#1 kyblik Sep 03, 2008 7:25:00	hello everyone, just got my hands over 4e FR setting manual. i dont want to say how dissapointed i am what they did with Forgotten Realms.. but im curious about Abeir. in what sourcebooks/books/magazines i can find any information about the old Abeir, when they where cut from each other with Toril?? who did it? was Abeir all those millenia in another galaxy or plane or space, where? why it was 'Abeir-Toril' from the begining of FR setting?? i have 2nd ed. AD&D, 3e D&D FR settings, but there is no information about Abeir. i know, now it is from the story about both Abeir and Toril, Primordials get Abeir, Toril was taken by Gods, but it is now in 4e.. where i do find informations about the 'old' Abeir?? thx for help, Petr

#3 rauric Sep 03, 2008 7:47:10	There is no past info on it. It was added with this Edition. Nobody every heard of any of the events due to that knowledge being "lost" through the ages. The gods kept their mouths closed about it also. It was a retcon.

They used "Abeir-toril" ("more commonly called Toril") to describe the planet up until the revised boxed set for 2nd edition. By the time the 3rd edition Campaign Setting arrived, seems like they were calling the planet Toril (no mention of Abeir-toril, that I ever took notice of). Even on page 5 of the Campaign Setting book, they say "Faerun is only one continent on the world known as Toril." I first heard of Abeir's return in Dragon Magazine #359 (final issue) in the "Unsolved Mysteries of D&D" article. Then, the excerpts for the 4e Campaign Guide started appearing online. Kinda interesting but I personally wish they'd left Abeir and Toril as seperate entities; Abeir the unknown, Toril the world we know.

It meant "Cradle Of Life", but people dropped the "Abeir" in common conversation and simply called it Toril. From the Ol' Grey Box, the 1st edition campaign set: "Abeir-toril, more commonly called Toril, is the name of the orb that Faerun and the Forgotten Realms is set upon, just as Earth is the Orb that Eurasia is set upon. The name is archaic, meaning "Cradle of Life," and is rarely used in everyday life." In meta terms, a 1e designer (Jeff Grubb?) added Abeir to the original name Toril so it could appear at the front on the encyclopaedia in the Ol' Grey Box. Presumably the sages of Faerun are just as confused as we are.

#15 Artifact Sep 04, 2008 9:48:12	Compared to many 3.5 supplements for the setting, The Grand History of the Realms is a good looking book. I'm a longtime Realms fan ('course ;)) but I never picked it up because honestly I thought it was kinda "dry" (sorta like a history lesson ;)). I enjoy Realms fluff but didn't think I would get much use out of the minute historical details of the published Realms vs. my homebrew games. Still, it is a beautiful book; I should try to find a copy someday soon (before they become too rare-- and expensive).
