#1 kainhighwind Nov 07, 2008 9:28:19	Okay, my character is still in development, but here's what I've got so far: Koren Arthanalas Half-Elf something, leaning towards Warlord... " My name is Koren, I am a half-elf. My mother is a Beautiful Moon Elf, while my father passed before I was born. Many say he had the face of a soldier, but the eyes of a saint. I know he was a great man though. He was the first human to ever be laid to rest among Myth Drannor's greatest elven heroes. While I've never left my land, I've been told by Purple Dragon's on patrol that he has a statue in his honor in Cormyr's Hall of Heroes (I know little of Cormyr, but they strike me as the type of town to have the sort of thing). I am told that during the days when Seiveril Miritar was still trying to keep Myth Drannor under control, my father was among the first squadron of Purple Dragons that Cormyr sent to assist. My father attained countless victories against the drow and Daemonfey, gaining many scars as he shielded his eladrin allies. When I hear others speak of him, I've never heard an unkind word, and is often seen as the "pinnacle of humanity". It was during one of the most horrendous battles of my home's retaking that truly earned him a place among the gods as a hero. While sealing a portal, a horrendous demon came out, slaughtering soldiers by the hundreds. My father took it upon himself to attack the demon, purposely taking demonic blast after demonic blast to protect his squadron. By chance, another squadron of Purple Dragons had arrived just in time to finish the battle that my father had lost and had overwhelmed the eladrin. The eladrin whom survived that battle say that as his body lie broken on the ground, he only smiled saying that he was happy to protect his allies and friends. Many believe that my father was instrumental in cementing the relationship between Myth Drannor and Cormyr. I have trained hard ever since I could walk, to follow in my father's footsteps and find allies worth protecting, while upholding every ideal that he held true to his heart. Some points: - I'm not sure what kind of personality he has. It's completely obvious he adores his father, but I'm not sure how to really play him. I'm going to probably use a polearm for him. But I'm not sure what neat little personality quirks to give him... I'm thinking he might be a romantic, but I'm not 100% sure how to play that well...
#2 Shiftkitty Nov 07, 2008 19:14:40	Ambrose Pierceheart. His shield shows a heart shape with a dagger plunged through the top of it. A man whose passion for life was comparable to the elven passion for nature and beauty. Drawn to the elven culture, he felt far more at home among the cool trees of the forest than he ever did in crude, crowded human settlements. His respect for elven culture earned him many friends among the fair folk, and he fought with valor and fury during an attack that nearly decimated on of their villages. Stationed in the area as a liason between the humans and the elves whose homes had been all but destroyed, he found himself constantly in contact with a Sun Elf maiden whose father had been a very respected community leader. He was killed in the battle, and his daughter was trying to fill his considerable shoes by acquiring the food, shelter, and medical aid her people needed so desperately. Ambrose, being the liason, found himself in her company more and more often, and soon it was for things other than his duty called for. They began to spend every day together, and his mastery of the elven tongue attracted her to him with an irresistable force. He requested to be stationed in the area permanently, and the two were wed according to the local traditions of lifebonding, in which the wrists of the betrothed are punctured and tied together, sharing their lifeblood for all time.

That's all we really know about him. Are you playing Koren or Koren's father? Try the Ten Minute Background (stickied at the top of the page) and work from there.

#8 Shiftkitty Nov 09, 2008 21:39:40	I couldn't get anything going with the 10min either, but I do browse it over for thought now and then even if I don't use it as intended. When I really don't want to think about a backstory (yours I did put some thought into), I use Paul Jaquay's "Central Casting Heroes of Legend". I think it's still available as a free download if you Google it. It could take you a lot longer than ten minutes, but it's very meaty, depending on how the die roll.

#10 elfstar Nov 13, 2008 15:46:51	I'll confess to a bit of suspicion towards those finding the TMB unusable. I accept that it doesn't flow as well as straight narration, but it is a lot better at showing the many facets of a character. What a lot of people don't realize, or attempt is taking a blowtorch to the template works wonders for your style of play, while still keeping things organized. For example, I found the memories section annoying to write and often redundant, and absolutely needed a mannerisms block. I'm not trying to persuade anybody, but there are other ways to use campaign tools than exactly as presented.

I like the character's bio, good stuff. An idea that came to me on how to play the character is to try to live up to the expectations of his fathers name. His father was a great hero and your trying to do everything possible not to tarnish that name. This could mean putting yourself in harms way all the time for your allies, taking huge risks for big rewards just for honor's sake, and injecting phrases like "what would my father do?" and shouting battle cries such as "For the glory (or honor) of Pierceheart!". Though that's just one example, I think it might put you on a good start as to how to RP the character. As for game mechanics, being a warlord you could take exploits that redirect damage from your friends unto yourself as well as battlefield control. It'll give your character a sense of leadership and command with your allies and I'd suggest taking the Purple Dragon paragon path or one from the PH that might represend your style of play such as Knight Commander.
