Out of curiosity, is anyone having their campaigns move through this timeframe or have characters from 3.5 make the transition into 4.0 (i.e. elves, dwarves, long-lived races)? If so, how have your players reacted to the changes? How have your wizard player(s) reacted to the change in magic system?

I was just curious as to the reactions of the players who have maintained a character from 3.5.

P.S. Apologies I should have placed this under Running the Realms.

Not me, 4th edition is not going to infect my group. We stay in 3rd edition until we finish our campaign and we'll probably convert to Pathfinder after that.

My players will have to suffer the Spell-plauge. Or at least I'm having a few sessions (maybe 1 month/ 4 sessions) of exploding magic users and dying gods (all of my players were clerics/melee) so have upgraded to the cool martial/divine powers sources.

Planning on rocking through the spell-plauge for a few sessions but ending with the players retreating through a collapsing gate to an Eladrin fey-wild (I changed the planes a little bit) city before returning 100 years later after they manage to re-open the gate and appear in the new FR where they will have to discover the changes that have been made and the fact that all of their long term friends and allies have died. Although one of them now has 2 half-elven children

I'll just be starting up with the new current campaign year and going from there. My new players have read very few of the novels and have played in the FR from time to time over the years so that they'll know enough of what was to appreciate some of the changes that have occured in the Realms.

Of course they are the lucky ones, they haven't spent a small fortune over the long years on all things FR like myself.

I've thought about it and might run some, but I'd like a little more info and what's happened during that time and after... so I'll be waiting for my books.

Now that I have a very good idea about the 4e setting, I may just create a 3.75 setting set around 1390 DR - just after the worst of the Spellplague is over.

This will allow me to use the new rules, and some of the new setting material, but still have access to all the NPCs and locations of 3e. I think, for me, this would be the best way to go.

Besides, the Spellplague sounds like an incredibly adventursom time to play-through - why should we pass-up an opprotunity like that? You could even have 'pockets' where 3e magic still works, but it is "flickering, and going out".

I plan on having all backward time travel attempts end in the spellplague, let them play in the Storm of Blue Fire for awhile, then shunt them back to the present. And the good thing is since the spellplague affected the whole cosmology the can't sneak thru other planes.
A side quest will be ending up on Abeir, in Unther or Chessenta probably, I just need some Primordials and Dragonlords to spice it up.

-WotC is, so they say, purposely not going to explain any details of the Spellplague years. So, whatever any individual DM wants to do is "official", in their games.
