So a while back (probably a year or more) I bought the 6 "Ed Greenwood Presents: Waterdeep" books, and I attempted to start the reading process and immediately in "Blackstaff Tower" I feel as if I should have read some other books previous to starting these.

I've read quite a bit of Salvatore and some Greenwood stuff already, but nothing really about Blackstaff yet, and was just curious if there were any series that I should have read before delving into the Waterdeep series.

Blackstaff Tower is the sequel (of sorts) to the novel Blackstaff, both by Steven Schend. If memory serves me correctly, there are a few references to the former, but not that many. If you can get your hands on a copy of Blackstaff, that should help.

There's a similar scenario in Erik Scott de Bie's Downshadow, where there's a reference or two to characters from de Bie's past writings. Not getting the reference wouldn't throw off the novel, but it's a nice thing to savor for fans of his other works.

As a whole, though, the EGPW novels are pretty solid stand-alone books. In this case, the background reading isn't what I'd called necessary; it just enhances one or two of the books in the series.

I like having the background of things. That's why when Cadderly shows up or is mentioned in some Drizzt books, I actually fully understand who he is because of reading the Cleric Quintet stories.

Thanks though, I will try to find Blackstaff.
