New FR / Old FR, differences?

I'll be honest, only books I ever read on forgotten realms were some of the first drizzt books. What happened that created a new FR? What event could possibly be so catastrophic that it would be world changing? How did the world change NOTICEABLY? Plus, what's this thing with the spellplague I keep hearing about? Might sound stupid to think this way, but is it like the bubonic plague, just arcane in nature?

As for god X killed god Y, can't imagine what significance that would have (except if it was maybe lolth that was killed, drow have too much of a reliance on her). As far as I can tell, whereas I used to read that used to worship god X, I'd imagine that when the new FR came about, they now worship god Y, or god Z instead. As far as I can tell, if Tempus died, barbarians may now start yelling 'Bane!' or some other deity's name in battle instead. Can't imagine how world changing that would be.

Also, how do gods fight? Is it like how mortals fight? One god slinking through caves in darkness and succeeding at a sneak attack against another god? What were the settings like, was it like watching hurricanes, tsunamis and earthquakes all at once just to watch two gods fight it out or was it only as exciting as if they were both mortal? What are their weapons like and would they fight alone of be surrounded by minions?

I won't deny it, even I can realize how stupid I sound when asking these questions, but the only forgotten realms books I read were pretty small scale, nothing cosmic happening in any of them. Even the few drizzt books I read, I never got past 'thousand orcs' and even that I never finished reading.

If you told me the difference is like stepping from forgotten realms into azeroth (where races and cultures become more complex and not simply 'these are good, these are evil' (not to sound crude, but FR always struck me as that simplistic)), THAT I can understand, but I'd still like a breakdown of what happened so I can get a better mental image. Also, I heard the lady penitent series was where I can read it all going down, do I need to backtrack first through other books before getting to the series or can it be a stand alone?

Mystra was the god that was killed.  Killing her cased the Weave to tear apart.

As for God wars, there is an interesting take in the Time of Troubles.

The changes to the FR world were caused by the Destruction of Mystra by Cyric who started the Spellplague that fundementally changed the multiverse.

A number of the old Realms gods were killed (Azuth, Helm and others etc).

The lost world of Abeir that was separated from Toril shifted and merged with Toril due to the spellplague. Lands changed a bit, some whole kingdoms changed, others disappeared.

The underlying fact is that the WOTC used the Spellplague as a method to get shot of the lands that no-one really adventured in (Like Maztika for example) and replaced with a new land.

Waterdeep, the sword coast, Cormyr, Silverymoon the Dales are all pretty much unchanged and you could pretty much run the same advenures that were run in the 3rd Ed(or 2nd Ed) realms without any trouble.
