'm willing to convert adventures from 2nd edition or whatever, but I need ideas about material to use. Thanks in advance! |

Waterdeep has lots of stuff to do because of the many factions with in it. Depends on whats the over all theme you want really. They have arcane schools/guilds, city armed forces, and lots of churches from both good and evil gods. Dont get me started on the guilds of mercenaries and thieves. So it mostly depends on what your looking for. |
| #3siterockJun 22, 2009 15:17:10 | Thanks for your reply! I do have the Waterdeep book, and you're right: there's lots of stuff in it. My problem is I'm not good at coming up with scenarios. One of the main characters in this campaign is a cleric of Selune, and there's also an elven bard who's devoted to Mystra. The Expedition to Undermountain module has run-ins with some Shar devotees I believe, so there's plenty of motivation there. The cleric is also interested in her character becoming a Harper. I'm just looking for ideas on incorporating these themes. I appreciate any ideas or help I can get! Just for completeness, I have a human urban ranger, halfling rogue, dwarven berzerker, and a deep gnome sorceror. Weird, right? I tried to talk the newb out of playing that race, but he insisted that he wouldn't be happy unless his character was "vile". You can see how he's going to stick out like a sore thumb around the elf and the cleric, but... |

Bard Adventure: Your bard is a member or friend to New Olamn and because they believe in staying true to the founding ideals of what the harpers used to be they work to bring back more then just the old ways. They want to expand their base so to speak and they seek to reclaim a part of the Citadel of the Bloody Hand. This action in turn may lead to the attention of The Harpers, The Tel Teukiira, or even The shadow theives. I leave it at that. Claric Adventure: Not only does shar have worshipers in undermountian but her temple is down there too. You could find out information leading to it and run into a group of harpers that were keeping tabs on their movements. If you work with the harpers they may allow you to join them. Other Adventure: A powerful and hidden force in waterdeep is banding the many elite in the city togather. Their influence has spread thru out the great city. Among their number are the likes of Ambassador Ethur Anszim, Muiral the Misshapen, Maaril the Dragon Mage, Malchior of Darkhold, Meleghost Starseer, Vanrak Moonstar, Sumer of Calimport, Gareth Cormaeril,Meritid Archneie, Teltaera, Amarune, Nylaersyn, and The Eye. This many powerful beings can not work togather without a even greater force bending them togather. Some serve by their own will while others seem to be forced to serve thru magic or other means. Some will seek only freedom while others power. The city of Waterdeep will be overthrown or even destroyed should this unknown force bring this powerful group and their forces to bear. That last one is just for epic and likely would be long and complex. You could pretty much destroy a few factions or turn members of the group against the others. Alot of room for interesting rping or tactics. To tell the truth I am not good at coming up with ideas but its better then nothing. Hope I helped and good luck |
| #5siterockJun 22, 2009 23:00:46 | Wow! Those ideas are perfect! I take it you've run a few Realms games, then? All of those are going to require some processing on my part, but you've definitely given me some directions to go in. Thank you very much! |

They would have to protect themselves from their enemies while staying within the boundaries of the "Code Legal" of Waterdeep. If they survive, they might have a good reputation with the city watch. They might then do some covert work for the City Watch or even a Magister. That could be parlayed into patronage by a noble family or trade guild. The sewers and Undermountain provide limitless danger and cool places for you, as DM, to locate the bad guys. The number of portals in Waterdeep allows you to put the party almost anywhere in the realms. Other adventure hooks: A temple or other organization (bard college, small magic school) needs a rare tome and the only known copy was in Halaster's library (The Librareaum??) in Undermountain. The party must enter and locate the tome and return with it. Perhaps it contains information on the antidote for a rare poison or a wizard needs it for spell research or the bards need it for the history of a recently discovered artifact. A noble family has a rebellious son or daughter who has taken up the life of an adventurer. They have gone missing in Undermountain. The party must locate and return (read: rescue) the dumb***** to his/her family. You can play this guy/gal as a real pain and drive your players crazy (the true joy of DM'ing I must say). Evidence of stange rituals have been found recently by memberes of the Plumbers and Cellarers Guild. Also, people have been disapperaing and a common clue is proximity to a sewer entrance. The party investigates and finds a strange cult operating in the sewers. The cult is actually a sect of monks who have come to defeat an ancient evil. The party could help them. Andy |
