Mysterious obelisks have been turning up at various crossroads throughout the realms. No one has seen anyone constructing them. They just appear when no one is present to witness the event. A word "Tasak" is the only writing on them, otherwise they are plain granite. Each stands 8 ft high and is about a foot in diameter. They resist being moved or uprooted, and the few that have been were found reset as soon as their were no witnesses to give an explanation as to how. One merchant tried to haul away one, but it turned to sand after a few miles, and when he returned to the original site, the obelisk had returned. So far less than a score have been found, but every tenday seems to bring a new report. Any thoughts, comments? |

It's a semi-sentient network built in the earliest of days that has spent the last century recharging and healing and now is ready to rebuild the network. Originally built by servants of the primordials, it spans both the returned lands and Faerûn. Unfortunately, the gates feed off the life energy around them and they will, over time, turn large areas around them into twisted, half-dead wastelands. An epic journey of trips through the gates and through ancient ruins (and possibly to ancient times - maybe some of the gates can do time travel) will be required to either destroy the network or to fix their deadly flaw. |

Making the network semi-sentient (or sentient) opens interesting possibilities. What if you can talk to it? What if it's a good caring network that just wants to make sure everyone arrive safely but doesn't have any sense of the world outside the network? What if it's The Computer from Paranoia with complicated alien rules? |

I actually had a DM do something similar for my group when I first start gaming in a setting (it was Greyhawk back then about 20+ years ago, ...) It ended up being a prelude to an invasion by a race called the Kzinti. Once enough of these obelisks where in place they started spewing out an invasion force. |
