This my first attempt to write a background for my drow rogue for this LFR campaign I'm getting ready to start playing. I've been brainstorming a couple of things but I don't have much. I wanted to share with you guys what I have and see what you think.

His name is Sh'darr Logoth and I'm kind of making his background along the same lines as Jarlaxle....well sort of. His alignment is unaligned but he definitely isn't a good guy. He's from the Underdark(of course) and he was raised as an assassin of Lolth. Though he proved himself time and time again to the Matron Mothers. He started to grow tired of Lolth and of living under the thumb of the this matriarchal society. No matter what he did, he constantly felt like a slave and he was tired of not getting what he knew he deserved. Sh'darr wanted wealth and wanted to be able to do as he pleases and answer to no one but himself. His mother constantly aided in keeping this from happening. As the only lowly male in the whole house, the greater rewards were always given to his sisters and over time the his hatred grew and grew. He despised his mother. Something had to be done. One night he sprang up out of bid as if an invisible force had made it so. He grabbed the only friend he had, his trusty dagger. He quietly headed to the quarters where his mother slept. He stealthly entered and all his rage exploded as he plunged his dagger straight threw her heart as he muffled her screams with his other hand. She faded and passed into the night. A smile came across Sh'darr's face, a twisted grin full of excitment. He immediately packed his equipment up and snuck out of the compound and headed out into the night. The surface was his destination. He need to go where his skills could be put to the test; somewhere he could live by his rules alone. He'd had enough and with one last look at home, he sprinted off into the darkness. An evil laugh went with him........

Okay this is more or less what I got as far as brainstorming goes. It's pretty typical and probably not very realistic. I'm not trying to make him like Drizzt because he's not a good guy. Sh'darr is selfish and wants rewards and wealth without having to answer to anybody. Anyways any tips or suggestions would be great. Thanks for reading

I imagine he would have stealthily dispatched the Matron's guards as well. I see no problem with your background as is, but if you Google "Central Casting Heroes of Legend", you should find that book as a free download. The guy whp put it up believes it's in the public domain, but as he admits he may be wrong, you should grab it before someone corrects him. You can roll up a background (and they can vary from simple to wildly elaborate), or you can pick and choose from the various charts. Collectors are selling these books for anywhere from 65-80 bucks.

One rogue PC I wrote up a past for using this system is the inheritor of numerous businesses and estates throughout the lands. The problem is that the people who left him all this property died under mysterious circumstances. He is believed to be the killer, and he doesn't dare show his face around these places that he owns because the locals will lynch him in a heartbeat.

That was one of the less elaborate ones. I was making a backstory for an NPC farmer who helped the party out a lot. I thought I'd just sprinlke in a bit of color. The dice made him out to be a retired solo adventurer who made Indiana Jones look like a piker. There were countless adventure hooks built into this guy, including a cult that was still after his hide. Took me almost my whole shift (I was donig graveshift security work) to write this guy up!

-Critique:

  • Why was he not content with his life as a male, like other males are? From birth, Drow males are shown their place. While most don't like it, very few actually do anything about it. Why did this individual do something about it?

  • Were it to easy to kill a Drow Matron Mother, there'd be a lot more homicide going on. Why was it so simple? How was the character able to sneak into her room? Why were there no wards?

  • Why did the character leave for the surface? Drow are taught that the surface is more or less a living hell. Other settlements, or even the wilds of the Underdark itself are more sensible places to flee.
