Jul 06, 2010 13:25:13 _The Grand History of the Realms_ could have been a book with a lot more potential. In itself, it does what it promises to do: provide a timeline.

But... I wanted more

One of the things missing is a table of contents, no matter how small, to at least find back the different Era's. Perhaps another thing missing is a list of major players (or at least well known players :-)).

But, perhaps most of all, there's no list of FR products versus the timeline. Just, per year, the number and the name of an FR product...

No such luck. I've searching the Internet, as well as these forums. Perhaps I've overlooked such a list, and if so, could anyone redirect me to it? Thanks in advance!

Jul 08, 2010 21:08:33 The source notes were deliberately removed from Brian James's original document: cut for space, and through Wizards' long-standing policy against scary academic-looking apparatus referencing out-of-print books.

Jul 11, 2010 18:21:25 Well, true as that (perhaps) might be, perhaps it is a. a bit dumb and b. not very considerate knowing that the primary customers of this product just might be the kind of idiots, euh, completists :-) buying new stuff anyway! :-)

It's rather disappointing, to be honest...

No alternative sources known?

...2) You might have been tempted to buy the old products instead of the new ones. WotC and Slavicsek wouldn't have like that....

Funny thing about that, at a shop my friend and I were going to think about frequenting (and ended up not going to after a visit), we asked the store owner if you could still get 3.5 books and we were told that not only were they out of print, that I would be unable to find them "even if you look on Ebay".
This guy then tried to tell us we were only allowed to run 4th ed games, and wanted to charge us $1 per hour per person to play D&D in his store (and yes, this was an actual gaming store).

Needless to say, we went with the closer, older, more friendly, old school comic/games store to play our games in.

I just thought its funny he was trying to tell us we wouldnt be able to ever find the books and "would have to" convert to 4th ed

Appearently, it was taken 'of the shelf' by TSR / WOTC / Hasbro (I know I shouldn't group those names, I know, it's just how they're associated in the dumb catacombs of my mind) in favour of the printed product.

Unfortunately, I have to say, there are some things that speak in favour of the PDF file... It's colour coded, but best of all, it DOES contain product references. As the regular book is clearly a descendant I just fail to understand why WOTC removed the references. Sad... Leaves me little choice but to print out the PDF on glossy paper and have it bound. I think Brian R. James' work would have deserved a little more attention, to be honest.

Anyway, if you're looking for the original PDF file, try a google for " brian james grand history of the realms pdf " or something similar, the original file is bound to show up somewhere.

In addition, a bit of searching for " realms timeline " also resulted in some other hits that came in handy. I noticed some overlapping material, some conflicting material, and some interesting material :-) Have fun! :-)
