I just finished "The Shield of Weeping Ghosts" tonight. I am confused with the ending of the book and I wondered if anyone could help explain it.

I enjoyed the characters immensely in the book especially since it contained a durathan and ethan as I love books dealing with the Witches and Rashemen but I am still kinda confused what the Word, the Breath and Flame really are.

Is the Flame just a magic ring that protects against cold?

From what I got out of the 2 chapters is that the durathan and Bastun went through the Word (a lightless gate) and it lend into a room with runes on the floor. Bastun thrust the Breath into the floor and the room surroundings fell away and suddenly they found they were on the plane of Stygia, the layer of hell that is frozen. There the durathan was carried away by the denizens from the plane. Suddenly Serevan, the prince, was there. Bastun thrust the Breath through him and the prince died. The curse of the Shield ended? Why did Bastun have the blue eyes??

Is that right?? I found the ending VERY hard to follow and understand - the last 5 chapters of the book really had me confused.

Can anyone help me understand what happened??

From what I remember, the Flame is a ring that protects against cold. If it does more than that, I do not recall it.

The Word is more than a portal to Stygia it also allows the user to wield the power of the Plane itself in some fashion. As to the nature of Bastun, he and Levistus made some kind of deal when he accepted the power of The Word and used it. As to what the deal was and what was lost and gained is "left mysterious", according to James P. Davis.
