| #1lowcypherJul 12, 2008 22:12:54 | So, uh what are your plans for your realms campaign? For the past ten years or so my Realms campaign had been hewing to the timeline as presented in the sourcebooks as well as the FR website, but now that it had been advanced to 100 years with the coming of the 4E realms, i'm not so sure what I will do with my campaign. My players are all high level, epic even (20th level up) and call us crazy but we are really attached to them .Any thoughts? ![]() |
| #2merrikcaleJul 12, 2008 22:18:45 | So, uh what are your plans for your realms campaign? same problem. I am probably staying in the current timeline and not advancing as I don't like what they have done, besides they will not be publsihing any further Faerun supplements anyway so.... But I do like the 4e rules. The ideal world would have had a brief timeline so I could just adjust the characters to the 4e rules |
| #3lord_karsusJul 12, 2008 22:19:12 | -No one's forcing you to "toe the line". If you like the direction that the setting is going in, have those characters "make the jump". If you don't- and I'm getting that vibe- then don't have them "make the jump". |
| #4ody_saraph_of_karsusJul 12, 2008 22:21:41 | Just don't make them god cuz we need only 30 and anything more than that will be destroyed :P |
| #5merrikcaleJul 12, 2008 22:21:44 | -No one's forcing you to "toe the line". If you like the direction that the setting is going in, have those characters "make the jump". If you don't- and I'm getting that vibe- then don't have them "make the jump". but you feel left behind |
| #6ody_saraph_of_karsusJul 12, 2008 22:22:43 | but you feel left behind Cuz you ARE.... |
| #7lord_karsusJul 12, 2008 22:25:45 | but you feel left behind -Well, yeah, as Ody said, you kinda are. But, trudge on, if you like the campaign. What's the big deal? |
| #8ody_saraph_of_karsusJul 12, 2008 22:29:59 | -Well, yeah, as Ody said, you kinda are. But, trudge on, if you like the campaign. What's the big deal? Exactly... Hey OP, what Classes are your Characters? |
| #9lowcypherJul 12, 2008 22:31:06 | As an old time DM for our realms campaign, with countless hours invested, it's really a big hassle for me to make the jump ... well not immediately anyways. Maybe, i'm just going to make a 'creeping jump' and see how the new rules mesh up with the old one...and also how to introduce the 'new' realms in such a way that it wouldn't seem to be jarring to our suspension of disbelief. :embarrass Maybe a years time of adjustment would do...have to wait for the FRCG books though. |
| #10merrikcaleJul 12, 2008 22:34:25 | -Well, yeah, as Ody said, you kinda are. But, trudge on, if you like the campaign. What's the big deal? its no big deal, but it bums me out |
| #11lord_karsusJul 12, 2008 22:35:35 | its no big deal, but it bums me out -Sure, it bums me out, too, but I wouldn't let it get in the way of the enjoyment of my own campaign. |
| #12lowcypherJul 12, 2008 22:36:11 | Exactly... Hey OP, what Classes are your Characters? Ody, The characters are the following: 23rd level Druid of Silvanus 10Rog/10Shadowdancer/6fighter human 15Wiz/5Bladesinger/3Archmage Moonelf 12Ranger/10ArcaneArcher/2Sorc Wildelf 13Wizard/14Bard Human 21st Lvl human Paladin The players and the campaign were in existence since 1991...(yeah we're old ) |
| #13lowcypherJul 12, 2008 22:40:49 | its no big deal, but it bums me out Ditto. ![]() But yeah, pity the wizards... I was thinking of playing the realms campaign where the characters slowly discover that their usual powers are diminishing...spells, feats, etc etc...but at the same they began to notice new things too....which will all start happening during the spell plague...:P |
| #14ody_saraph_of_karsusJul 12, 2008 22:44:11 | Ody, I think you can get the Wizard to find somesort of spell that let's the party in stasis for 100 years till a desendant of some one in the party revives them "in need of Great Champions" or something to that effect. If you are using 4E rules well... I'm sorry for the druid... |
| #15lord_karsusJul 12, 2008 22:46:17 | If you are using 4E rules well... I'm sorry for the druid... -There aren't any "conversions" for the Druid? I know people have already created "conversions" for Monks. Merrik showed me. |
| #16ody_saraph_of_karsusJul 12, 2008 22:47:35 | -There aren't any "conversions" for the Druid? I know people have already created "conversions" for Monks. Merrik showed me. Not that I'm aware of... but I'm following 4E as much as you are so.... |
| #17merrikcaleJul 12, 2008 22:47:44 | but the druid will be there in March |
| #18lowcypherJul 12, 2008 22:48:09 | I think you can get the Wizard to find somesort of spell that let's the party in stasis for 100 years till a desendant of some one in the party revives them "in need of Great Champions" or something to that effect. But i'll toy with your idea for a while... ![]() |
| #19ody_saraph_of_karsusJul 12, 2008 22:48:16 | but the druid will be there in March I stand corrected... :P |
| #20merrikcaleJul 12, 2008 22:50:04 | I stand corrected... :P PHB2 in March will have the druid but its likely to be very very different |

| #22ody_saraph_of_karsusJul 12, 2008 22:51:18 | Hehe. That would be a drastic change indeed...if we go along that route!:D ...and the druid player will kill me. :P . I might go that route Myself (even though I'm not converting to 4E but I'm somewhat interested in the lore) |
| #23merrikcaleJul 12, 2008 22:53:32 | I'll just tell the druid character that he can't play till march...:D Just tell him, it will be a lot more shape shifter and a lot less nature priest |
| #24lord_karsusJul 12, 2008 22:53:36 | Not that I'm aware of... but I'm following 4E as much as you are so.... -Gotcha. Well...It can't be that hard to make one up for the time being, can it? |
| #25ody_saraph_of_karsusJul 12, 2008 22:55:45 | Let him be a cleric with a leather and Flavor it as a druid. |
| #26lowcypherJul 12, 2008 22:57:18 | Just tell him, it will be a lot more shape shifter and a lot less nature priest I can do that, Merrik, but I want the change to be more in game (organic?), so as to somehow make the change believable.;) |
| #27merrikcaleJul 12, 2008 22:57:25 | Let him be a cleric with a leather and Flavor it as a druid. kinky |
| #28lowcypherJul 12, 2008 22:58:40 | Let him be a cleric with a leather and Flavor it as a druid. The player will just thump me on the head if i do that ... :P |
| #29lord_karsusJul 12, 2008 23:00:11 | The player will just thump me on the head if i do that ... :P -You're the DM. Hit him back! |
| #30lowcypherJul 12, 2008 23:01:40 | -You're the DM. Hit him back! Lord Karsus, may I show this to the player as proof that the Great Lord Karsus "told me so'? :D |
| #31merrikcaleJul 12, 2008 23:05:47 | -You're the DM. Hit him back! promoting violence now, eh? |
| #32lord_karsusJul 12, 2008 23:06:38 | promoting violence now, eh? -Yes. I have no qualms hitting my players. |
| #33JohnLynchJul 14, 2008 1:01:19 | My players are all high level, epic even (20th level up) and call us crazy but we are really attached to them What are you attached to? The powers or the characters? If its the former I can't really recommend you moving forward to 4e. HOWEVER if its the personality of the characters then you could have them experience the spellplague and have them lose their magical powers like all other magic users. You could also have the gods withdraw from the world for a year or two, which would force everyone in the world to lose their powers from the gods. The reason for this is they're fearful that more of them will be killed and so they fortify their defences until the fear passes. Its not completely canonical, but it certainly works. That way the only character levels you have left are: 12 Ranger Wildelf 10 Rogue/6 Fighter Human You could have your arcane and divine characters then choose new classes (although none could choose clerics or paladins) and start around level 12-16 while you'd convert the martial characters. The in-game reason for the decreased level is they need to relearn magic. Although this doesn't bring you up through the 100 year gap. I'd personally want to roleplay through this time. I don't know what you could do. |
| #34lord_karsusJul 14, 2008 1:13:50 | -If I'm not mistaken, the novel Unclean, or the second book in the series, if that isn't the second novel, takes place DURING the Spellplague, and Wizards are still able to utilize magic- though, I don't know if its the new system of magic or not. So, you can still have them in there, if you want. Either system, probably. -Can anyone confirm which system of magic the book seemed to use? |
| #35Mr_MiscellanyJul 14, 2008 1:35:29 | Hello LowCypher,For the past ten years or so my Realms campaign had been hewing to the timeline as presented in the sourcebooks as well as the FR website, but now that it had been advanced to 100 years with the coming of the 4E realms, i'm not so sure what I will do with my campaign. How very similar our games appear to be! What are my plans? Well, they’re already sort of in motion. To start, I run a 3.5 game for four players, where each player has two characters of epic level. We’ve been playing in the 3E Realms since just after the 3.0 core rulebooks were released and all the players are very attached to their characters. These players have decided to make new 4E characters (one apiece) and one add-on character that the group runs (because 4E encounters assume five characters are being played at the table) so we can play in the 4E Realms. Currently, we’re playing the Keep on the Shadowfell adventure and using the Realms conversion for it on WotC’s website. Now then, all of these new characters are linked in some way to the old ones. Some are the daughters or sons of the older characters (like the half-drow/Aasimar Paladin), while others are linked to retired DM PCs that were run eight years ago when we were short players (Rorick Huntsilver II). We run both FR games concurrently. I’m having fun dropping hints about ‘the future’ to my players as they play in the 4E Realms, because they naturally think backwards to their older 3.5 characters and what they ‘were’ able to achieve. For our 4E Realms game, I’ve already clued the players in on the possible existence of some undying, semi-sentient heavy magic that one of the 3.5 characters in my group had to use a Wish to get rid of, because it had attached itself to him and Shapechanged him into a Black Dragon of terrible power that was slowly taking over his mind. The 4E characters will soon discover this dragon essence may be what a group of cultists below Shadowfell Keep are trying to free from the depths of the Shadowfell. Now the 4E characters don’t know the full story behind where this Heavy Magic based dragon-essence came from, but the players behind those characters do! It was cool to sit at the gaming table and hear the banter of my players as they went back and forth (and out of character) about it. To wit: “Dude! See?!? I told you that messing with that %*#! would cause us problems! So what if it was a hundred years later? I’m still right!” Sorry to veer of course there. I think you get the idea of what my plans are. We’re playing in both eras with both sets of rules and having fun making it all fit together. Best of luck to you, LowCypher! |
| #36rinonalyrna_fathomlinJul 15, 2008 18:29:26 | So, uh what are your plans for your realms campaign? Just do what you want! It's your game after all. You don't have to change anything in your game just because the official setting is changing. |
| #37aardwolfJul 15, 2008 19:26:59 | hey OP, I am thinking it is a great opportunity to use those 100 years, which are sure to be strife filled (DM cackling with glee) to do your own thing before time catches up to you again ![]() |
| #38nymrohdJul 15, 2008 19:37:37 | Well your players are pretty high level so personally I think that making them face the spellplague and not going with the timejump would be a great campaign. I mean taking Undead into account, the spellplague can get really violent in certain areas, so evacuating villages and cities, facing mutated horrors or possibly being among the first people to explore transplanted territories can all be great campaigns. All this while your characters adapt to 4E game rules. Heck you can even let a couple of them develop spellscars (if those end up being cool rules-wise). As for your characters, the bard and the druid are not out yet but there are two very good house ruled classes for those two. I would suggest your Wiz/bard becomes a bard with multiclass levels of wizard. |
| #39mister_mxyztplkJul 15, 2008 20:47:55 | Lord Karsus, may I show this to the player as proof that the Great Lord Karsus "told me so'? :D Lord Karsus works in mysterious ways.;) |
| #40lord_karsusJul 15, 2008 21:01:39 | Lord Karsus, may I show this to the player as proof that the Great Lord Karsus "told me so'? :D -Yes. |
| #41DiffanJul 16, 2008 8:51:37 | LowCypher, My group is in a similiar dilemma. Though we haven't used the characters/campaign in some while, we were doing an Avatar game where we fell through a portal to Faerun. I've been toying with the idea of our characters living out the rest of our days in the Realms, and maybe playing characters of their children's children. But I don't think my players will respond well to that so I came up with something else. Since we came from another world, there were portals around Faerun that could send us back. Through long months of working in/around Waterdeep, we finally had the chance to meet with the Blackstaff and see if he could find a gate/portal to our own dimension. After some time working around his busy schedule, he eventually did find one and as we made the leap toward home, something went wrong. For over a hundred years we were suspended in the nether between worlds, and as we emerged to what we thought would be home, it was a totally changed Faerun. Since magic worked differently, and my friend's deity had changed (Lathander to Amaunator) our characters would be different (add 4e mechanics) and we would take up our quest for home anew. The hard part is finding how to create the same concept with the 4e rules. Some are simple (ie paladin, fighter, cleric, etc..) but some aren't (druid, swordsage...) so I think we're going to wait until other source material becomes available before we take the plunge. Hope some of this helps and I hope you enjoy 4e :D. |
| #42nymrohdJul 16, 2008 9:04:24 | I think the lack of certain basic classes and archetypes right now in the RAW is one of the greater impediments in converting campaigns. In part it is reasonable especially considering that 3-3.5 introduced a truly massive ammount of crunch to the game that would take years to convert. Certainly most of us have some grudges that some popular, some might even say intrinsic, D&D archetypes are not readily available and will not be until PHBII or even later. Personally I think that it comes to how long term the campaign is and how flexible the players and DM are in fixing said issues. I would allow my players to try a reasonable community class or one of the classes from the APHB by Necromancer that will come this Octomber and then convert it into the RAW when that is available but not everyone is comfortable with this level of retraining. |
