I just noticed this, and figured that others might have missed it too. It's a prequel to The Dungeons: The Crypt Of The Moaning Diamond by Rosemary Jones.

Free classic Forgotten Realms fiction on the WotC website! :D

Mini-Review:

It was nice to read about the Siegebreakers again, but with only their familiar bickering going on, it wasn't really as enjoyable as I found the novel. Maybe I just should have read it at a different time of the day. Or maybe it was too short to put a lot of stuff in.

There's no great danger, apart from the short bit about fleeing the exploding tower. Perhaps if the mad hog-hunting wizard had still been present, hurling spells as the Siegebreakers ferried dead pigs to and fro, things might have gotten interesting... :D

-Having responded to this on Candlekeep, I'll say what I said there, when it was asked if that was simply a passage from the novel "ripped out": It's been a while since I read it, but I recall a passage concerning exploding pigs, and the perils of exploding pigs.

I loved Crypt of the Moaning Diamond--I'll probably read this story sometime, too.

The events were referenced in the novel, but not shown. This short story is new.

-Right, it was confirmed. According to the author:

Hi all:
This is actually a prequel to Crypt that was written for the WOTC website about a year ago! It was scheduled to be published at the same time as Crypt but suffered the sad fate of being eaten by the bits and bytes of the website redesign. The editor and I tried to retrieve it several times, but, alas, the pigs never flew.

Until today.

And it is a complete surprise to me. I was going to put it down in my memoirs as phantom pig story.

So there you go, an early holiday present for you and me: Exploding Pigs!

Sorry all about the long silence on the forum. I've been polishing up City of the Dead for next June and packing up all my books for a move. The two thousand and then some volumes that form my library made it safely from point A to point B. But the movers did call my boxes "daunting." I said "Daunting was finding enough boxes for all this and getting it into the boxes."

Cheers all!

I'm really glad this prequel came out now, 'cause I've had the novel kicking around since July & haven't gotten around to reading it just yet (too busy devouring 4e rulebooks at the moment).

Got a kick out of the idea of a pig-hating wizard, though. If the book's half as amusing, I'm sure I'll enjoy it.
