In my FR campaign, Brosha Manx in Loudwater is developing into a significant character. From the Forgotten Realms Wiki, I see that the late Mystra, formerly Midnight, was formerly named Ariel Manx. I wonder if there is a relation?

says that she "was the second child of Theus Manx a merchant and his wife Paiyse." But where did they live? This would help me decide whether or not to put this into Brosha's background.

*shrugs* I honestly have no clue where she's from originally, but it says she studied at the Deepingdale temple, and that her homeland was close enough to the temple, so I'd say Dalelands, Cormyr, Moonsea, or Sembia. But she could be from Loudwater, and even if she isn't (you see where I'm going with this)...
It would make sense for them to be related. Ive never heard of any other character with the surname of Manx. Doesnt seem like it would be a common one or anything. Maybe we should start a list of Surnames of the Realms. Jeeze man that would be a hell of a list, who would want to do that?

I would get to work on that but between spell conversions and STDs of the Realms im pretty swamped.
The FRCS (3E) actually has that language section near the front of the book, which lists examples of common names (male, female, and surname) in the different languages. I don't have it in front of me, but one could scour it for Manx if one so choosed. I don't recall seeing it there, though.

Nope no Manx listed. So I guess its not a common surname, so I would say its very possible they are related. Might be a good question for Ed, but I betya it NDAed, which would be a yes in my book. But any way I dont think Ed had much to do with the creation of Ariel Manx any way.

That makes sense, Most everybody else knew her as Midnight, and Cyric made a big deal of learning that her name was Ariel, like no one else knew it.

Her own parents probably don't know what happened to her, unless she sent them a vision to let them know what was up. Her tutor, that priest from Deepingdale, though, has a deep connection to the Weave. Perhaps he might have sensed the identity of his new mistress, though then again, maybe not, since the whole point in changing her name to Mystra was to perpetuate the legacies of Mystryl and Mystra, and maintain traditions.
