So... I see a lot of us have ideas, and posts, about what we DON'T want to see in novels anymore.

Well, I got to thinking, what is it that you would like to read about?

It would have to be 4e FR time line, mostly, I'm trying to go for realistic here. But, aside from that, anything that isn't already in the works is game.

So... what would you want to read about in a FR book (it can be broad ideas or acute plot lines, specifics)?

I'd like to see a plot that involves a surviving cult of Mystra that somehow manages to travel backward in time and undo everything that was changed (while we're at it, everything back to and including the ToT should be erased).

Or something like what happened to Bobby on Dallas where all the 4E changes are revealed to have been someone's nightmare. Larloch, perhaps. He has odd dreams, being undead and all.

One of those would do quite nicely. I'm completely serious.

Novel ideas...what about telling the story of a goblin or orc tribe or something. I would find that cool and entertaining. Showing their hardships and their struggles to survive in the world, but you still hate them as it vividly describes the tribe burning a human village to the ground. I would read that.

Or maybe a merchant ship from Baldurs Gate is attacked by pirates while sailing to Calimport. The ship drifts for days before ship wrecking on the beaches of Chult. It turns out some members of the crew are gangsters from a theives guild returning to Calimport. The ship wrecked group must survive the harsh elements, deadly creatures, backstabbing allies, unforgiving elements and tribes of headhunters. Throughout the book the goal would be to get to one of the fort cities on the northern coast of Chult.

I think those are some pretty good ideas.

That's all well and good, but I was hoping for something that could be written about, not something you really want but know will never happen.

Anything is possible, it's a fictional world after all.

So there is nothing else you're interested in?

No other ideas to devolve to me?

Well, when the Galactica finally finds the real Earth, I'm torn between hopes that they'll either land vipers on the island for LOST or they'll touch down in Shadowdale circa 1364. How's that?

Oh all right. :P ;)

I would like to see a novel by Elaine Cunningham that tells us about Liriel Baenre's children. That could be pretty interesting, as they'd be half-dark elves or perhaps even half-drow, and we'd get some closure on the Liriel character.

I'd probably read human-scale, picaresque sword-and-sorcery short stories of adventurers by Ed and a few other authors set in Realms-2008, i.e., what Realms fiction is indigenously.

lol, this stuff is ok... but I'm looking for more plots/ideas/what-have-you... and not so much 'who writes them'.

If you must know, I planed to take the best ideas and make FR adventures out of them, run them with a group and write the stories myself for your viewing pleasure.

I'm no ED, Rich or Elaine Cunningham, but I know I can write and it would be a boon to write about the Realms we so enjoy, take some critics from my peers and be all the better for it.

Truthfully, I'm broken, can no longer do what I used to and I'm trying to find something to enjoy for myself and with others.

Well, that's totally different than asking people what they'd like to read. :P

Adventures... let's see... using the same thematic elements I mentioned above...

Liriel held a number of interesting magic items and the Windwalker amulet could be considered a minor artifact. Something that stores "place" energy and allows one to carry that power with them could be valuable to any number of villains in 4E. Perhaps an old wychlaran of Rashemen, now quite frail and near death, wants your players to retrieve the amulet from the tomb of a deceased wychlaran of great power (the grave of Liriel) before one of Szass Tam's undead minions locates it.

Seconded, that is about what I would like to read.

As for giving you ideas for a campaign? I agree that that is a different topic, and it's one I'd need to think on...and I think it'd be best to just create a new topic for that.

Well, you know me. Just give me an RSE and we are on, baby!!

All the same, yes, the thread title is a bit misleading here.

Personally? I would enjoy a plot by the wizards of nearby aligned nations against the Shade in an attempt to drop Shade Enclave and Sakkors from the sky before the Shade even catch wind of it.

The amount of skill and subterfuge would be a feat among any.

Of course, the Shade would have to learn about it at the last moment, but that would be where all the fun began. :D

CENSORED the bastards up good, I do say.

Well, I'd most likely make the adventure and run the ideas I like... but I'm really wanting to see what people here would want to read, if anything, about FR as it is now.

I got small-scale, no RSE's thing down. I like local area problems and working my way up (like starting PC's at level 1 and moving up from there)

That said, what would you like?

Anthologies, ANTHOLOGIES, ANTHOLOGIES...

Even if one or two stories don't 'grab you', you're sure to find a few you like. I personally feel EVERY FR book should be an antholgy. Small stories that open windows for us into the personalities and places of the Realms. Also, an author doesn't have to stretch himself - I think, perhaps, part of the problem is that a longer novel or series is a bit of over-reaching for some of them. Short stories make everyone happy, and they cause far less continuity problems (usually).

No more series!!!

If I buy a novel with the Realms logo on it, I do NOT want it to take place in the Outer Planes, or the Shadowfel, or Lolth's Underewear, or anywhere else for that matter!! I want the FOCUS to be on the Realms, not some godly domain I can give a rat's arse about and that I will never use in my games!!!

Well... Lolth's Underwear might be entertaining... :embarrass

I really would like to see some stories come out that deal with low level heros dealing with local issues, and for the sake of everything I hope they lay off the RSE for a while. I mean every single book doesn't need to completely rewrite the setting and after everything that was destroyed in the edition transition I'd like it if some books would come out to describe the the newly changed world a little rather than just rewriting it again. That said, I wouldn't be too upset if some of the newer lands suffered a little like having some of the refugees from Mulhorand bring down the revived Imascari empire and then kick the Abier our of the lands that replaced the Mulhorandi empire. Ok, so that's a bit too much to hope for but I can dream can't I? In any case, I really would like to see some anthologies. I'd also really like to see atleast one story come out on a group of monster race heros. Maybe a story about a group of orcs from the Kingdom of Many Arrows dealing with the raids of the organization (sorry, I can't remember the name off the top of my head but I thought its initials were kkk) that has been illeagally hunting them our of Luruar and the dwarven kingdoms? Perhaps even have the adventuring group be a mixed group of orcs and goblins and kobolds? Another possibility is having a group of Shifters from the Werewoods adventuring and having to deal with persecution from the traveling inquisitors of Elturgard who are trying to wipe out the non-human (or at least the supposedly non-goodly races in their eyes) in the areas around Elturgard. This story arc could even have the shifters end up helping defend travellers against raids out of Najara and the like but being hunted all the same as the inquisitors of Elturgard try to frame them as enemies of the state for supposedly attracting the raids they are fighting off? Anyways, I hope that this gives you some ideas.

how about an anthlogy about how the chosen survive/ perish. Or maybe some red wizard tracks down the simbul and elminster and tries to kill them while elminster tries to defend them with a rock or a frying pan quoting old sayings the whole time.

You mean the CCC (it's a big difference, I know...).

I love the Chosen of Mystra, but this new setting was specifically tailored for people who don't (among other things).

Ideas
At the risk of sounding like a right-wing radio host, I think Realms fiction could do with fewer high-concept all-new flavour-of-the-week bright ideas bloated to trilogy-length, and more well-told tales, jointly inspired by the Realms and not bolted onto it, that their authors want to write. Almost every novelist gets "Hey Mr Author, I've got a great idea for a book, what say you write it and we'll split the proceeds?" It's all in the execution, not the summary.

Anthologies
Sadly, as we know, short stories are out of style (contrary to popular but simplistic notions of dwindling attention spans). Conversely, as reported by Steve Tompkins on thecimmerian.com:
I’m reminded of Douglas Winter’s introduction to Caitlín R. Kiernan’s Tales of Pain and Wonder (2000), wherein he disparaged the gimmickry of gimcrack horror anthologies: “The stories presented in these books seem to have been written about nothing but being part of the anthology; they are, to be blunt, stories written to fill space.”

And that's a risk you have with theme anthologies, as most of the Realms of series have been.

Well, I do indeed plan on local-scale hero's, not the uber-RSE stoppers. I think, to start, Anthologies are a good way to go.

I like the idea of the Many Arrows band fighting injustices... I'd like to do one on the Dalelands, of course, using my lowly Swordmage on his way to becoming a Bladesinger.

Other ideas; underground railroad like misadventure for the slaves of Calimshan.

A look at the Eldreth Veluuthra in the Hullack forest.

A resistance group in Sembia and a brief look at their struggles.

A dip into whats left of the Harpers.

*More ideas are very welcome. Feel free to gives ideas on the ones mentioned and/or some of your own.
