| #4Mr_MiscellanyJul 25, 2011 10:36:44 | This caught my eye: Helm’s Hold: This monastic community with a village of stout-hearted people hides terrible and terrifying threats to the region. I like the idea of Helmites guarding something terrible or perhaps containing some dread threat to the region around Neverwinter, because that's exactly what I did for my current Realms campaign (set in Cormyr). To me, Helmites have always been defenders, so I like the idea of them being Guardians of Terrible Things as well. Curious to see exactly what Helm's Hold is all about. |
| #5sfdragonJul 25, 2011 13:48:00 | PRAISE HELM!!!! |
| #6StiggerJul 25, 2011 15:13:23 | Would be interesting if it were like Watcher's Keep from BG2-ToB actually... that was one of my favorite parts from that game. |
| #7Plaguescarred1Jul 25, 2011 19:37:36 | I remember Helm's Hold back in The North supplement. Isn't this an Abbey to Helm shaped like a Helmet ? I vaguely recall some black & white artwork depicting it like a Helm...can't remember where. I want Helm back ! Helm's Hold: This abbey was founded 20 years ago by a retired member of the Company of Crazed Venturers. Starting as a single farm known as Helm's Stead, it.s grown over the years, with its main buildings fortified in 1353 DR against bandit and monster attacks. It.s now a thriving and self-sufficient farming and religious community of over 700 members who grow their own food, herd livestock, and diligently patrol a small section of the Neverwinter Wood. There.s one small building in the monastery's walls set aside for travelers seeking shelter and aid. |
| #8sfdragonJul 25, 2011 22:53:50 | I also want Helm back maybe ERik, the nice guy he is; will do it for us |
| #9StiggerJul 26, 2011 7:38:24 | No, Helm's Hold is the place that started out as a fortified farm, grew into a small keep, and which was founded by Dumal Erard of the Company of the Crazed Venturers. You're thinking of The High Helm, an inn/tavern/festhall in Juniril (Cormyr), which wasn't actually associated with Helm, but which did have the ruins of a temple to Helm in it, Helm's Everpresent Shield. |

Not to be too cynical, but in 4E they're probably guarding a gate to the Far Realms. It probably spits out Chtulhu-esque blobby things every so often. And without the backing of Helm and his power, it's a losing battle to keep things contained. They're probably also going slowly mad, one by one. Some of them may cry out, "it's the end of the world!" in bloodcurdling screams in the middle of the night. That's my guess. |
| #11Mr_MiscellanyJul 26, 2011 14:45:08 | Good point. Not everything in the Realms should have to do with Aboleths, Shade, Thay or Primordials. Which leads to a question for Erik: will Neverwinter feature unique threats outside of the big four or five power groups in the Realms (that's a ballpark number)? |
| #12StiggerJul 26, 2011 15:36:33 | That hadn't occurred to me, but it wouldn't surprise me much either... gods but I'm sick of the Far Realms and their HP Lovecraft rip-offs finding their way into everything. |

I'm thinking John Carpenter's The Thing meets the Realms and only the vigilant ones of Helm can hold it back. But I don't think Helm is fully gone, or Shadowbane wouldn't have the powers he does (granted by another deity, maybe). That being said, I'm quite certain a few Helmites might still hold on to divine powers that help hold the abberant creatures at bay. Imagin the sort of adventure where the PCs go to help the over-whelmed soldiers of Helm's Hold, only to be fighting a creature that takes the appearance of the Helmite defenders (and possibly a PC). It'd still have to be cold (like a deep winter) for the adventure to set the mood of a desolate area. I'm liking it.... |
| #16eriksdbJul 27, 2011 22:47:30 | Threats outside of the big groups: Yes. The Ashmadai are an example of that, and there are quite a few more. Lots and lots of threats, some of them not clear-cut. ![]() Not to be too cynical, but in 4E they're probably guarding a gate to the Far Realms. Thank the gods we didn't do that. (Though of course if you DO like that concept, feel free to include it in your game.) Though there is some madness involved. And Helm, of course. Cheers |

No, the "Far Realms" isn't something I'd ever include in my Realms. So I'm honestly very glad to hear that I was wrong about this. And if it turns out that Helm might make a real comeback, that would make me even happier. |
| #18eriksdbJul 27, 2011 23:36:21 | JH, I am definitely working on the Helm angle. That's what's going on with my character Shadowbane, after all; a ceaseless guardian with a god's own sword. Keep the faith and stay to your appointed watch. The hour draws closer. (And any particular fans of Helm should certainly pay particular attention to the last few chapters of my forthcoming novel, SHADOWBANE, out this fall! It's a doozy of an ending.) Cheers |
| #19sfdragonJul 27, 2011 23:38:59 | will the phrase " NEVER BETRAY YOUR TRUST" be booming??? or Greetings Realms, I'm back..... sorry had to point out the cliche's............ the top one was more fun to type |
| #20DoctorBadWolfJul 27, 2011 23:45:52 | Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! Gorramit Erik! Stop teasing me! :D It's probably a bit schizo that the two gods I most want back from the dead are Helm and Mask. I could almost see the two of them being like a Cavalier and a Rogue in an adventuring group, grudgingly respecting while having trouble putting up with one another, etc. You know, unless the players of the two characters are feeling disruptive. :P |

Even if it's a rampaging orc horde, my squee might only be on the inside. |
