#4 Therise Dec 01, 2008 13:43:47	Isn't Plague of Spells the first book of Cordell's Abolethic Soverignty series? This pretty much sums up why I won't buy it: Cordell describing Raidon Kane: "I am Raidon Kane. I hunt the things that hide beneath the façade of normalcy, that slither out of places that should-not-be, wearing masks of flesh and illusion. Few remain who know enough to defend Faerûn from this threat. I am one." Also, "His daughter is dead. His home has been destroyed. His life is empty save for one thing. Everything faded to blue, then to nothing. Revenge." Kane apparently has a spellscar, which is Show described as "His aberration-fighting artifact, the Seal of the Cerulean Sign, is branded onto his chest, becoming a uniquely potent spellscar."

#6 rauric Dec 01, 2008 14:30:16	OMG now that sold me. Seriously that is like my dwarf's attitude in my last Eberron game. He was going to try and join a group like the Cerulean Sign. I may have to get back into buying Realms Novels.

I guess I will be in the UK until I am done with my MA...and who knows where afterwards...probably Singapore or Japan.

#11 old_sage Dec 01, 2008 19:12:59	I've had a partial fascination with aboleths and aboleth-related lore in the past, like most aberrations, so I'll likely purchase and read these books. Additionally, I find the concept of an "Abolethic Sovereignty" to be somewhat intriguing, so that's a plus in my book.
#12 suin_bahhar_02 Dec 01, 2008 19:32:05	This series is going to give an indepth view of the events during and just after the spellplague, and I want to explore that era for a campaign during the mysterious spellstorm. I am glad they won't shy away from explaining the event in detail, like WotC initially announced. The future 100 years are in need of some detail to give some momentum to the daily events in the 15th century realms. I liked Darkvision's characters, this Raidon sounds a bit too paranoid though.
#13 lord_karsus Dec 01, 2008 19:36:39	I liked Darkvision's characters, this Raidon sounds a bit too paranoid though. -Raidon Kane is introduced and "detailed" in Stardeep, though there isn't all that much detailing going on, by virtue of him being one of five or six characters in a stand-alone book. -He's Half-Shou Human and Half-Star Elf, so in my book, he's an okay guy.
#14 notthefamouswizard Dec 03, 2008 7:40:07	Finsihed last night. Interesting romp with a several good ideas, though this first book had little about the actual aboleths (most of the book was about trying to prevent them from waking up). Spoilers from here on out. I said spoilers ya know. I know it's in the title but I want to be sure. First off, lots of spell-plague as you'd expect. There are two main spellscarred characters. The first major character is Kaine himself who after being effectively petrified for a decade by the blue fire, found his Cerulian Sign had mutated into a tattoo across his chest that grants him most of the items powers as inherent abilities, along with a telepathic connection to the Cynosure construct from Stardeep. (The past decade has... not been kind to the poor construct, or to Stardeep, which suffered a rather catastrophic breach. I'll leave it as that) Cynosure puts Kaine on the trail of Kiril Duskmourn, the star elf from the Stardeep novel (or more specifically, her sword Angul), who vanished soon after the spellplague. The bit with his 'daughter' was actually the main disappointment for me, as she's introduced out of nowhere and killed off before we even 'meet' her. Characters who exist soley to give other characters motivation, with no personality or story of their own kind of irritate me. Meanwhile, the spellplague opened up several fissures at the bottom of the Sea of Stars, which a rogue Kua-Toa priestess has been plumbing for artifacts. Long story short, she finds something she shouldn't and awakens something best left sleeping and strikes some desperate bargains she really, really shouldn't... ...and on the other side of the sea of stars the amoral and curiously-powerful-and-well-informed-for-a-classless-NPC merchant Behroun Marhana blackmails a fae-pacted warlock named Japheth (who has a very interesting backstory by the way, so interesting I'm not going to spoil it here) into seeking out the artifact the Kua-Toa priestess unearthed. To this end he has Japheth accompany a crew of ruthless 'privateers'. Things become complicated when Japheth finds a stowaway on board in the form of Behroun's spoiled younger sister, who may not be entirely human. (Either because she's spellscarred or an unknowing pawn of dread forces beyond human comprehension) That's pretty much the basic premise. beyond that there's blue fire, drugs that really do send you to hell, mad pilgrims out for spellscars, a giant kraken, a chalk horse (more interesting than it sounds that last one) and some very demented and very ****** off fae. I'd say more but I'm out of time, so there you have it. Enjoy!

Still not interested. I'd rather read a series dedicated to Ususi, the Imaskari Mage and post-Plague empress of Upper Imaskar.

As a supporting character (Lady of Poison), she was pretty good, and as a protagonist (Darkvision), she was alright. To have her elevated to such lofty heights reeks to me of plot armor and muchkinism and such. Ususi spoke of establishing colonies and such on the surface, but I'd find it hard to believe that the ruler of Deep Imaskar would not take control of such things, especially if they were profitable enough to eventually perpetuate a returned Imaskar. Dark and Empty, He still is awesome!!!! :P -As a separate character, maybe, because that actor does look creepy. But, as THE Kane, nah. THE Kane couldn't talk, was horribly scarred, etc.

Though, they are books that take place in the past, as opposed to the current era, so...It's not that bad, I guess. But, Jacen did not get justice, so Lucas does not get money.

I have the feeling it won't be a hard promise for me to keep. I made that one regarding anything Realms related from the beginning of the 4E transition forward. Though mine is somewhat conditional, I'm expecting it to hold pretty well through at least the year. Trying to decide if I'm extending it to 4E core, whose mechanics I find somewhat iffy. I like rituals (sort of), not certain about the baseline powers. Not amused by the format for the core book and the less I say about the Monstrous Manual the better. Eh well, lots of stuff to aquire from previous editions, looking into Gurps and World of Darkness.

It's a bit different from the other two, I thought, a little more character-driven and the partially undersea setting is interesting. The descriptions of the actual Spellplague itself are quite interesting. I liked it quite a bit more than Stardeep, actually.
