Hello,

I just bought me the latest D&D4 players handbook after not having played for two years out of curiosity. What suprised me a little was that basic player races there changed a lot... a lot more than they did when D&D3 replaced AD&D if I remember correctly.

Now I wish to know is how the changes in the D&D core rules reflect in the Forgotten Realms? Are those lizard men are now a default race in the Forgotten Realms, too? Are Eladrin an own race, separate from the moon-, sun-, wood- and wild elves, or does "Eladrin" simply translate into "Sun Elf"; do do elves (including Eladrin) count rule-wise as fey now, or are they still humanoid?

I gotta admit those race changes confuse me a little. I find it good that half-orcs are out, bad that those lizards are in. As for gnomes being out and the new perception of elves I am not sure yet, but I absolutely don't understand the reason for the change...

OK, I got the book and got my answers. All those changes seem a little ... tought to me. However. I have a strong preference for Fighter / Mage characters since that was my favourite character in my old AD&D times. Plus, the most detailed I ever created, with a background story in which all my heartblood was but I never managed to actually find a group for was a (Monte Cook variant D&D 3.0) Ranger / Silver Star. So, my heartbeat went up by a few hundred per minute when I saw I can have both at once now. The only thing that does not seem possible from scratch is the aasimar part, but I can live with that.

The question is: Are swordmages eligible to become to become silver stars? If not I'd choose another base class rather than another paragon path. But the requirement is that the class has either arcane and divine power source and uses implements. Spellswords use "any light blade or heavy blade" officially as implement and their power source is "arcane"...

However the paragon path description encompasses wizard, warlock, bard(?) and sorcerer(?) but not cleric or in this case swordmages...

Arcane or Divine power source? Check.
Use Implements? Check?

Swordmage/Silverstar good to go, Cap'n.
