#1 wagnersika Oct 14, 2008 14:04:20	I'm DMing a campaign in Damara. I have been trying to find photos of places on Earth that could represent Damara to show to the players. I found someone had compiled really nice pictures of Vaasa here Any suggestions on what earthy places could stand in as Damara? Is there any artwork in the net or some sourcebooks about Damara? The Bloodstone Lands 1e sourcebook has very few pictures and they are not very helpful.

The pictures I linked to could be used to portray Damara of course, but I was hoping to find some more pictures. I'll rephrase my original question: Any suggestions on what earthy places could stand in as Damara or Vaasa?
#4 christopher_rowe Oct 14, 2008 16:38:42	I'd just google image search various likely sounding places until I found that struck my fancy. Nunavut and Siberia would be the places I personally checked first.

#6 christopher_rowe Oct 15, 2008 7:15:57	Y'know, I'm sorry to say that my direct experience of the far north is limited to flying over it (though one of the big life goals I've yet to scratch off my list is to travel from my home in Kentucky to some point north of the Arctic Circle on my bicycle.) Let's see, I'd try: Denali National Park, the Yukon Territory, the Iceland interior, and then maybe tie "wilderness" to Finland, Sweden, and Norway? Go four or five pages deep in image searches on all those and you should come up with some good stuff.
#7 Bluenose Oct 15, 2008 8:40:28	Scotland's border region might give you some of what you want. Population density isn't to high, it was fought over regularly so there's a fair amount of fortifications, and it hasn't changed that much since the Middle Ages. Just ignore the walker. For Northern Damara there's the Scottish Highlands and it's mountain ranges. Vaasa might work well in some parts of the Highlands but there's also pictures of the Isles if they don't include the sea.

#9 wagnersika Oct 16, 2008 1:18:28	Thank you all. I'll be sure to google those places. I found some pretty good pictures from Canadian national parks, some from Siberia and even Mongolia. Finland, I feel is too foresty for Damara and the finnish and swedish Lapland (far north) too barren and I think somehow more Vaasan ( Indeed, Vaasa is a town in Finland.) I'll take a second look at our own pictures of hikes in the finnish and swedish Lapland and google some though. These are taken on our hike to fjell Halti in northernmost Finland. You mean with such nice idiotic fortifications? :P Bavaria wasn't so a small state. It was more a uhm, ungerman backyard of Austria. Hardy People? Bavaria? Then I am more with the people of that what's called Harz, they had really harsh winters there, also around that part what's called Erzgebirge (where I am from). Bavaria wasn't that bad, seen in the whole sense, cause it was a greater state. The smaller regions in the higher mountains maybe, but the regions around munich and in the dales of the greater rivers? Nope the people in the middle mountainranges of germany had a harder live, really small provincial backwater countys and such stuff. I have imagined Damara mostly like the things Rohan from Middle Earth, hillsides, plains, mountains, much snow, wide country, nothing I would like to visit during holidays.

It was more a uhm, ungerman backyard of Austria. Hardy People? Sorry - American here, and when I think 'Germanic', the name 'Bavaria' just pops into my head. I was thinking a stocky, hardy folk with a love for beer and weinershniztel. :D Damara just says 'Oktoberfest' to me, but thats just me, and although it does have its frigid countryside and mountains, those pictures above work nicely for the 'flatlands', I think. Remember that Vassa is similar, but the entire country is filled with swamps, marshes, and bogs, due to the constant run-off from the mountains and Great Glacier. Although it is frigid in the winter, thats the best time to travel, when the ground is mostly frozen. Neither country is all that hospitable. Perhaps Romania would have been more accurate, but I liken Rashemi to that RW country (although all of those people in the northeast are related). Edit: I just found a pic of how I imagine it looking, and this is from Ireland!
#13 lord_karsus Oct 20, 2008 18:22:58	-I never equated Damara or Vaasa with Germany. Both were places that I never assigned actual world equivalents. Maybe a combination of the Wild West, Demons, and snow.
