| #1melvangMar 01, 2010 20:28:05 | Hey guys this is my first post here and yes i did try and search for the answer in the forums but to no avail. My question is this I am fairly new to GMing and am currently starting a Forgotten Realms campaign using 3.5 ruleset. For my character I am starting everybody off at lvl 6. My character is the only one that has the lvl modifier for being a drow. Everyone else's character is either human or a race that has no racial lvl modifier. Without feats or the like what exactly would be my base attack bonus and saves for a lvl 6 character that is a drow fighter. From the way me and my other GM are reading this is that my base attack bonus us a +6. 2 comming from being a lvl 2 drow and 4 comming from being a lvl 4 fighter for total character lvl of 6. If I am reading this properly with 2 weapon fighting feat, and wep focus in the required weps and off hand being light I would get one main hand attack at +9 assuming str mod of +4 and off hand attack of +9 as well. Any help on this subject would be greatly appreaciated. Thanx |
| #2sallaMar 01, 2010 20:30:54 | The +2 Level Adjustment doesn't give you any hit points, base attack bonus, class features, or saving throws. All of these will be calculated as if you were a 4th level fighter. The LA gives you your better-than-most-other-people's racial abilities only. |
| #3jubba-maestroMar 01, 2010 20:33:55 | Lol, I'm a newbie too, And I was just about to say that I only had trouble understanding when you mentioned the "2 weapon fighting feat" sentence. |
| #4melvangMar 01, 2010 21:00:33 | The +2 Level Adjustment doesn't give you any hit points, base attack bonus, class features, or saving throws. All of these will be calculated as if you were a 4th level fighter. The LA gives you your better-than-most-other-people's racial abilities only. So what you are saying is that if i want to make a 6th lvl character that is a drow fighter then i would essentially have the experience of an 8th lvl human character. And as a result it would just take considerably more exp to gain a lvl. So my base attack bonus would end up being +6/+1 without feats. |
| #5old_dogMar 01, 2010 21:05:22 | If you are a 6th level drow fighter the rest of the party would be 8th level (if humans). |
| #6The_SilverswordMar 01, 2010 21:07:18 | you would essentially be a 4th level fighter, base attack +4 |
| #7melvangMar 01, 2010 21:10:46 | So for me to make a 6th lvl party I would be 4 lvls of fighter with 15k exp and the rest of the group would be 6 class lvls with 15k exp. And if this is the case would I qualify for an epic feat when i pick up my 20th lvl of fighter?? |
| #8sfdragonMar 01, 2010 21:12:16 | you can also rule 0 and drop the la and the ecl. or make it so that the drow's abilities are cast at the character's lvl. |
| #918DELTAMar 01, 2010 22:48:28 | So for me to make a 6th lvl party I would be 4 lvls of fighter with 15k exp and the rest of the group would be 6 class lvls with 15k exp. And if this is the case would I qualify for an epic feat when i pick up my 20th lvl of fighter?? Do you guys have access to Unearthed Arcana? It has rules that will let you buy the level adjustment off. Its on page 18 in the book. Costs 16,000xp. 7000xp at 6th level, and 9000xp at 9th level. Level adjusted races are nice starting out, but IMO not worth it at higher levels. IIRC you would not quailify for Epic Feats UNTIL you are 20th level, ECL 22. |
| #10DiffanMar 01, 2010 22:50:24 | With a level 6 group and your a drow that has an ECL (effective character level) of 6 then you would have 4 levels of fighter. |
| #11DiffanMar 02, 2010 21:02:19 | BTW, just curious about which sort of build your going with? When I played my drow fighter, he was a straigt up Two-Weapon Fighter with Weapon Finesse and a rapier. He was also sneaky as hell and grabbed a few maneuvers/stances from the Tome of Battle. The shadow hand discipline is espically good for this style of character. If you want, let us know what kinda character/style your looking to play and I'm sure we can help you out with feat selection or a Prestige Class. |
| #12melvangMar 04, 2010 14:22:48 | Thanx for the info Diffan. I was planning on going with 2 wep fighting style and wep finesse. I think i am going to just go with a human character and right now i am thinking of useing feats from PHB and Torn Asunder here is my current feat progression i am thinking of 1 human bonus - wep focus (LS) Fighter Bonus - 2 wep fighting Character feat - Wep Finesse 2 FB - Point Blank Shot 3 C - Precise Shot 4 FB - Wep Spec (LS) 6 C - Wep of Choice (LS) FB - Imp 2 Wep Fighting 8 FB - Greater Wep Focus 9 C - Perfect Strike 10 FB - Improved Crit 12 FB - Greater 2 Wep Fighting C - Greater Wep Spec 14 FB - Enhanced Crit 15 C - Greater Crit 16 FB - Lightning Reflexes 18 FB - Critically Lucky C - Combat Reflexs 20 FB - Unexpected Attack From what i am reading from these feats i will be dual wielding Long Swords with a total base attack bonus of +20/+20/+15/+15/+10/+10/+5/+5 )of course dex mod needs to be included in that) just from TWF penelties and feats with dmg/crit of 1d8+Dex Mod crit on 15-20 x3 and off hand 1d8+half dex mod crit 15-20 x3. If I am wrong on these numbers please let me know. Also was thinking of going a different route depending on Co-DM's (main DM for other campaigns) apporval of a homebrew Feat. Was thinking of calling it Titans Grip (ala World of Warcraft Fury War 51 pt talent) to dual wield 2 handed weps with the restriction that the wep cannot be a reach wep and has to weigh less than 8 or 10 lbs but exclude the sythe based on how it is really wielded but have a requirement of STR of 24+ but this would be an epic feat. I am planning on taking this feat into the epic lvls. Thanx |
| #1318DELTAMar 04, 2010 16:09:15 | You might want to take some Rogue levels. Maximize the two weapon fighting while flanking. Extra Damage via sneak attack. Say 3D6 WITH 7 ATTACKS, would add 21d6 damage.;) |
| #14phelf_der_zemitMar 04, 2010 19:37:38 | Thanx for the info Diffan. I was planning on going with 2 wep fighting style and wep finesse. I think i am going to just go with a human character and right now i am thinking of useing feats from PHB and Torn Asunder here is my current feat progression i am thinking of If you are looking to use you Dex Ability with a longsword weapon finease is not going to do the trick. The longsword is too heavy. An Elventhin blade may be used as such, and it has longsword stats. Just a helpful hint. |
| #15melvangMar 04, 2010 19:52:32 | that is what the perfect strike feat and weapon of choice feat is for. Precise shot and point blank shot are prereqs. found in the book torn asunder. but if i could use the elventhin blade i would not need those 4 feats. but what source book is that found in? |
| #16phelf_der_zemitMar 04, 2010 21:03:12 | Complete Warrior. Equipment section. |
| #17DiffanMar 04, 2010 22:09:12 | I thought those weapons were in Races of the Wild, but I could be wrong. @ Melvang: I agree that a rogue does do for a better Two-Weapon fighter with say, at most 2 to 4 levels of fighter. going Fighter 2/rogue 18 makes for 9d6 sneak attack per attack. I'd do it something like this Human Fighter 2 / Rogue 18 1 Fighter 1- Combat Expertise (1st), Weapon Finesse (Ftr 1), Improved Feint (human) 2 Fighter 2- Two-Weapon Fighting (Ftr 2) 3 Rogue 1- Improved Initiative 4 Rogue 2 5 Rogue 3 6 Rogue 4- Staggering Strike (6th) 7 Rogue 5 8 Rogue 6 9 Rogue 7- Improved Two-Weapon Fighting (9th) 10 Rogue 8 11 Rogue 9 12 Rogue 10- Telling Blow (12th) 13 Rogue 11 14 Rogue 12 15 Rogue 13- Arterial Strike (15th) 16 Rogue 14 17 Rogue 15 18 Rogue 16- Greater Two-Weapon Fighting (18th) 19 Rogue 17 20 Rogue 18 This will net you +9d6 on a hit With 6 attacks that's 45d6 + 6d6 (with shortsword for example) + Str modifier. You'll have a BAB of +14/+19/+4. You'll get Fort +9, Ref +11, Will +6. You should have average HP = 39 + (Con modifier x level). Also, you gain Evasion, Uncanny Dodge and Improved Uncanny Dodge. In addition, you're the skill monkey who will be very essential in any dungeon. The idea is to feint your opponent or flank with your tank and just unload on attacks and SA damage. if your party has a wizard, then the 1st level spell Persistant Blade is going to be your friend because it allows you to flank. Also, there is a Alternative Class Feature in the PH2 that allows you to replace Uncanny Dodge at 4th level (you get it @ 8th level instead) for the ability to swap your SA damage for giving the target a penalty to AC. This also effects creatures that aren't normally affected by Sneak Attack. It's definitly worth it if your DM thows alot of Undead, Oozes, and Constructs at you. |
| #18melvangMar 04, 2010 22:41:16 | diffan, that looks like an awesome build that would be a lot of fun to play as 99% of the time i do play a rogue. However with this campaign that i am going to start running i am writing up everyones character sheets (to get them out of their comfort zone at least to some extent). that is the usual barbarian is now a rogue, the fighter is now a monk, the monk is now playing 2 characters pally and a schizo cleric ( he is our usual GM and will be able to handle it and cleric doesn't know he can heal) and the usaual hybrid caster usually druid or ranger is now playing a barbarian and im going to be playing the fighter. I deffinatly understand where you are going with this but i would like to stay more toward the fighter side of things. I know i know the fighter in 3.5 is broke (as in broke that it needs fixing not broke as in stupidly powerful). but most of these people in my group are not that intimatly familiar with the rules and potential of their normal or going to be new classes. I realize that this thread has heavily leaned away from the main subject but one other thing. With the feat: Wield Oversized Weapon [Epic] You can use larger than normal weapons with ease. Prerequisites: Str 25, Monkey Grip*, base attack bonus +21. Benefi t: You can treat any weapon as if it were one size category smaller than normal and one category “lighter” for the purpose of determining the amount of effort it takes to wield. For instance, a halfl ing with this feat could wield a Medium short sword as a Small light weapon, or a human could wield an ogre’s Large greatclub as a Medium twohanded weapon. The weapon still deals its normal amount of damage. Normal: You may only wield weapons of your size without penalty you could wield for example a 2 handed wep in off hand and a 1 handed wep (not light) in off hand and still be considered as haveing a light wep in off hand correct? |
| #1918DELTAMar 04, 2010 23:58:42 | I like using Combat Reflexes(phb), Deft Opportunist(complete adventurer), and Vexing Flanker(phb2) with my sneak attack 2 weapon fighters. Deadly Precision(xph) is nice also, along with telling blow(phb2). +3 keen holy/unholy kukris. Weapon Crystals from Magic Item Compendium. Ranger11/Rogue5/fighter4.![]() |

It's cool. I hear where your coming from. I too hate making a character that blows monsters and stuff out of the water while relatively new people look on from the sidelines. So now on to a fighter build...
You can wield two weapons 1 category larger than yourself with Monkey Grip. Wield Oversized Weapon allows this to be a bigger weapon in one hand and a big weapon as a light weapon in your off hand. However, this sort of build tends to do poorly due to the -4 penalty you incur from the two big weapons. Also, to get this build to work properly you'll need Oversized Two-Weapon Fighting feat as well. |
| #21DiffanMar 11, 2010 20:27:26 | I came across this pretty unique and nifty alternate class feature for the fighter. It's called Hit-and-Run Tactics from the Drow of the Underdark book. Basically you give up your proficiency for Heavy armor and tower shields to gain a +2 bonus to Initiative checks and when you attack an enemy that's flaf-footed, you add your Dexterity modifier to your damage rolls. If your going for the lightly armored, two-weapon fighting character then this might be something to look into. |
