So I just read The Orc King by RA Salvatore, his newest book about Drizzt, and I'll admit I'm confused. I havn't read any of the new FR books over the past year or so and I apparently missed some huge cataclysmic event. Can anyone tell me what books that happened in? Thanks a lot...

You'll probably want to skim through Grand History of the Realms, some of the current novel, lines and the website. 4E FR isn't here yet or I'd skim through it but excessively short form.

There are a lot of events that I'm utterly skipping specifically a soap opera starring Tyr, Sune, Tymora and killing Helm. Somehow (Shar's help is hinted at) in 1385, Cyric assassinates Mystra within the boundaries of Dweomerheart. Dweomerheart explodes, whatever contingencies Mystra may have fail and the Spellplague occurs. This means that

1) The Weave completely unravels, magic goes screwy across Toril, driving insane or destroying outright many mages while conveniently bypassing specific author-preferred (Halruaa goes boom, Myth Drannor gets off light) heavy concentrations. Mages take several years learning how to work without a divine filter.

2) The destruction of Mystra and Dweomerheart screws over the planes. Any and all Divine Realms not anchored by a Greater God are destroyed. Lower ranking powers will in many cases continue on as servants of Greater Powers.

3) Either related or not, Shar's control of the Shadow Weave disintegrates.

Possibly not #3, as the Shadow Weave was hinted at being the new Shadow Source of Power, or however their terming those things. No idea if Shar has anything to do with it though.

-The prologue and the epilogue both take place about 100 years in the future, in relation to the current date. The rest of the book takes place a few years in the past, in relation to the current date.

-That should help a little, I think. ;)
