| #1JudgeDookieOct 22, 2009 11:07:59 | Does anyone still play this? I was thinking about designing a module for it, but didn't know if it would be worth it. I figured, if I did, it would be more appreciated by the folks here than simple gamers. |
| #2suin_bahhar_02Oct 22, 2009 11:43:40 | I did play the original NWN on the City of Arabel PW server occasionally. Before I had to sack my old PC due to lack of OS updates and take a half year long break.
About to take a look at it again soon though.
There sure are some great modules you'll have to compete with. The Alazander series, The Siege of Myth Drannor and several other fan made modules had excellent quality, surpassing the original campaigns from the disks. |
| #3JudgeDookieOct 22, 2009 11:58:50 | Trust me, I know. But, if I was to do one, it wouldn't be twinkie. I would definitely try to be on par with Shadowlords--though, getting on par with Adam would be tough.
I just got a thing for programming, FR, and storytelling. Figure that is the best way to combine them all. |
| #4sfdragonOct 22, 2009 12:55:41 | I have nwn2 currently onmy hard drive, but nwn1.
but that can change |
| #5StiggerOct 22, 2009 15:02:19 | Meh, they both pale in comparison to Batman: Arkham Asylum...
Though Mask of the Betrayer was really quite good... Storm of Zehir not so much. At its worst though, NWN2 was still better than NWN1's best. |
| #6The_SilverswordOct 22, 2009 16:16:47 | I am currently playing NWN 1. Cant get 2 to work. I guess i need to upgrade my video card. Really sux, I paid like a grand for a new computer and it wont even play a game thats like 4 years old? |
| #7IluvrienOct 22, 2009 18:07:08 | I loved NWN1 too, haven't gotten around to doing 2 yet. I did however enjoy creating modules myself. I am not a bad coder, I just found I had some nice ideas but couldn't write natural sounding dialogue for the life of me. I had always wondered how good it would have been had I teamed up with someone more discursively gifted. |

Always gotta have a one-upper in the pocket, huh?
Though, I agree with the latter sentiment--believe the animated dialogue is what really did it.

It's not that you paid a grand, but what you bought with it. I made sure I paid that extra $400 for that graphics card. Can't play NWN without one.

Oh are you indeed. Well in that case I shall have to look towards digging out some of those projects and seeing where I was with them. |
| #11DiffanOct 23, 2009 8:16:27 | I did read somewhere that there was a new Prestige class for the original NWN game, the Purple Dragon Knight. Though I don't know if it can only be used in that mod or not. I switched to NWN2 but only got up to the part where you have to team up with the evil ranger. As a paladin, I so wanna smite that SoB.
So in anycase, is there a reason I should go back to NWN1? |
| #12StiggerOct 23, 2009 14:18:11 | Bah, you can easily get by running NWN2 with a $150 card, running it at high quality. The 512mb Radeon 2600 XT can run anything I've tossed at it so far without many problems. Though I agree, you really need to avoid onboard anything. That and learn how to shutdown background apps via task manager... that's the biggie mistake from what I can see. Just that will turn a game that should and could run well into a laggy pile o' pooh that isn't worth the plastic the disc is made out of.
As to NWN1... my biggest gripe with it over NWN2 is the whole mouse-camera control thing NWN2 does so well. Sure you can do it with keyboard commands in NWN1, its just much easier with NWN2. That's after you modify the nwn2player.ini so that the camera isn't slamming all over the place of course anyway. |

Patch 1.69 makes the PDK available as part of the main game. Though very few modules I've seen make use of horse-riding, and several of those that do (the superb Bastard of Kosigan series, f.ex) use the already existing rideable horses hak. So mostly the answer is that the PDK can be used with any mod compatible with 1.69, but the amount of use you'll get from it is limited.
I would say it's worth having NWN1 around. Lots of really good mods for it, though given the time it's been out that's not a surprise. I think that the average NWN2 mod is better than the average NWN1 mod, but that there are enough excellent ones for NWN1 that this doesn't really matter. Just avoid the piles of dross. |

Yeah, that's what I have--the 512 ATI. Find it works well with everything. Though, having 4 Gig's of RAM can assist as well. I see no reason why you should have to stop any background processes for the game to work. If you have to do that, then you need a new computer.
And I never toggle camera modes, so I can't say much on your point there.

I still have to finish the NWN2 premium mods, so I haven't dived into anything fan based. Is it just the experience of the people creating them or is the new toolkit that much better? |
| #16StiggerOct 27, 2009 10:53:23 | I have 4 gigs of RAM myself actually... and I don't usually have to turn off those backgrounds, its just habit by now from when I had a much crappier computer. There is a noticeable difference in load times for me though, so it does help quite a bit anyway. That and I got sick of HP or Creative or Whoever Update popping up in the middle of a fight reminding me its time to look for new updates... |
| #17IluvrienOct 27, 2009 16:51:49 | I'd be interested in hearing about them.
So far I seem to have found two projects I was working on. One was an attempt at an adaptive mod, in that the player started as a child character (in a village near Silverymoon I think) and their abilities and story was developed as a consequence of the missions and choices they made (mostly rp) during the first chapter. The second picked up with the character actually having a class now and moving off into the world (shaped by previous decisions) I remember the coding was sticky but it was an enjoyable project.
The second project was a Magic-user focused mod that also had multiple chapters. The first started based in a Wizard/Sorcerer Academy and rotated around the politics of survival as a young magic user. The second was a move from Academy to day-release into the local community to accomplish larger tasks, the third was a move to another city as a sanctioned Mage and the final stage was to create a new watchpost (your tower) and defend it against a rising horde.
As you can tell... they weren't small projects, and without the ability to write strong dialogue I was left with mostly just the coding and building. Ah well. |

Yeah. I can see your point on that. For me it was Norton Antivirus popping up all the time. Nothing sux worse that being surrounded by a mob of Orcs--half dead--and having some dialogue box pop up and block the view of your own death.

I think both concepts are kick ass--though I tend to lean to the former in preference. The idea of truly molding a characters personality from childhood is an appealing concept to many I believe. And the fact that they can walk into an alignment they didn't expect is an added bonus.
I'm big on chapters as well--needs to be a story. Though, I'm big on chapter (mod) installments personally. It allows you to incorporate new tricks you learn as you go along and keeps the PC waiting for more. Is that what you were talking about?
Either way, they both sound sweet. Let me know if you are up for pursuing them. They sound promising. |

That was a major idea behind the development. To allow real immersion into the story and the Realms I wanted the growth to have an organic quality that initial character generation just didn't have (for me) and I hoped it would instill a greater feeling of "owning" the character this way... as well as introducing as much setting and narrtive material as I could.

That is indeed what I was talking about. Entirely seperate mods for each chapter using a character import from the previous chapter to the next.

I may well be pursuing them although they may need a fair amount of work before I start showing them to people. I have had a look at the scripting and although it isn't bad, I am a better coder now than I was then. I will take another look at some of this stuff and then maybe get back to you. |

Indeed. You have it perfectly correct.

Sweet! We are on the same page with that one.

Fine. Maybe.
Well, if you want to pursue, then PM me. I'm not up for sharing secrets either. |
| #24IluvrienOct 29, 2009 20:11:17 | Well, if you want to pursue, then PM me. I'm not up for sharing secrets either.
It isn't about sharing secrets or not. It is the fact that I looked at some of the coding and went "dear holy Mystra this is terrible." Now it will cost time and energy to fix that, neither which I have great excesses of. So the "maybe" isn't about getting you involved, it is about me continuing at all. |
| #25JudgeDookieOct 29, 2009 20:34:29 | Well, lucky for you, I tend to love the coding bit. As stated, programming and storytelling are a couple things I love. I'm gonna have to do this on my own at some point, but I dig your concepts.
Just sayin'.... |
| #26The_SilverswordOct 30, 2009 11:06:16 | I was just playing NWN 1 and I just got a fen berry. Ive never even heard of that, is that something from established lore or is it something made up just for the game? Whats a fen berry good for any way? |
| #27_jayne_cobb_Oct 30, 2009 11:15:39 | A couple days ago I was in HMV and found a bin of heavily discounted PC software. Among the dregs was a copy of Neverinter Nights 2, which I scooped up for $4.99.
Now I was not a fan of the original. I tried playing through it on three separate occasions but it was just so damned bog-awful - not to mention fugly as all get-out - so I eventually gave up and let it gather dust. NWN2 on the other hand is far more attractive and, so far, just an all-around better game in every way (despite still being hampered by it's movement interface).
Since I will be investing some time in it, and I am a sucker for DIY content and construction tools, I had a couple questions:
Does anyone know of some good modules to download?
Does anyone know of a good guide/ manual/tutorial for the editor?
Unrelated to module creation, a couple more questions:
Why do all low-rent voice actors feels the need to adopt atrocious faux-British accents when dubbing fantasy games?
Why does the one guy in the second tutorial cinematic who doesn't affect a bad faux-British accent sound instead like a bad Elvis impersonator?
Why do VO directors all seem to think that "13 year old mallrat girl" is what a rogue should sound like? Neeshka is a fraking tiefling and she still sounds like she's going to take off to meet her firends at the food court at any moment. See also Imoen in "Baldur's Gate" and Lidda in the "Scourge of Worlds" interactive DVD.
I have recently found myself at something of an impasse as my core campaign seems to have vanished. I imagine a reinstall is needed, but I've simply not had the time to do it yet. Man is that game buggy! |
| #28ZireaelOct 30, 2009 12:22:19 | Try nwvault for both modules and the tutorial. Warning: the editor can be a piece of irritating .... Can't get it to work properly for my life.
Good modules:
Llothanchwi
Pool of Radiance remastered
A Hunt Through the Dark remastered |

| #30JudgeDookieOct 31, 2009 4:24:03 | Well, that was a bit more than a couple questions, bud...
Lucky we don't charge 99 cents a minute to answer them.
Yet.
Zireael has it right. The neverwintervault has pretty much everything you need. Just remember that the majority of it is fan created, so sometimes the people who made it need to be tutored in tutorials.
BTW, Shadowlords by Adam Baker still remains one of my favorite modules. |
| #31Isildrae_KyussNov 01, 2009 18:08:47 | Great game that still has a good community. If you made a module, I'd most probably try it out. I spent many hours RPing on the PWs of NWN. |

Just tryin to catch up to you.
But obviously I give a **** about Fenberries.
Do they have a use in game? were they just made up for the game or do they exist in established Realmslore?
|
| #35IluvrienNov 01, 2009 19:12:28 | I have decided that I am going to continue production on the modules I described. Well, at least the first one. The one in the village near Silverymoon. I am however going to rip the script-guts out of about half of it and make it work. Better. In a quite surreal fashion I, at one point, thought it a good idea to script daily routines that would have all of the village inhabitants walking around to their assigned tasks. Quite, quite insane. |
| #36sfdragonNov 01, 2009 21:48:59 | use prefabs when possible.... there was this treetop village mod somewhere on the vualt too |
| #37StiggerNov 02, 2009 9:06:06 | Fenberries don't much matter at all unless you're a wizard. You can use them to create magical items in Eltoora's lab, both chapters 2 & 4 I believe, and you can use them as a reagent to trade with her in chapter 2 to get her to open her shop up to you. As to their place in Realmslore, I've never seen them mentioned outside of the games. Not to say they aren't there, but if they are, I'm not aware of it.
As to NWN2's toolset, I preferred it greatly to NWN1's myself. In regards to good modules for NWN2... I didn't like most of the ones I tried, so I gave up on them after a while. Probably why I never put anything I worked on out there... I couldn't abide most of the highly rated stuff, so I didn't really see the point in submitting something if my tastes ran that contrary. |
| #38IluvrienNov 02, 2009 9:25:19 | I have yet to pick up NWN2. I really should do though.
I just spent the last 24 hours wondering why all the geographical references in my plots were feeling weird to me... and that would be because the mod is actually set nowhere near Silverymoon and the Silver Marches... it is a damn sight further south, between the Marsh Chelimber and the Greycloak Hills. Evereska, not Silverymoon! |
| #39StiggerNov 02, 2009 9:30:50 | That could make it a little difficult to make a mod centered on Silverymoon then... |
| #40IluvrienNov 02, 2009 9:35:53 | Well the first chapter mod, the "child" section of the whole story, is about the player effectively making their way through the village towards the city (Evereska in this case) rather than being in it. This is the mod that was planned and coded and as such it doesn't feature even the outskirts of the city itself (yet... that was part 2). Still, maybe a later chapter could move there, depends how long it takes before I go stark staring crazy at the limitations of the development system again. |
| #41The_SilverswordNov 02, 2009 11:05:05 |

Thank you so much for the reply Stigger! It was driving me mad! I was just sittin there thinkin Fen berry? what the hey is a Fenberry? I didnt know if I should keep them fenberries or sell them or bother getting more or what. Ive never heard of them either in any other Realmslore so Im guessing theyre made up for the game as well.
So I wonder if Fenberry Wine is any good? |
| #42StiggerNov 02, 2009 11:11:47 | They aren't worth much, so I wouldn't really bother even picking them up to be honest... not unless you have a lot of bags of holding to stick them into, and even then, they're still a waste of space. |

Just tryin to catch up to you.
Won't be hard. Besides, I've been forced to post under a few different alias's while banned on this one, so you will never truly know when that time comes.
In the end, it comes down to how long you have actually been around and what you contribute to the board. This number of posts stuff, I find absolutely retarded--especially when they are so concerned with people posting on topic.

Good to go, man--let me know if you would like my assistance.
As for the villagers thing, I can see both your points.
On the first, that would be me: make sure the PC isn't surrounded by mindless AI drones and have things appear as real as normal. As well as interact with them as normal as possible.
On the second, it wouldn't be as insane as you think--but it would take some time thinking about it. Overall, you would just need to create an array with enough elements to dictate what everyone in the village is doing at any said time.
Still, maybe a later chapter could move there, depends how long it takes before I go stark staring crazy at the limitations of the development system again.
The entire game is based on a single language--the toolkit offers only the most basic of the functions possible. Anything you want to be done can be found or figured out. |

Right I hear ya, I could really care less about post count, its all about content. I only chime in if I think I have something to add to the conversation or if some one asks a question ill do my best to answer it, sometimes I suppose i might get carried away playing a game of post tag, but I try to keep that out of any threads with a serious discussion goin on.

thats why the name of the game is "on topic spam" The_silversword.......
anyway if said module is for nwn1, then I'm going to have to reinstall it. right after Dragon Age: ORigins
Hey youre my bud, you dont have to call me The Siversword. Just Silversword. Everybody else, its The Silversword, actually Mr. The Silversword.
And Im hopin it is for NWN 1, I can get that one to work on my system.
Ok Siversword it is. I hear by christen thee The Siversword.
No I didn't change his post, just bolded it...
Damn!! foiled by crappy typemanship once again!
|
| #59sfdragonNov 03, 2009 3:26:33 | you know I caught that in my post, and edited my spelling...
|
| #60StiggerNov 03, 2009 5:17:06 | Ugh. Here I was hoping I had escaped LK... damned elf-loving weirdo freakball that he is. Oh well, guess the Ebola option is back on the table. |
| #61JudgeDookieNov 03, 2009 23:32:53 | Just picture him as a kitty, my man, and do your worst. |
| #62sfdragonNov 04, 2009 4:52:21 | shaken kity syndrome?? |
| #63StiggerNov 04, 2009 7:25:40 | Prefer them swung and tossed against walls or drowned myself... particularly when they're polymorphed mages... |
| #64JudgeDookieNov 04, 2009 14:22:12 | As we know, I was always partial to you curb stomping on their skulls. |

Only if you tell us who "Silver" is and why his word is so important. |
| #66JudgeDookieNov 04, 2009 15:22:17 | It's not. Trust me. I checked into it and nothin' this kid says is valid. |

Sliversword is a well known noble house having strong elven ties dating back to the very beginings of the Empire!

Hey! Ive had a few moments of validity!
But any way back on topic, are these modules you all are talking about for NWN 1 or 2? |
| #68JudgeDookieNov 04, 2009 15:25:24 | Both--at this point. |
| #69StiggerNov 04, 2009 16:40:00 |
Sliversword is a well known Ignoble house having strong elven Lies dating back to the very beginings of the (thankfully collapsed) Empire!
Fixed that for you... |
| #70JudgeDookieNov 04, 2009 17:02:23 | Suh-wheat! |

| #72sfdragonNov 05, 2009 0:42:32 | oh good grief.

|
| #73StiggerNov 05, 2009 7:42:30 | And here I was hoping for a snappy comeback of some sort... good grief, just a little effort people. |
| #74IluvrienNov 05, 2009 8:14:07 | Whereas I, having realised that my NPC and location lists have gone walkabout, have been trying to rebuild them from (pretty much) nothing except from what has already been coded.
Finally think I have my head around them, though. Now I just need to look at what plots I have going on and decide what I am keeping and what I am dumping before I start throwing sections at Dookie to do the writing for ;). |

This is Silversword, my man. What you want?

Good to go, butch. Just remember that I'll have to dry run the mod and get a peek at your code. Being the ass that I am, I'll probably come back with more work for you.
Which reminds me, does anyone know if you can run the NWN1 toolset and the NWN2 toolset on the same system without complications? |
| #76StiggerNov 06, 2009 4:47:51 | Never gave me any difficulty when I tried it... never tried running both at the same time though, that might cause some problems given what resource hogs they both are... |
| #77JudgeDookieNov 06, 2009 22:05:51 | Good to go. Any idea how interchangeable the code is between the two? I haven't even looked at the NWN2 toolset yet. |
| #78StiggerNov 07, 2009 12:36:42 | Somewhat. Lilac's Script Generator worked for quite a bit of stuff in NWN2, though some things were handled pretty differently. No idea if her progs still around, but you might try looking for it on the Vault. |
| #79JudgeDookieNov 07, 2009 16:22:56 | Gracias.
Here--I bought you a taco! |
| #80StiggerNov 08, 2009 8:41:04 | I tend to prefer burritos myself... or tostadas even better. Hmmm... should cook some of those up for dinner tonight come to think of it. |
| #81JudgeDookieNov 08, 2009 23:18:06 | Fine. I'll keep that in mind, but my taco's are the ****in' bomb!!!

|
| #82The_SilverswordNov 09, 2009 2:40:58 | Tacos? did somebody say tacos? I love Tacos! |
| #83Doombringer_of_HoarNov 09, 2009 2:48:42 | Do they even have tacos in the Forgotten Realms? |
| #84StiggerNov 09, 2009 6:05:03 | Now that's a burning question for Ed... and probably covered by a NDA for some unfathomable reason. |
| #85JudgeDookieNov 09, 2009 10:22:44 |
Do they even have tacos in the Forgotten Realms?
Only in Abier these days. Tacos left with Maztica.
Though, I still remind you that turning to Bejebuz with give you all the tacos you desire.

|
| #86sfdragonNov 09, 2009 14:46:17 | he dosnt grant Jack Daniels though |
| #87JudgeDookieNov 09, 2009 22:00:13 | Yes, he does. And if it wasn't for Myrtl, I'd still have it. |
| #8818DELTANov 09, 2009 22:41:59 | Who's that in best Merrick voice... |
| #89JudgeDookieNov 10, 2009 0:31:22 | MK hasn't stuck around in ages. Renind me. |
| #90StiggerNov 10, 2009 0:41:16 | He occassionally pops in and does a drive by posting or two though... before fading off to find out what evil lurks in the hearts of men, and then getting himself in on the act. |
| #91sfdragonNov 10, 2009 1:18:14 |
Yes, he does. And if it wasn't for Myrtl, I'd still have it.
but its one or the other with him, and not both, so I stick with Helm..... |
| #92JudgeDookieNov 10, 2009 9:59:31 | Well, then, you can just stick it. You have no idea of the zesty, spicy power that is Bejebuz!! |
| #93StiggerNov 11, 2009 0:24:52 | Or, alternately, he believes theres more to like than spicy food... as would most sane people. |
| #94JudgeDookieNov 11, 2009 0:34:37 | Eh. You've been disillusioned since we met. |
| #95StiggerNov 11, 2009 0:45:34 | Or just not lame enough to worship tacos... |
| #96JudgeDookieNov 11, 2009 0:52:11 | Anyone who worships himself above Bejebuz is lame, buddy. |
| #97StiggerNov 11, 2009 0:55:50 | I don't worship Me, that's what you Peons are for... geez, get it straight. |
| #98JudgeDookieNov 13, 2009 21:41:26 | Not having much luck with at, huh? |
| #99The_SilverswordNov 13, 2009 21:56:08 | Not having much luck with at, huh?
Holy **** Batman! Youre back! I kinda miss the angry taco dude.

| #100JudgeDookieNov 13, 2009 22:28:30 | Yeah. Again, the 24 hour ban lasted longer than stated. What do you expect with me though?
I'll assume you got my PM? |

| #104JudgeDookieNov 14, 2009 2:23:23 | Whispering sweet nothings again?
Better than whispering conspiracy proofs and not applying the evidence.
|
| #105StiggerNov 14, 2009 4:19:34 | Yep, catcher... |
| #10618DELTANov 14, 2009 4:31:28 | Without the or the reach around... |
