My players are about to go Lady Moonfire's party in Loudwater, and I intend for them to meet a temporary companion character there, who might help out with the Lair of Shadows and perhaps some of the follow-up. He is a merchant agent for one of the wealthy families in Waterdeep, overseeing a caravan. (He is also a swordmage.)

According to the the FRCG, there is Tiefling who is a city judge in Waterdeep named Kylynne Silmerhelve. Perhaps my character is a nephew of Silmerhelve's? But, I don't know much about current goings-on in Waterdeep. Is Silmerhelve likely to have a nephew? Also, which merchant house would be a good match for this character?

Sure. It hasn't been said that Kylynne has no family so I don't see why not. Even if they had done something so pointless as claim he has no kin, you could just ignore it with no repercussions.

Also, which merchant house would be a good match for this character?

Unfortunately, we don't really know the status of the merchant houses in 4E, unless LFR has a few nuggets of information of which I'm unaware.

Thank you, LM. I just found in:

House Silmerhelve
Kylynne Silmerhelve, newly appointed tiefling magister **maybe Kylynne is no tiefling at all, but a half-dragon descendant of the bronze dragon Nymmurh –the Wyrm Who Watches?
Dala Silmerhelve, only daughter of House Silmerhelve WATE1-1

I don't know what to make of this "maybe ... no tiefling at all".

Maybe I'll steer clear of the Silmerhelves. My character is vaguely inspired by Danillo Thann, and I see from this page that House Thann still exists. Maybe I'll make him an agent of that house.

As I recall, the ** comment was the opinion of the OP of that thread, not from any canon reference.  Personally, I just assumed he married into the House or perhaps was adopted.

Unlike the noble houses, I do not believe any systematic attempt was ever made to catalog the merchants in Waterdeep (unless someone did at Candlekeep); there would be a lot.
