| #3lohnpondaiSep 08, 2008 16:29:02 | I have. I made one for my campaign (its running on events around the Return of the Wizards trilogy). I took as template another Lvl 12 Solo Monster, and then changed a bit the powers to suit my needs. I decided to make an adult phaerimm a solo monster, since reading the Return of the Archwizards trilogy, the first Phaerimm appearance was quite frightening and one single of them was quite problematic for a bunch of people. Phaerimm Adult Phaerimm Level 12 Solo Artillery Large aberrant magical beast XP 3,500 Initiative +9 Senses Perception +13; Blindsight 20 HP 580; Bloodied 290 AC 28; Fortitude 31; Reflex 28; Will 30 Resist 20 magic. Saving Throws +5 Speed 4, fly 10 (hover), overland flight 15 Action Points 2 BMA Claw (standard; at-will) Reach 2; +14 vs AC; 1D6+5 and target is pushed 3 squares and knocked prone. BRA Force Blast (standard; at-will) Reach 10; +16 vs Ref. 1D8+8 force damage. Phaerim Fury (standard; at-will). The Phaerim makes a Force Blast attack and two Claw attacks. Stinger Implant (standard; at-will). +13 vs Fortitude; 1D6+3 and the target takes 5 ongoing poison damage and is immobilized (save ends both). Phaerimm can use this attack against a target it has grabbed. Aditionally, once per encounter, an adult or older Phaerimm will use its stinger to lay an egg inside the creature. The young emerges about 90 days later, literally devouring the host from inside. A Remove affliction ritual rids a victim of the egg, as does a successful Heal DC 25 check made by a trained character. If the check fails, the healer can try again, but each attempt deals 1D6 damage to the patient. Mind Control (minor action; recharge 6) Ranged 5; +13 vs Will; the target is dominated (save ends, with a -2 penalty on the saving throws). Aftereffect: The target is dazed (save ends). The Phaerimm can only dominate one creature at a time. Force Barrage (standard; recharge 5+) Phaerimm targets up to 3 creatures; first target must be within 10 squares of the Phaerimm, second target within 10 squares of the first, and third within 10 squares of the second. +16 vs Reflex; 2D12 + 10 Force damage. Miss: Half damage. This attack does not provoke opportunity attacks. Force Burst (standard; at-will) Area Burst 3 within 20; +16 vs Reflex; 2D6+4 force damage. Miss: half damage. Alignment: Evil Languages: Deep Speech, Common. Str 14 (+8) Dex 18 (+10) Wis 19 (+10) Con 18 (+10) Int 16 (+9) Cha 23 (+12) I guess you could make up stats for young and ancient Phaerimms if you need different encounter levels. Please, be sure to comment on anything you would add or change. Hope its useful. |
| #4HammerheadSep 08, 2008 16:48:43 | Looks good. I think not all Phaerimms shoult be solo though since they usually have minion creatures (such as those mutated lizardmen in the underdark book) |
| #5naexSep 08, 2008 16:53:31 | added the phaerimm above to the 4e Running the Realms Links thread. |
| #6lohnpondaiSep 08, 2008 16:58:10 | Geee thanks naex. :D |
| #7keverasSep 09, 2008 5:00:26 | Adult Phaerimm Level 12 Solo Artillery Powerful, isn't it? An adult Phaerimm in 3e had a CR 12. Imo that doesn't mean that such a guy is on lvl 12 in 4e too, least of all a solo monster. A 12th lvl solo monster would be a 17 lvl Elite guy. Hmm... I would place the guy a little bit lower. The exact lvl I don't know, yet, however. |
| #8lohnpondaiSep 09, 2008 13:26:36 | Powerful, isn't it? Well... to be honest... old lvl 20 is the equivalent to actual lvl 30 (meteor swarm skill level if you would prefer) so CR12 on 3E prolly would be translated to something over lvl 15 in 4E. Anyway, i didnt really made the template thinking about 3E. I just set the power lvl of the Phaerimm around those of some other dreadful creatures. I dont see as overkill making an adult Phaerimm a solo lvl 12 monster. They do control beholders, you knew? And a few of these sent good ol Elminster on the run in the High Forest. Theres a lot more examples of monsters being made substantially tougher in 4E D&D. Correct me if im wrong but i dont recall Kuo-toa being as tough as in the new edition. Theres quite a few other monsters who have been rebalanced i believe. Hell, even orcs i find tougher now (you got lvl9 orcs in the MM). Anyway if i have time, ill try to make some more templates for young (non solo monsters) and ancient Phaerimms. Those could be handy. |

I see your point, yeah. Anyway, lvl 20 in 3e isn't lvl 30 in 4e (at least not in regard to monsters). Imo there is no strict guideline in converting/comparing the level of monsters, though. |
