| #1skullport_denizenAug 02, 2008 10:12:49 | Well with there still three weeks until the new Forgotten Realms book comes out and I have two weeks before I start a 4e game in the realms I was wondering about opinions of where to place the campaign. I want to find a nice secluded area where they won't wondere far. MAybe Ten Towns, or Chult, Moonshae, etc. Do you guys, with your infinite wisdom on the realms have any good idea on a region that would be ideal to help me keep my guys from trapsing off to the big city everytime they feel froggy. Thanks. |
| #2lord_karsusAug 02, 2008 12:53:18 | -Two things: (A) A lot of the world is changing, and some places will be changing that we haven't heard about, yet. So, any information made between now and when the FRCG is released might be wrong, once the book is released. (B) What kind of campaign are you interested in? One in a jungle? On in the arctic? One on the open seas? In a desert? With Drow? What? |
| #3skullport_denizenAug 02, 2008 13:14:34 | I am thinking simple. Really climate location isn't the key. I am looking for a place that would be hard to get away from for a while without putting them in bondage or servitude to someone. So an Island adventure might be interesting, and then I was thinking that if they were stuck in the north lands and couldn't travel out because of the weather that woud be interesting as well. Has anyone thought of doing a shipwreck sort of adventure. That would be something interesting to do. What do you think about that. Island in the middle of nowhere. Kind of Lost like but, maybe not as mysterious. I actually like that idea. Any suggestions for location. I have heard that 4e FR was revamped a lot and trying to research it. Not much to go on until the book comes out. Anyway, thanks for the info. |
| #4colmanAug 02, 2008 14:32:17 | Chult - see the preview they released and the thread in the other forum. The Jungles of Chult 1e accessory is available for a couple of dollars as a PDF for background. I'm sure people here would be happy to throw ideas for bringing it into 4e around the place. |
| #5lord_karsusAug 02, 2008 14:47:42 | Really climate location isn't the key. -Sure it is. Even if, say, a desert is the idea location to base the campaign in, if you don't like running such adventures, in such places, I'd advise against it. Has anyone thought of doing a shipwreck sort of adventure. That would be something interesting to do. -I've done that before, albeit on a fairly small island, and with the intent that the PCs be rescued within a few days. "Crash landing" them on an island would work, but keep in mind a few things: 1) The PCs, knowing their predicament, are going to dedicate their resources to escaping. In Gilligan's Island, even though they were stuck on that island for however long, they were always trying to figure out ways to get off. 2) You're going to have to fill the island with enough things to keep your PCs busy. This includes, a history, dungeons, monsters, hidden plots, and all of that stuff. I have heard that 4e FR was revamped a lot and trying to research it. Not much to go on until the book comes out. Anyway, thanks for the info. -In the meantime, you can check out the 4e Changes FAQ thread, maintained by MarkusTay. |
| #6rinonalyrna_fathomlinAug 04, 2008 12:30:20 | Chult came to mind as an "island in the middle of nowhere" (in 4E, anyway), but you could always make up your own island.![]() As LK said, there just isn't that much information on 4E adventuring locales in the Realms yet. |
| #7skullport_denizenAug 04, 2008 12:59:12 | Yeah, I am impatiently waiting for the new book to come out. I think I have come to the conclusion that I am going to put it in either a town in Icewind Dale area, or I am going to put it on the new Island of Chult. I know pretty much what characters the players are going to make. This is what I have heard so far. Eladrin Wizard Human Rogue Elf Wizard or Halfling Ranger Dragonborn Ranger or Fighter I have no real info on the names of the towns in Icewind Dale. I could make one up, but If someone has the names that would be great. I do have to Chult info that was on the site so I can go by that. Anyway, I haven't figured completely what I am going to do. I need a couple of seed thoughts to go by. I wrote up a little bit for starter info for if I do it in Icewind Dale. Anyway thanks, The FAQ is good stuff. |
| #8skullport_denizenAug 05, 2008 15:00:37 | OK, It is settled I am going to start my 4e campaign in the country of Estagund. I have no real info from this except the snippet from the FRCS, so if anyone has info please share. I don't even know if the place still exsists in 4e. Oh well. Here goes nothing. Monster suggestions for the region. A good bothersome returning villian is always nice too. Anyhoo thanks a bunch. |
| #9lord_karsusAug 05, 2008 15:12:38 | don't even know if the place still exsists in -We don't either. No one does. Not yet. ;) |
| #10naexAug 05, 2008 15:33:47 | -Sure it is. Even if, say, a desert is the idea location to base the campaign in, if you don't like running such adventures, in such places, I'd advise against it. So, a Lost theme? I was thinking about that myself. |
| #11lord_karsusAug 05, 2008 15:35:05 | So, a Lost theme? I was thinking about that myself. -Never seen it. I know of it, but that's basically all. But, from what I know, it could definitely serve as a good basis of comparison for a similar D&D campaign, on a similar place. |
| #12naexAug 05, 2008 15:47:38 | -Never seen it. I know of it, but that's basically all. But, from what I know, it could definitely serve as a good basis of comparison for a similar D&D campaign, on a similar place. Definately worth watching for some really good ideas, I only started watching it about 2 weeks ago. There is a very supernatural undertone to the show that would work well in a magical world, just change the tech (and most of it doesn't work anyway) to magic and viola. |
| #13lord_karsusAug 05, 2008 15:51:17 | -Meh, I don't watch much TV. There's a very select few things I do watch, at very select times. For instance, I watch That 70's Show, but not from 5:00-6:00 PM, but instead from 12:00-1:00 AM, because the earlier episodes, I've seen most of them from that season. -Another idea, for a lost island (even if you aren't thinking of running something there), and would fit in kinda-sorta with Chult: King Kong. If you want to add in Chultan dinosaurs, you've got King Kong v. Godzilla. And, damn it, Godzilla should wipe the floor with that hairy monkey! |
| #14xhereticxAug 05, 2008 18:21:50 | I'd go with more of a Lost World or Stargate SG-1 concept myself (shows I haven't watched in a long time but still remember some things about:embarrass ). Have Port Nyranzaru be a sort of last bastion of civilization and from there emphasize the power of the unknown and turn Chult into almost a prehistoric alien world, combining dinosaurs, Yuan-Ti ruins and the like with Abeir influences slowly but surely making the place even weirder. |
| #15naexAug 05, 2008 19:13:15 | I'd go with more of a Lost World or Stargate SG-1 concept myself (shows I haven't watched in a long time but still remember some things about:embarrass ). I've always seen stargate more as a planescape or spelljammer type adventure, lots of world hopping. As for O.P... Until the FRCG is out, we have no idea what organizations are still active in which regions, so either go with a local type NPC of your own design or just have patience. Although I may try freezing myself for the next two weeks to avoid this interminable wait. |
| #16merrikcaleAug 06, 2008 22:32:55 | - If you want to add in Chultan dinosaurs, you've got King Kong v. Godzilla. And, damn it, Godzilla should wipe the floor with that hairy monkey! one of the great movies of all time Now thats one that needs a remake |
| #17lord_karsusAug 06, 2008 22:53:16 | one of the great movies of all time -Well, they made a Godzilla movie in 1998, and a King King movie in...2006? So, can a cross-over be far behind!? |
| #18merrikcaleAug 06, 2008 22:55:44 | -Well, they made a Godzilla movie in 1998, and a King King movie in...2006? So, can a cross-over be far behind!? did you ever see the original King Kong vs Godzilla? |
| #19BelorinAug 07, 2008 3:05:43 | Yes and a remake would be along time coming. Toho has put the big 'G' on hiatus till 2013-4. Also there is the huge size differential between the two, KK at 25 feet in the 2005 PJ film and Godzilla at 328 feet in 2005's Godzilla Final Wars. Yes, I am a G-fan. I currently own all 28 Godzilla films plus other kaiju films. The one part of Kara-tur I really liked was Gargantua Island. Bel |
| #20KhaeliethAug 07, 2008 4:00:57 | did you ever see the original King Kong vs Godzilla? Think they released 2; in Japan Godzilla won, and in the U.S. King Kong won. |
| #21merrikcaleAug 07, 2008 9:47:19 | Think they released 2; in Japan Godzilla won, and in the U.S. King Kong won. really? |
| #22GreenKnightAug 07, 2008 9:50:27 | Yep. Though I thought Godzilla should've won, period. He's way better than King Kong. |
| #23merrikcaleAug 07, 2008 9:59:52 | Godzilla should have been able to just torch his gorilla rump before Kong got anywhere near him |
| #24merrikcaleAug 07, 2008 10:03:01 | although I must say the recent remake of Kong was much better than the Godzilla remake with Broderick |
| #25BelorinAug 07, 2008 12:14:11 | Actually if you watch the '98 Godzilla and then watch the old '58 Giant Behemoth you see a better match-up as far as storyline. Make up your own organizations, Cult of the Kaiju (giant monster). Bel |
| #26skullport_denizenAug 07, 2008 15:29:14 | Uhhhh, How did we start talking about Godzilla and King Kong. And as much as I love the Godzilla movies when I was a kid now it is the cheesiest looking thing ever. Although so was Kung Fu theatre and I still love that. I think it has to do with the bad dubbing though. I was always a Kong fan over Godzilla. Big ape, big lizard. Its kind of like Kong beating up the T-Rexes in the recent film. The lizard has a big head and little arms. |
| #27merrikcaleAug 07, 2008 15:43:49 | Uhhhh, How did we start talking about Godzilla and King Kong. course, the T-Rexes can't breathe fire and bash up a Smog Monster |
| #28lord_karsusAug 07, 2008 16:34:15 | Uhhhh, How did we start talking about Godzilla and King Kong. -Chult is now an island (Skull Island). And, well...The Spellplague mutated a random lizard on Chult. Bam. ![]() |
| #29skullport_denizenAug 07, 2008 16:48:35 | -Chult is now an island (Skull Island). And, well...The Spellplague mutated a random lizard on Chult. Bam. Ahha, I knew there was an explanation. But what if all the islands inhabitants were mutated and the two Ports were now Forts, or better yet the cowering remnants of humanoids there are now crazy worshipers of the beasts. Sounds like King Kong to me. I think King Kong has a much better plot than Godzilla. Mutated lizard, overgrown Monkey. I think it should come down to the surrounding characters to make the monster. Anyone know the name of that Japanese superhero that grew big and fought Godzilla? |
| #30lord_karsusAug 07, 2008 17:30:14 | Ahha, I knew there was an explanation. But what if all the islands inhabitants were mutated and the two Ports were now Forts, or better yet the cowering remnants of humanoids there are now crazy worshipers of the beasts. Sounds like King Kong to me. -It could work. The Beast Cult (King Kong) and the Snake/Lizard Cult (Godzilla). |
| #31BelorinAug 07, 2008 18:24:30 | Ahha, I knew there was an explanation. But what if all the islands inhabitants were mutated and the two Ports were now Forts, or better yet the cowering remnants of humanoids there are now crazy worshipers of the beasts. Sounds like King Kong to me. Zone Fighter. The Chult preview also mentioned areas of carniverous plants and blood sucking vines, I could do a whole retro 50's scifi theme on the island like the Navy vs. the Night Monsters. Mobile carniverous plants attacking the ports under the command of an insane druid. Bel |
| #32lord_karsusAug 07, 2008 19:00:50 | ...the Navy vs. the Night Monsters. -Geeze, that sounds like a classic must-see. ;) |
| #33BelorinAug 08, 2008 1:00:44 | If only for a young Mamie Van Doren, otherwise it's 'B' grade all the way. I'm fond of throwing old fantasy/horror/scifi movie plots at my players, one of the reasons I like Ravenloft so much. Half the domains are recycled horror movie plots. Bel |
| #34lord_karsusAug 08, 2008 9:36:28 | -Well, that's Ravenloft for you. Dracula rules one part, there's some Wolfmen, some Gypsies... |
| #35BelorinAug 08, 2008 10:45:13 | Skullport Denizen, you might also try the Moonshae Isles, the political landscape is in upheaval. There is no High King, so there is only a bunch of small squabbling kingdoms facing a takeover bid from Amn, raids from the Northmen and an incursion of Fomorians from the Feywild. Bel |
| #36skullport_denizenAug 08, 2008 13:47:52 | I sent all of my players this little starting point for something for them to to think about for background. I figure they will make of it what they will. I have thought of the Moonshae Isles. I could use so much from there. And political intrigue in a troublesome kingdom could be fun. I wrote this for them while they were creating their characters. "You have spent the last three years of your life learning in a school for the over privilege. Some of you are the over privileged. Some of you have come here because your parents worked hard and long to let you learn in the best place. Some of you have been give a special aptitude and earned your way to come here. Choose which of these you are. For each of you there has been time outside of school learning more than book work. You may have learned to read and write with the best professors and read countless pages of dribble, or if you are a book worm wondrous works. But you have learned something that caught your eye as fascinating, the elegance of sword play, the ability to track creatures and animals, a way to weave magic from almost nothing, the sly effort of pick pocketing or how to hide and not be seen. The learning of these skills have gotten you through these last few years. You have graduated from your school of learning and now have a choice to make. Go home to mother and father, or start a new life and see where it takes you." |
| #37rinonalyrna_fathomlinAug 08, 2008 18:47:14 | Just one thing--I'm not sure if the PCs would like to be referred to as over-privileged. That implies that they are more privileged than they should be. Just say "privileged". |
| #38lord_karsusAug 08, 2008 21:13:25 | I wrote this for them while they were creating their characters. -What, exactly, is that for? |
| #39skullport_denizenAug 09, 2008 12:25:48 | -What, exactly, is that for? The statement or giving them the bakcground info? If the first not sure I just wrote it. I know to get use to character creation of 4e, and to start figuring out how some things work most of the players created several characters. Some created a character of every class to see what they liked the best. I just added the background fluff to give them a place to be and reason they already know each other. Some of them might not be friends but they know or know of the others. Not sure if that answers your question. I like the Moonshae Isles. It gives a place that is established, yet with turmoil. The nobles or such want to have outsiders but local folk might not like them. It could easily give over to an expedition to Chult later in the adventuring. As far as privileged or over-privileged. I meant that some might be that way or not. I guess just saying privileged gets the point accross though. |
| #40rinonalyrna_fathomlinAug 11, 2008 11:27:29 | As far as privileged or over-privileged. I meant that some might be that way or not. I guess just saying privileged gets the point accross though. Out of setting, saying they are over-privileged is fine. In setting, it makes less sense (to me anyway). ![]() |
| #41lord_karsusAug 11, 2008 12:28:45 | -Alright. Just wondering, because, I know, as a player, I like to create my own background story. I get very incensed when the DM tells me what my background story is. No, *I* tell *HIM* what my background story is. |
| #42skullport_denizenAug 11, 2008 19:14:46 | -Alright. Just wondering, because, I know, as a player, I like to create my own background story. I get very incensed when the DM tells me what my background story is. No, *I* tell *HIM* what my background story is. Very understandable. I encourage the players to make a background story. Some do and some don't So I gave them an option. I already had one player send me his background. i t has nothing to do with what I wrote, and I am fine with that. I like creativeness in characters. I usually reward them with something of rhte game when starting out. I decided on the Moonshaes to start off in and the rogue player gave a brief background of his life and what circumstances brought him there. Some like whne the DM gives them something to work with. |
| #43lord_karsusAug 11, 2008 21:51:15 | -Why people wouldn't want to create their own history, I'll never understand. I have a player like that, but I forced him to do it anyway. It's a very bare minimal thing, but it's better than nothing. |
| #44naexAug 14, 2008 2:04:44 | -Why people wouldn't want to create their own history, I'll never understand. I have a player like that, but I forced him to do it anyway. It's a very bare minimal thing, but it's better than nothing. Agreed... It helps a lot when players give you an idea about their characters. Helps develop plot hooks and goals for them. And it gets them more into the game, they have more of an investment if they have spent the time thinking about those aspects of their character. |
| #45lord_karsusAug 14, 2008 16:53:39 | Agreed... It helps a lot when players give you an idea about their characters. Helps develop plot hooks and goals for them. And it gets them more into the game, they have more of an investment if they have spent the time thinking about those aspects of their character. -Right. One player I have, she listed that her character was an orphan, and we are wrapping up the plot in which that character discovered who her parents were, found out what happened to them, and avenged their deaths. Now, we are slowly making our way to the Oriental section of my world, where the party Samurai has to return, due to the death of a relative in the family. Intrigue will ensue. -The other player who I have, who writes the bare minimum, I have no special stories to weave around his characters, and as such, they are missing out. |
| #46Arawn76Aug 17, 2008 14:56:45 | -Why people wouldn't want to create their own history, I'll never understand. I have a player like that, but I forced him to do it anyway. It's a very bare minimal thing, but it's better than nothing. I have to agree. I always insist that my players give me five (at least) seperate backround details. At first that was all I got (sometimes barely) till two of the players noticed the story focusing on the more interesting and detailed characters. :D Now it's a bit of a competition to see who can write up the more interesting back story, they can actually go a bit OTT. ![]() |
| #47lord_karsusAug 17, 2008 17:22:13 | :D Now it's a bit of a competition to see who can write up the more interesting back story, they can actually go a bit OTT. -Pshh...I wish I had that "problem". |
| #48naexAug 18, 2008 3:39:11 | I had one DM that wouldn't let us roll up characters, instead we had to write that characters backstory. He statted us and gave us classes based on those write ups. Not a great DM though, he also made you tell stories or sing if you played a bard, and his games were more about his story than the characters. |
| #49lord_karsusAug 18, 2008 12:03:11 | I had one DM that wouldn't let us roll up characters, instead we had to write that characters backstory. He statted us and gave us classes based on those write ups. -An interesting way to do it. I don't think I, as a DM, would want to do that, but interesting. |
| #50BelorinAug 18, 2008 18:11:10 | That's a terrible way to DM, if I DM'd that way not only would the players revolt, but deny me my due share of pizza and Jolt cola! Bel |
| #51lord_karsusAug 18, 2008 20:27:56 | That's a terrible way to DM... -I wouldn't say it's a "terrible" way, but it's certainly unique. Assuming that all of the players are starting out at the same level and everything, so long as a player comes up with a very detailed biography, they are likely to end up with a character sheet that matches what they want. I wouldn't try it, though. |
| #52naexAug 18, 2008 20:49:00 | -I wouldn't say it's a "terrible" way, but it's certainly unique. I wouldn't try it, though. Yes, especially since it means that power gamers got a bonus, because of course they were the strongest, smartest and coolest kid in their class growing up, and they were trained by the greatest swordsman ever, with a tutor who was an archmage, and passed on to them a few pointers... And of course the DM got to make the characters he wanted (stat and class-wise), not necessarily what the players wanted to play. |
| #53lord_karsusAug 18, 2008 20:59:41 | Yes, especially since it means that power gamers got a bonus, because of course they were the strongest, smartest and coolest kid in their class growing up, and they were trained by the greatest swordsman ever, with a tutor who was an archmage, and passed on to them a few pointers... -That doesn't necessarily reflect a character that's better than the average bear. Merlin was once a bumbling apprentice. Assuming that the characters start out at Level 1, like I said, a Level 1 Wizard who is self-trained, and a Level 1 Wizard who was trained by Gandalf, Merlin, and everyone else, are in the same "power category". |
| #54merrikcaleAug 19, 2008 14:09:47 | I thought Merlin lived in reverse |

That would make me majorly POed, I'll say that much. Did he make wizard characters cast actual magic, too? |
| #56GreenKnightAug 27, 2008 13:51:58 | I thought Merlin lived in reverse In The Once and Future King, yes. In Le Morte D'Arthur, no. |
