Lathander...?

Two characters that I used to love to play were a LG paladin of Torm and a NG cleric of Lathander....I am not too worried about the Torm issue...Torm will be the head honcho of Lawful Goodness...but Lathander...

Who will remain the powerful prominent promoter of Goodness and goodness only in the vacuum left by Amaunator? Selune? Perhaps? Does anyone have any ideas.

I always enjoyed role playing LG characters precisely because they are so different to my personal character. I liked NG because it saw the necessity to do good and only good; fits in more with my personal character. What god/goddess will remain? Even Corellon will be unaligned. Who will be the new Pelor of the Realms?

Your best bet will probably be Amaunathor, but its probably best to wait and see what they say in the FR Campaign book coming in August. Also, since it sounds like you will be playing 4E, don't forget there is no NG or CG anymore

I know but there will be Good...

And who will best represent the Good as opposed to Law and Good? (We know Torm will do that).

I think you will be considered Good aligned and you should still be able to worship unaligned gods. Those gods may just have more worshippers than just good or evil people. Correlon will recognize those bigotted elves that hate all but elves. He will also recognize unaligned and goodly people as well.
In the end you can be LG and worship Correlon and other unaligned gods.

Don't know if we have one... can't really go on old information since with all the pantheon and fluff changes, it's fairly unreliable. Not that I ever thought he was a paragon of the alignment, but Corellon has always been goodly, and now even that certainty has gone out the window in the wake of 4e. There will probably be one, but I doubt we're going to know until either the FRCG is out or something comes out in an article.

Amaunator of course. I always felt he was more "Pelor-ish" than Lathander. All Lathander wanted to do was hang around Chauntea and help plow her...uh i mean the fields.......

He is unaligned. Corellon is I mean. For sure. And somehow Moradin is LG? Makes no sense...but what does in 4.ed....

Yes, I'm aware he's unaligned... which was rather my point. If even one of the iconic types can get changed that drastically, we really can't be sure of anything in regards to the pantheon. At this point, it wouldn't surprise me to see Bane and/or Shar slide to CE to really show how bad they are, despite that making no sense whatsoever.

Hasn't Moradin been Lawful Good for years?

From Legends & Lore, published 24 years ago.

Anyway, as for NG gods, are we talking strictly Greater Gods, here? Because Chauntea is NG. And are we talking only gods which were NG in prior editions, or which are just plain Good in 4E? Cause in that case, we've also got Selune and Sune.

Yes, that was exactly the point; Moradin has been LG for years and Corellon CG for years; why not make Corellon G then?

I mean a god that promotes Goodness, in a way similar to Lathander or Pelor.

In the case of Corellon, I think the idea is they want to make him more Fey. They want him to be as beneficial and dangerous as nature, itself.

And once again, if formerly Chaotic Good gods are on the table, the Selune is a pretty big one, there. One who actively opposes evil. And she's recently returned to being a Greater God.

Lathander wasn't that much like Pelor, was he? I don't think he was much like either the Greyhawk version or the "generic" version in the 3E core books.

Remember, too, that these plot developments concerning the gods do not HAVE to be used in home games.

Have to disagree with you there. I think Amaunator and Pelor are similar only because they are both sun gods. Of course, I'm only speaking of the old Amaunator--perhaps the new version is a bit different.

He was a LN god of law and bureaucracy as well as the sun. Pelor on the other hand is more concerned with goodness, altruism and healing.

You could worship Batman. Wizards has recently announced a joint venture with Warner Bros. promoting their new film BATMAN BEGINS AGAIN. Thats right, Wizards of the coast and Warner Bros. is teaming up to give YOU the player the chance to combine two things you love-D&D and Batman. In the new Forgotten Realms campaign set, Batman will be featured as a demigod.

Perhaps Chauntea makes a good candidate for a Neutral Goodish cleric, as she used to match alignment and knows Lathander a lot better than Aumanator does.

Why not! Lots of commoners do so too!

Chauntea is a docile but her clerics are nice to have in your party. The local folk like farmers will adore the cleric whos powers make it a walking bountiful miracleworker. Seriously, most clerics are respectfully feared for their powers, but chaunteans are so well known they get an edge in social situations.

It's interesting, as a Chauntean priest might be exactly the type of person you'd want with you in a dire situation (for healing, for the ties to local communities, and for their general good qualities), but they are sort of boring from a heroic perspective. It's hard to envision playing a paladin of Chauntea ("save the potatoes, for Chauntea!"), or roleplaying a Chauntean Priest ("you know, a diet in simple grains and vegetables would be far healthier than that ale and fatty beef.") without some chuckles.

Worshipping Chauntea seems sort of like worshipping the classic "mom". Most adventurers want the excitement of a deity that takes up a sword and shouts cool slogans as they brave death, rather than the one who wants to buy a really good farming plow.

Well... I think a paladin order who fights against the rising of Shars Shadow Tomato's would be quite popular on these boards. I heard farmer with a pitchfork #3 has reached its paragon path already.

Seriously I always found the first goddeses of the realms to be very interesting choices for clerics. Shar, Selune, Mystra and Chauntea are all favoriters of mine.

The drama! Cue in as a close friend wants to take a bite out of his shadomatoesandwich as our priest exorcises the sandwhich out of his hands with a divine flame. Or a village where the shadow pototoes have total tyranical control over the population making them mindless workers on fields of darkweed, calling the shadowfell closer and closer...

Somehow we have to involve or tie in a battle with a dire pig ("attack it with lightning!"), so the eventual outcome can be the discovery of the toasted BLT sandwich. :D

Nelyssa Shendean, one of the Riders of Mistledale. She has the *cough* fancy paladin title of "Field Guardian".

LOL! However, I do see some logic to that. Those who would strike at the Dalelands might very well strike at the livelyhood at those who live there (ie. the crops).

Tastes vary. My first Living City character was a cleric of Chauntea. One of my wife's PCs (not her first) was a Paladin of Chauntea. Neither character used the slogans cited, although the Paladin did think that removing evil creatures was akin to pulling weeds from Chauntea's garden. Protecting the common man and fighting undead or other unnatural creatures are very plausable perspectives for an advocate of Chauntea. I thought it was refreshing role playing such a PC.

I have to say that I too am at something of a loss as to what deity to go with now. Lathander was always one of my favorites, especially for playing clerics or paladins. Amaunator just isn't the same. I mean, he's not even good. Tyr and Torm always struck me as being a bit too focused on obedience. Helm was alright, but he's dead now. Ilmater's kind of cool, but I'm still not sure what exactly is going on with him in 4E.

Although after reading this thread, I really want to play a paladin of Chauntea and embark upon the great Potato Quest.
