| #1otakuabelmontMar 29, 2009 3:44:43 | My players want to be changelings and war-forged in Faerun. I don't have a problem with it, I just want some suggestions as to where they are gonna fit in from a wiser source than I. The war-forged are gonna be "reproducing" by building more bodies (and some kinda merging of two souls to split into three or something along those lines) so they won't be all first generation (though they will still be as rare as in Eberron). Changelings will have their own patron deities (still working on who) who are worshiped equally by non-changelings. Other than that, I'm up for anything. Don't want changelings to have their own civilization or anything, but I wanna give them a Faerun flavor. Same with war-forged. |
| #2DiffanMar 29, 2009 4:45:39 | Are we talking about 3.5 edition here or 4e? Reguardless of edtition, I allow Warforged to be from Lantan and other far-away places and are rare along the Sword Coast for example. As for changlings, I don't see them being a problem in major cities like Baldur's Gate or Waterdeep or even a place like Suzail in Cormyr. |
| #3borrisMar 29, 2009 5:33:00 | Waterdeep already has a thief guild / secret society where humans and doppelganger mingle. It wouldn't be farfetched to think of changelings to come from such unions. In this way though, they would be like half-elves or half-orcs, only rarer. I don't think that would warrant a patron deity. You could conceive a patron deity for doppelgangers, though, which would be likely worshipped by changelings, too, and by a handful of (deceitful) humans as well. As for warforged, the most common origin people give is contructs either made by the gnome and human inventors of Lantan, as an improved version of the sentient Gonsdmen, or made long ago by the old empire of Imaskar (somewhat reputed for its constructs) and only recently rediscovered in ancient ruins and then reactivated. |
| #4lord_karsusMar 29, 2009 11:35:53 | -This belongs in the Realmslore section. It'll be moved. |
| #5lord_karsusMar 29, 2009 11:36:23 | -Ideas can be found in THIS thread and in THISthread. |
| #6addle-cove-anarchistMar 30, 2009 14:25:39 | doppelgangers are descendants of the batrachi, that's all I know |
| #7LordMorbienMar 30, 2009 17:54:38 | As for warforged, the most common origin people give is contructs either made by the gnome and human inventors of Lantan, as an improved version of the sentient Gonsdmen, or made long ago by the old empire of Imaskar (somewhat reputed for its constructs) and only recently rediscovered in ancient ruins and then reactivated. I like the idea of warforged coming from a forgotten Imaskari creation forge, perhaps reactivated by the magical backlash that kicked off the spellplague (if using 4e). I'd expect a Lantan version to have more clockwork and fewer organic componants than the core version of the warforged. |
| #8BadCatManMar 30, 2009 20:55:54 | Warforged come up every month, so I won't mention them again. Just see the threads LK linked to. Doppelgangers are often seen down the Sword Coast: the secret society Borris mentioned; the doppelganger assassins that Salvatore used in one of his books; the other assassins that attacked Lord Piergeiron and his wife during the Double Diamond Triangle Saga. (We might suppose these are all working for the same group.) Heck, in the village of Roaringshore, the Broken Goblet tavern is staffed by doppelgangers in the form of buxom wenches (according to Volo, anyway). There's also the Druuth cabals, formed of mind flayers and doppelgangers, found in the Underdark. And doppelgangers can be found scattered across the Realms. So it isn't hard to imagine Changelings showing up as the result of human-doppelganger unions in these areas, perhaps working as members of the Waterdeep group, or a Druuth cabal, or just ordinary folk. Leira, goddess of lies and deception, would be perfect for Changelings and Doppelgangers to worship. She's listed as dead, but many think she faked it. |
| #9lord_karsusMar 30, 2009 20:57:38 | the doppelganger assassins that Salvatore used in one of his books -Was there was some sort of Doppelganger involvement with the Knights of the Shield, or am I misremembering something stemming from the Salvatore books? |
| #10BadCatManMar 30, 2009 22:59:08 | There's no mention of doppelgangers in relation to the Knights in the notes I've taken on the organisation. So I don't think so, not unless it happened in a novel (I think only Elfsong used the Knights Of The Shield). They'd probably make a good team though. Gargauth's method of spawning tieflings is much like how I'd expect a doppelganger to spawn Changelings. Gargauth would make a good deity for an evil changeling as well. Oh, a group of mindflayers and changelings (probably a Druuth cabal) were responsible for the death of Durlag, of Durlag's Tower fame. (It would be really nice if sourcebook writers could spell 'doppelganger' correctly. :rolleyes ![]() |
| #11otakuabelmontMar 31, 2009 2:29:53 | First off, sorry I put in the wrong section. Second, I like the Imaskiri idea immensely, but wouldn't that tie them in to the Shades (I don't tend to use the shades as a group as they don't tend to fit very well into my campaigns, which are a little more on the mixed-group side of things than the "City of Drow" kind if ya know what I mean) and the Halruuans? (I'm still an adept in Faerun lore, might be thinking of somebody else) Also, the more I thought about it, the more it seemed to make sense that changelings would exist in Faerun (seems better to me in fact than in Eberron considering the more developed/numerous organizations). I just can't think of a way to make them Faerunian changelings instead of just changelings in Faerun. BTW, looked for batrachi, couldn't find out what that is. Sorry! One of my players suggested the idea of a Faerunian deity or some great extra-planar power's (perhaps deities horribly fused together or something by some bizarre quirk of magic, or a soul-sucking creature being blasted into nothingness) death bringing souls (or the essence/starting materials/"ghosts" of souls) into underground ore or the like. Sounded very interesting, and it kind of suits the idea of making them belong in Faerun instead of just being Eberron races made available. Finally, my group is currently swinging between 3.5 (because of all of us having the starting three manuals, and me having about half the 3.5 supplements) and 4.0 (as 2 of them bought the basic three manuals, one illegally downloaded it (I do not approve! His laptop stays away from my table), and one has perpetually been checking out the 4.0 player's handbook from our local library). For the most part, we do 3.5 with every 3rd or 4th session being a 4.0 one with 3.5 Faerun lore. They are starting to bring 4.0 lore into it as our hacker-friend prints out the differences and changes and brings them to each session (half of them are resisting the changes because of the death of Eilistraee and the end of the Harpers ruining our current campaign immensely). |
| #12borrisMar 31, 2009 5:18:47 | Shades are survivors from the ancient empire of Netherese, who hid on th eplane of Shadow for a few centuries after their empire fell. Netherese had nothing to do with ancient Imaskar, being almost at the other end of the world. Imaskar was one of the very first human empires, located where one can now find Thay, Unther, and Mulhorand (in 4e, make that Thay, Tymanther, and High Imaskar. Yes, they're back.) Halruaans were also descendants of Netherese survivors, but in a colony far to the south (and far enough from Imaskar not to be in direct contact with them). But Halruaa is a devastated wasteland now, and those few Halruaans who were lucky enough to be away when the Spellplague exploded would have little reason to seek refuge in Imaskar. Batrachi were an ancient race of amphibian-like humanoids. They are listed as one of the Creator Races of Faerûn, along with humans, sarrukh (serpent folk), an avian race which name I forget, and perhaps a fey race. The Batrachi are said to be the far-off ancestors of doppelgangers, sivs, and bullywugs (and perhaps other races). I don't think the "souls trapped underground" theory would work very well. It's well established, in the Forgotten Realms, that when someone dies, his soul travels to his deities plane, where it becomes a petitionner and eventually merges with the plane or its deity. Though your idea may make an interesting campaign, with a world-shaking disturbance the PCs must help fix. Regarding a deity for changelings and doppelgangers, though, there are more than enough deities in FR for you not to find any. As they are even more versatile than humans, though, I'd see changelings as having more difference between their individual worship than any other race, favoring gods of change or deception. If you want a single god for a secret group of doppelgangers, you could go for Leira, the (presumably) dead goddess of lies and deception. Or perhaps Ghanadaur, he who lurks in darkness, the very ancient evil god of oozes and outcasts. Finally, play with whatever edition you like best, but I'd be wary of mixing 3.5 and 4 together. And if you're playing in the 3.5 era (around 1380 in the Realms), even you use the 4e rules, I wouldn't implement the setting changes until you start a new campaign. The Harpers and Eilistraee shouldn't stop existing in the middle of a campaign for no good reason. It's perfectly fine to play in 1370 with 4e rules, or 1480 with 3.5 rules, though. There's no mandatory relationship between the timeline and the rule version. |
| #13lord_karsusMar 31, 2009 9:50:09 | -The Creator Races: Sarrukh, Batrachi, Aeraee (Sp?), the Fey Creator Race, and Humans. |
| #14redglacierMar 31, 2009 23:30:54 | My homebrew goes as follows: Some god (Finder, god of Transmutation Magic, Shapeshifting, Transformation, and Change in my Realms; but whoever you like in yours) finds a slumbering Batrachi deity & subsumes it. He gives the 3e doppelganger race the "gift" of humanity, which changes it into the 4e doppelganger race(3e changelings.) |
| #15markustay_dupApr 02, 2009 15:35:51 | The group everyone is talking about that would be perfect for Changelings is The Unseen. I'd give them a Batrachi god - probably use an early aspect of Ramenos. As for Warforged, thats been beaten to death; any automaton/Golem/Effigy that has been 'Awakened' by any means qualifies. Hell, there's even one case of a self-aware Illusion that may qualify (Ghost-Forged?). |
| #16addle-cove-anarchistApr 02, 2009 16:50:00 | I'd use Leira, maybe even the changelings as the original inhabitants of Nimbral Or Frazurblu, Finder is a good idea, Ramenos is kinda bestial for their subtleness |
| #17quale1Apr 05, 2009 15:38:18 | My homebrew goes as follows: Some god (Finder, god of Transmutation Magic, Shapeshifting, Transformation, and Change in my Realms; that's an interesting idea in one of the old campaigns, Kelemvor never became a god of death, so Finder took the position with the cycles of life and death, he was like a bone/doomsinger or the Boney King of Nowhere |
| #18lord_karsusApr 05, 2009 15:46:40 | in one of the old campaigns, Kelemvor never became a god of death, so Finder took the position with the cycles of life and death, he was like a bone/doomsinger or the Boney King of Nowhere -I recently made up an NPC with the Dirgesinger PrC. It's pretty cool, I think. |
| #19markustay63Apr 06, 2009 11:44:50 | ...he was like... the Boney King of Nowhere ![]() Jack Skellington, I presume? :D |
| #20quale1Apr 07, 2009 15:27:41 | lol, a little inspired yes, also from a song and an old tv show, I like to use the names for gods in Eberron's Dark Six style |
| #21gothmog_of_angbandApr 12, 2009 10:24:29 | I still can't get used to the idea of warforged in the Realms. They seem so... alien there. |
| #22markustay63Apr 12, 2009 23:12:26 | These are the new, Uber-kewl Realms, with five times the BOOM!, and none of the confining logic. It slices and dices and makes julienne fries... now with Retsin! :D So go-go Gadget Rollerscates and start throwing around those Kameah-Meah blasts! Catgirls and 7' swords welcome..... |
| #23sfdragonApr 13, 2009 1:39:38 | what about the dragonballs.... |
