The map is supposed to be from a PCs point of view.  A map  a mapmaker  would make in one of the larger cities of the north.

Full Disclosure: I am a horrible artist, so this map looks much better than anything I could ever draw.

I personally prefer the more-detailed map from the 3e FRCS.

Both the South and the East appears to be truncated.  (Chult and Thay are cut-off.)

BUT all that is trivial because...

This map totally belongs on pg 2 of an Atlas of the Forgotten Realms, facing a page-full (p3) of text with the header "Overview".

If you have seen maps of the medeval world, this map looks in line with those.

Again this is supposed to be a map made by a map maker from a large city in the North, maybe Waterdeep or Neverwinter.  So it is not the detailed map for a DM, it is a map of what your PC might have in their pack.

This map was shown as a preview in Dragon + for the new Sword Coast Adventures book.  The map I posted it is from that.

I love it. Its dark and gloomy and its coloring is limited.

It's a good start. Gives players an overview of the major regions of the Realms without getting into heavy detail.
