Hello, (I apologize in advance if this is not the correct forum)

I'm new to DnD and have a character idea but I could use some help from some more experienced players. I was thinking of playing as an Elvish Demon Hunger (Avenger class) but I'm not sure what deity to choose. My DM wants to run our campaign in Forgotten Realms but I don't have the FR sourcebook and I don't really know how demons are even handled in the DnD universe. Are the terms "Demon" and "Devil" pretty much interchangeable? Is there a FR god who would want Demons or Devils slain? I assumed demons would sorta fit since the Religion skill is used to identify them but is there another/better monster-type he could hunt? If so, is there a deity who would want them slain? I did consider the undead but the Avenger class seems best suited to hunt one big monster and the undead seem to mostly be weak and find strength in numbers. (but maybe I'm wrong) Any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you play an Elf, Sehanine Moonbow is a good choice.

If you have an Eladrin, Corellon is the man...

If he's doing 4e FR Sehanine never really existed in the first place. As stupid as I think that is, well, it's what's there.

Corellon would work perfectly well, I'd think, what with being the god of the elves and held to be their creator and all. Demons are a threat to everyone, including the elves, He/She/It wants to protect His/Her/Its 'children', makes sense. Plus there's the whole racial god thing, even if they have been trying to do away with that idea.

Okay, so it sounds like Demons/Devils are just sort of around and not really a unified force that any one deity would specifically be against. Are Devils/Demons independent entites or are they mostly all creations of or servents to evil gods? (sort of like Angels)

he can still use Sehanine Moonbow if the DM and the OP are using homegrown rules.
and as to the OP, any of the good and lawful good deities and a few of the unaligned ones would work.

from Corellon, Amuanator, Bahamut, Torm, the Red Knight, the Seldarine, Mielikki, Chauntea, Silvanus,Ilmater.

I think Asmodeus in a unifying force of the Demons and Devils, I mean he stopped the Blood War apparently and that's been going on since well forever. Though the Demons and Devils aren't the only things to worry about you got to massive Undead Empires to worry about the Shadavar in Anaroch desert and the Thayan undead as well.

Then there are the crazy nutters trying to free Cyric and now the Drow Gods Lolth and Shar are major powers so the forces of good really have alot of work cut out for them.

Also, demons and devils are vastly different than they once were.

Devils are lawful, they are more than happy to help you out if you ask for it, you just gotta pay the price they demand and uphold your end, even if they don't.

Demons are big, stupid, and strong. Think Incredible Hulk without Bruce Banner to control him. They care about one thing and one thing alone: destruction

All gods are against demons, including evil gods (except maybe Asmodeus, the former archfiend turned deity)

All gods (including evil ones, I'm not too sure about Asmodeus, but I believe having angel servants comes with the territory of godhood) have angels to serve them. Angels are semi-autonomous. They are fully aware of whats going on, but their #1 priority is obeying their deity.

From a future upgrade of your character point of view maybe try Tempus if you are playing in FR as you will get the ability to choose the feat "the righteous Rage of Tempus" which will make a hit on a creature a critical once per encounter.

for elven demon hunter types the most appropriate would be Shevarash, seeking retribution against the demonic servants of Lolth

alternatively Corellon (war god) or Fenmarel (anti-hero type)

demons, except the lowliest forms, aren't stupid, quite capable of scheming

Angharadh might still exhibit traits of Sehanine and is quite capable of supporting the clergy devoted to Sehanine. Sehanine had corruption hunters called mhoarnathil which make good avengers.

Cyric has lots of secret monasteries training scores of avengers. I even think avengers make it into the higher echelons of Cyrics clergy. Assasination is Cyrics main weapon to cause strife.

Oghma might be an odd choice for an avenger, but his clergy's dogma makes for great roleplaying, and being knowledable about true names or speaking in the words of creation scares devils and demons into obediency.

Since Thor is an Avenger, he makes the most sense to me.

Then again, so does a Cosmic Muffin, so just ignore me. :P

Hoar, as god of revenge and retribution, sounds like a perfect match for an Avenger. (I've not read the class fluff or anything.)

A non-traditional choice for an Avenger deity would be Lliira. In 3E, after followers of Loviatar killed her mortal lover, the goddess created a militant order within her church to avenge this crime. There's an old Realmslore article on the group here.
